A SUCCESSFUL, SIGNIFICANT AND SUSTAINABLE SERVICE CLUB!!

expressed an interest in a cohesive relationship with our Soroptimist Camarillo club.

We look forward to working together with these college women to better serve the

Soroptimist cause!

We are moving forward with our Foster Care Program and had a wonderful BBQ to-

gether, met the wonderful staff and foster girls and were presented with a huge thank

held at Lynn‘s office at Big Brother/Big Sister 8/18/11. Save up your supplies to

MIKI’S HOUSE BAR BQ - JULY 14, 2011

To all our Soroptimist members that could not attend:

We missed you but had a very heartfelt, warm, welcoming BBQ with all the young beautiful teen girls and the many staff members. Miki's House presented us with a wonderful thank you banner that we can display proudly at

our events.

I just had to come home and share with you the wonderful evening we had. Chris Hinds did a fantastic job organizing the BBQ, she cooked up fabulous chicken but I think Barbara Baham's ribs were better!! (Sorry Chris). Wow, does Barb B know how to cook ribs!! I hope we were able to leave "some" left overs behind because we all ate & ate and visited and it was great getting to know each other!! I learned "stuff" about our own members that I had no idea...and I am not tellin...! Miki has done a fantastic job with the home and it is warm and welcoming. I think this is going to be a wonderful friendship and a service project that we can all be proud of and all benefit individ-ually from. Thank you Chris, Great Job!! Oh, lets be sure to have Monika bring the fruit salad "always" as it was fabu-lous! Thank you Chris, Great Job!! Everyone participated - Thank you again - Good job Ladies! IT WAS Fun.

Proud President Barbara SI Camarillo Rocks!!! P.S. See the comments from the evening in the boxes above.

From Lynne West: I want to echo President Barbara's thoughts on last night's event. Mikki was totally overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from our group and our desire to help "her" girls. Mikki has worked very hard at creating a homey environment for the girls, and although some of them didn't say a lot she told me they were overwhelmed by our generosity and kind-ness. We left them with a lot to think about and Mikki will get back to us with which of our ideas they want to try first.

From Betty Gatlin: Hi all: Yes, indeed it was a very special even-ing. The participation from our members was great. The food was excellent. Barbara B. and Chris - we need to nominate you both as official "club bar-b-quers". Not sure how anyone could have left last night without a "warm & fuzzy" feel-ing. If we can make a difference in just a por-tion of the girls who's lives we will touch, our involvement will be a success. The introduc-tions around the room was very special. We need to do that more often.

From DJ Carter: All It was wonderful seeing all of you last nite. I enjoyed the bbq and am looking forward to volunteering more with the home.

From Chris Hinds: Thank you President Barbara! Also thank you to all that was there to share this great evening! Thank you Miki & Staff!

Next Packing Party: Aug 18, 2011 @ 5:30 p.m. Location: Big Brothers Big Sisters Office 445 Rose wood Ave, Suite Q,, Camarillo Theme: RX Cabinet—Personal Hygiene Things you would have in a medicine cabinet, but bring what you think would be important, such as protein bars, drink mix for water, and any fun ideas. Keep the books and magazines coming! Books with game puzzles are good! Open Letter From SGT Krystal Palace-McClintock | U.S. Marines | Afghanistan

Arrived: May 20, 2011 - Schedule To Leave: Dec. 19, 2011

We are currently living in air conditioned cans that break occasionally, but by the time we get off work we are so worn out, we sleep through anything. We have standard U.S. plugs. We have a laundry service, but most of us prefer the self-serve to keep track of our own items. We have a microwave, a coffee maker, and a refrigerator for water. We would like various types of coffee and tea (especially chai teas). Drink mixes for the already boring water. As far foods, we would appreciate jerky, tuna, microwavable (like soups, macaroni, chef boyardee), trail mix, chips, candy, nuts, popcorn, slim jims, granola bars, etc. We have been going through Sunscreen and boot powder very fast. My Marines have to re-apply eve-ry couple of hours because they are sweating so much. We're in desperate need of more hand sanitizer. Baby wipes and face wipes. Black, green, or tan bandanas for the dusty winds. Boot insoles. Tissues. Eye drops or rinse. Nasal saline. Black pens. Pencils. Notebooks or stationary for letter writing. Some personal fan misters for my guys that stay outside all day would be awesome. We're at 108 degrees and are expecting to go up to at least 130 degrees in a month or so. A glorious summer vacation. I'm the only female in this group, but I don't need anything special.

