1. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break!

2. You may want to check your grades as they are posted on Sycamore. We only have three weeks of the semester left and that includes finals! I will enter some grades today, but after that, If something is amiss, email me at [email protected]

3. Unfortunately, I am experiencing a “bump in the road.”I had surgery for a detached retina on November 18.

This is serious! I could be blind without successful surgery.

I had laser surgery to repair it. It hurt LIKE CRAZY! I know because I was awake through the whole surgery.

I didn’t take a picture of my eye after surgery, but it looked much like this.

Part of the treatment was to pump my eye full of gas. Now, in order to hold my repaired retina on the back wall of my eye while it heals, I have to lie face down for 40 minutes out of every hour. That’s two-thirds of the time!Since the eye cannot be filled 100% with gas, there is an air bubble in my eye. Lying face down, makes the bubble float and then it holds the torn retina in place while it heals.

I watch TV using two mirrors. Ingenious, right?

I am resting my head on the table so I can get some work done under the table!

I will be gone this week (at a minimum). I have a doctor’s appointment on Wednesday, and then I will find out when I can return to the classroom.

Meanwhile, it’s face-down for me 40 minutes out of EVERY HOUR!

Sigh.

This too shall pass.

Please pray for me because right now, my vision is still very blurry. I would prefer not to be blind in one eye.

So . . .please be cooperative for the sub, and get your work done!

This week:

Memorization is due this week. You may take your copy of the poem (with your name and hour on it) to the teacher and she will listen to it while others are working on presentations. THURSDAY is the LAST DAY. If you say it on Friday, you will suffer a 50% penalty.

Monday: Get started with theme preparation.

Tuesday: Write in class journals. Work in computer lab

Wednesday: Hand in vocabulary books; take vocabulary test; work on presentations

Thursday: Class journal; Work on presentations

Friday: Practice presentations. You must send Mrs. W. your finished power points by Sunday at 7 PM OR give me a flash drive Friday before you leave school. The power points must be completely finished. You do NOT have the option of giving me a revised version Monday morning.

Sophomores (hrs. 1 & 6) Monday, December 1, 2014

Find your partner for the themes presentations. NO MORE than ONE group of three people per class. You do have the option of doing this by yourself without a partner, if you choose.

Make sure that you are entirely clear about what to do and what is expected. Ignorance on your part serves as an explanation, not an excuse.

Absolutely NO late assignment passes may be used on this presentation OR on the final themes #1-8 which are due on Tuesday, December 9.

Themes #1-8 are due on December 9 at the beginning of class.

Themes #1-4 should be retyped and corrected (I hope in a minor way) and handed in with #5-8. Of course you have learned something from the feedback on #1-4.

If you want me to reevaluate #1-4, you MUST also hand in the first edition with the teacher’s marks. If you do not, the first grade will stand. Also be aware that in order to earn a change of grade, you must DRAMATICALLY change and IMPROVE the newer version.

You can find original illustrations at http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/76Write this URL on your rubric if you want it later. If you download the EPUB version of HF, you can advance to a table of contents and later to an index of illustrations with live links.

You may also use illustrations from around the Internet.ALWAYS give credit, so the last slide of your presentation should be a References page.

Remember that you also need to have a modern example.

FAQs

1. Do I need a certain number of slides for my PowerPoint? You can use as many slides as you want. The first slide should serve as a title page, and your last slide is like a References page.

2. Does the teacher want specific topics for each slide? The topics on each page are up to you. I do not decide that.

3. Does it all have to be in a certain order? Concerning the order--first slide will serve as a title, the last slide as a References page. What happens in between is up to you.

4. Do we have to cite all references in the references page as well as in the notes? You only need to put your references on the last slide--not in the notes. I'm sorry that I neglected to delete that from the rubric.

5. During our presentation, do we each have to speak 3 min. Or 4 min.? I'm changing the time that each person needs to speak to 3 minutes. So if you work with another person, the total time for the presentation will be a minimum of 6 min. and a maximum of 8 minutes.

6. Can one person speak for 3 min. and the the other person speak for 3 min. or do we have to mix it? You can either talk for 3 minutes and then have your partner speak for 3 minutes OR you can mix it up--just do your best to keep the speaking even. It's true that if you mix it up and just talk back and forth, it will be difficult to keep track of the time, but, I should be able to sense if it is fairly even or not.

7. Can each partner both talk about the same theme, or do we each need to talk about two different themes separately? The presentation is supposed to answer the question, “ What was Twain’s message about (theme)?” Both presenters should stay focused on the topic BUT it is possible to briefly talk about another theme.

8. Of course, if you have a combination theme, like money and honor, you will talk about them both
