ABOUT GATEWAY JAPAN

Founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, Gateway Japan is an upcoming Scan-dinavian design company with the mission of bringing great unique design to the market. A cultural and spiritual gateway between Scandinavia and Ja-pan has existed for decades and Scandinavian and Japanese design shares traits of the same philosophy - emphasizing the minimalism and functional-ity of high profile quality products.

The natural gateway between Denmark and Japan lead to a unique partner-ship between Gateway Japan and one of the greatest and versatile postwar designers in Japan: Mr. Sori Yanagi.

After World War II Mr. Sori Yanagi introduced Japan to a new industrial design philosophy of perfect synthesis of Japanese sensitivity and Western design. And later Mr. Yanagi has been honored for his distinguished design from MoMa in New York to Louvre in Paris.

With the highest respect for the brand and the design history of Sori Yanagi Gateway Japan will represent the great designer within five design areas:

SORI YANAGI

With its simplicity and artistry, Sori Yanagi’s design is unmistakably Japa-nese. And yet it becomes a natural part of kitchens and homes around the globe. His language of form is universal, lively and legendary. Just like him.

Mr Yanagi is fascinated by the potential for beauty in everyday tools and furniture all over the home. Thus his design philosophy is about “Functional Beauty”.

Still productive at an age when most have long retired, he is one of the most inspiring and respected designers in the world. As a influence in nurturing and modernising the Japanese design tradition, Sori Yanagi’s canon spans impressive widths. From furniture, porcelain and kitchen utensils to heavy bridge construction, cars and the Olympic flame, that he has designed twice.

The water kettle is just one of Sori Yanagi’s most famous designs. Also in-cluded are the Butterfly chair from 1954, as well as his porcelain and sil-verware series. His designs can be found today in permanent exhibitions around the world – from MoMA in New York to the Louvre in Paris.

We bow respectfully . . . in the Japanese way.

WATER KETTLE

With his water kettle, Sori Yanagi has created a de-sign that makes it easy and effective to boil water and creates a soothing atmosphere. How? Watching the water boil is a little ceremony in itself.

POTS AND PANS

Japanese gastronomy is about serving minimal-ist, aesthetically-pleasing delicacies, created from the fi nest raw ingredients. A parallel can be drawn to the pleasing pots and pans series from Sori Yanagi. Robust materials and construction are the melting pot for the creation of the most exquisite delicacies, at home or in a restaurant.

KITCHEN TOOLS

Some use the tongs for picking up asparagus, others for tending the BBQ grill; Japanese chefs use tongs for everything. We say “Japanese De-sign – Universal Use”.

CUTLERY

In 1974 and 1982 Mr. Sori Yanagi designed the cutlery series that remains world famous today. His two designs share the same high quality Jap-anese handmade production; one in pure stain-less steel, the other combining steel with natural dark wood.

The pure steel design won the highly-coveted distinctive Good Design Award in Japan in 1974, followed by the Long Life Design Award in 2001 for exceptional design and functionality.

And among their many fans, you will fi nd some of the greatest Michelin star chefs in world.

PORCELAIN

For thousands of years, the Japanese have made the little tea ceremony the pivotal point around which people can enjoy a quiet moment in their day.

Fine porcelain is the natural receptacle for the perfect cup of tea. Every type of tea requires its specifi c china and cup design.

Sori Yanagi has designed three different porce-lain ranges to meet a range of different needs, each range with a unique design history.

The dazzling white Bone China series is pro-duced at the world’s most prestigious traditional porcelain factory, Nikko in Kanazawa, Japan. The Bone China series’ clean, soft lines form a com-mon thread for the teapot, milk jug and the rest of the service and provides a fi rst-class tea drink-ing experience.