We are no longer in a need of handheld fans. We re-ceived a large amount and everyone that wanted one has one. We still go through the baby wipes and foot powder at a high rate. hygiene items are always in de-mand. Black pens. Erasers. snack foods like jerky, tuna packets, nuts, candy, etc. are appreciated.

Next Service Meeting:

Wednesday September 21, 2011 7:30 a.m.

Susie—1359 Sweetwater Ave. Camarillo

We have some new ideas to discuss & bring

any you have. Our clubs‘ service focus for this

year is our mailing to deployed military women in the Middle East

and the Foster Group home in Camarillo. Other service projects we

may be involved with will be in a support capacity or teaming up

with other clubs or organizations. Some projects take quite a long

time in preparation so any ideas are welcome. We may find some-

thing that will be perfect in the future for us to do.

Miki House Committee Meeting We had held the committee meeting for Miki House, on July 28, at

Yolanda‘s. We will be presenting at the business meeting a calen-

dar for our year, for members to be able to sign up to participate

with the girls with your ideas that they might enjoy.

Also Barbara Hatch presented an idea, of building a patio cover for

Miki House. Which we and Miki, thought it was a fabulous idea.

More on this at the business meeting on Tuesday, August 9th.

Sharon Jones - President of SI Oxnard | 19th International Convention

Montréal, Canada

It was truly a rewarding and educational experience attending the 19th International

Convention in Montreal July 10-14 (see enclosed article). Traveling alone forced me

to network and meet so many ladies from 61 countries. There were just over 1200

Soroptimist who attended.

The Canadian speakers were exceptional women who are leaders. Each day brought

inspiration about Soroptimist world-wide and the significant work we do to help wom-

en and girls live a better life. I returned home with wonderful memories, renewed

enthusiasm for our work and the joy of knowing that as a Soroptimist, we can travel

the world and never be far from friends.

Our new long term SI concept was developed in 2008 as part of Soroptimist Interna-

tional’s strategic planning process and is a project that will be owned and operated by SI.

At the Convention, it was formally announced that Soroptimists worldwide have overwhelmingly chosen to join

together to use our tools of AWARENESS, ADVOCACY, and ACTION to empower women and girls through

the long term topic of Education and Leadership.

Our new focus, Educate to Lead, is an international collaboration of Soroptimist members in all federations

working to raise the status and improve the lives of women and girls. I thought I would close with a few words

shared by our new SI President, Alice Wells at the Convention Closing... Imagine the possibilities. Imagine

what our federation, our region, our club can do. Don’t be afraid to be innovative. Now is the time to look to

the future.

Article From Sharon Jones:

Long Term Theme and December 10th Appeal

Long Term: Soroptimist International is shifting into a new project that is designed and implemented by Soroptimists and will not be time-bound. Soroptimists worldwide have overwhelmingly chosen to join together to use our tools of AWARENESS, ADVOCACY, and ACTION to empower women

and girls through the long term topic of Education and Leadership.

Our new focus, Educate to Lead, is an international collaboration of Soroptimist members in all federations working to raise the status and improve the lives of women and girls. Together, we will work towards our chosen common goal to improve the status of women and girls through education and leadership.

Together, we will undertake activities that ensure a meaningful, sustainable, and powerful global impact.

Every single Soroptimist club around the world is already involved in multiple projects – at local, regional/union and federation level. This new long term project will not change those activities - we know that it is important for each club to forge its own identity through a project undertaken for perhaps several

years. In our new long term project you will be invited to focus on the elements of education and leadership and apply them to our own club projects in our

chosen program area. The collective impact of worldwide Soroptimist support for education and leadership will make our organization more visible in the world, and help us

achieve our mission of creating opportunities to transform the lives of the women and girls we serve.

Our new Long Term Project (longer than 4 years) concept was developed in 2008 as part of Soroptimist International‘s strategic planning process and is a project that will be owned and operated by SI. Our new long term theme of Education and Leadership – Educate to Lead is replacing the Quadrennial Project

and will be the ―centerpiece‖ of how Soroptimist works to achieve its mission to inspire action to transform the lives of women and girls through a global

network of clubs and international partnerships. It will be this international project that brings Soroptimist clubs and members from around the world togeth-er to work toward a common goal. Soroptimist clubs will continue to work on club, region/union or federation projects that transform the lives of women

and girls.

SI is poised to transform women‘s lives with Educate To Lead which will be implemented in almost 3000 Soroptimist clubs in 123 countries. SI looks for-

ward to launching Educate To Lead - designed, managed and operated by Soroptimists and Soroptimist staff that will change the lives of women and girls

and will:

Appeal to existing and future members Have clearly stated objectives and measurable outcomes

Be evaluated regularly and updated and revised as needed

Be appealing to outside funders and the media Provide potential for partnerships at all levels

Reflect the mission and purpose of Soroptimist and contribute positively to the Soroptimist brand

It will be more important that ever that each club completes the Programme Focus reports.

December 10th Appeal: Traditionally, there has been a December 10th Appeal chosen by the President. 2011-2013 President Alice Wells has chosen to

support ―Birthing in the Pacific‖. This is a long term project that is owned and designed by SISWP. All clubs can participate at both a local and international level. This project works towards a specific issue with data to demonstrate measurable change.

Papua New Guinea has the worst maternal mortality rates in Asia and many of these deaths could be prevented. Often the mothers die within 24-48 hours

after delivery due to hemorrhage and/or infection; 48 women die every hour. The number one killer for children under 5 years of age is lack of neonatal care due to lack of training and practical advice. There is an expectation that mother and child will die from child birth. Together through increasing access to

education we can save lives.

SI President Alice Wells feels that the main contribution that clubs can make to this project, under the December 10th President‘s Appeal, is to adopt a mid-wife and supply her equipment – a total of $350 AUS.

Spread sour cream over top of cornbread batter. Sprinkle the cheese over the top.

Bake 30 Minutes Check doneness with toothpick in center. Should come out clean. Let sit for 10 minutes before cutting

* May substitute a second can of cream-style corn for

the green chilies.

To all members of SI Camarillo:

As most of you know I have been unable to attend the meetings on Tuesdays. My military job has been a bit hectic lately; but it has all paid off. I found out last week that I was selected to the next pay grade of Chief Petty Officer. This transition to Chief is an honor in the Navy. In my job field, I had 4 friends retire just last year due to not attaining the rank of Chief.

With great honor comes great responsibility. It is recommended that we participate in Chief Transition thru the next few months, this requires lots of physical activity, (I LOVE IT), lots of study-ing of heritage, history and tradition. Once I complete the transition and extensive training, I will the have a ceremony and be officially pinned to Chief on September 16th. (Please mark the date). If I do not respond to emails or phone calls during this time period, please know that it is not because I do not want to. I will be busy from 0500 to 7:00 pm; at least, every night..

I will keep you posted as I can and will formally invite all of you to my ceremony in September.

Sincerely, DJ Carter

Getting to know you – Featuring Janice Perkins guest columnist Anne Howington

Altoona, PA was the launching pad for one of our newest members. I met with Janice the other day after the Business Meeting. As she was telling me about the first phase of her life I found myself getting homesick for an area I never lived in. She was the second of five children with a brother on ei-ther ―side‖ and was nine years older than the twins when they came along. Kind of an instant ―little mother‖. Not long after the arrival of the twins her father went back into active duty in the Navy and this time in the Seabees. These were the years of the Vietnam War and he served three tours and as a construction worker in ―real‖ life this was a natural fit. With Dad gone much of the time and Mom working during the day Janice developed her innate sense of responsibility and organization within the family which led to her growing into the successful woman we know today. Her childhood living near grandparents and other extended family – girlfriends all spending time together in a safe and loving environment – multi-family size garden providing instant snacks – the dairy ―down the street‖ providing Ice sculpting opportunities – ―kid-made‖ ski lifts and jumps and sled rides across the golf course – hot dog and marshmallow roasts - it all sounds exactly what we’d all like for our children and grandchildren. The big highways hadn’t been built yet, so ―the valley‖ was her backyard and all the neigh-bors knew their names and no one could get away with anything ~~they had the best of times! I enjoyed hearing so much about the area that I went on line to learn more. Here’s a link (if you’re reading this online) if you’d like to read more about her hometown. http://www.liveblaircounty.com/written-story-brief-blair-county-history Now I’d better get to her words about her life. Q. How did you end up in quake country, rather than staying in Quaker Country? A. During the summer before the start of my last year of high school my Dad returned home from Vietnam and was transferred to Port Hueneme. In our family, where your family goes, you go. YIKES! California! I instantly became a hometown celebrity! Hollywood! Movie Stars! Palm trees! Q. What did you want to be when you “grew up”? A. An airline stewardess. But first I was too young. Next thing I knew I was too involved in my life as it was to consider doing anything else. Q. What was your first job? A. I was attending Ventura College when my mother suggested I take the Civil Service exam since we were a military family and would be moving around. Within a short time I was working as a civilian employee of the Navy. After time, experience, and promotions I wound up in the Acquisition/Contracting Department. I retired as a Contracting Officer and Team Lead. The job was fascinating and was always a challenge. I’m glad I had it – and when it was time – I was glad to retire, knowing I had done a good job and had provided a valuable service for our country.

Page 10: Soroptimist International of Camarillo...Board of Directors 2011– 2012 President Barbara Hatch 484-8624 President-Elect Barbara Baham 485-0418 Vice President Fundraiser Chris Hinds

Q. How did you happen to get into what you are doing today? A. Well, when I retired, I did what many of us do. I cleaned house. I emptied and organized closets. I shopped. I got bored. I didn’t want a full-time demanding career - I wanted a job I could enjoy in an environ-ment that suited me. Macy’s was a logical choice. Just imagine, being able to ―virtually‖ spend your time doing what you enjoy doing. Meeting people, helping people, building shopping lists in your mind, and going home without having the job on your mind and getting in the way of relaxation. After about a year there was an opening in the Executive Offices (I had been working on the floor). Macy’s had instituted a job-share ap-proach where several of us work part-time spread over the day, providing Admin services and Customer Support all the hours the store is open. I work with some great gals. Many of them have been in retail for YEARS and the stories they can tell would fill a couple of books. It’s always a new day a new story and al-ways very enjoyable! Q. Would you like to tell me about your family? A. I love to talk about them. My son Nathan lives about 10 minutes away from us with his wife Leah and our grandchildren Carson (6), Matthew (3) and the baby Ella. And you know Kristina. She lives about 10 minutes away (but in the other direction). I could tell you a lot about her but I’d better leave her story to her. My husband Michael and I are very proud of each and every one of them. Carson is reading now so we let him have the floor at bedtime! It’s so fun to watch them grow! We are USC fans and have season tickets for football and enjoy this as a family! My father passed away about 3 years ago and mother passed last year. They lived in Port Hueneme and then China Lake, Ca. (near me and my brother) and even after moving to Mississippi (near my sister) and Virginia (near my other two brothers) we all stayed very close. Q. Do you have any hobbies? A. Yes, several. Quilting, cooking, spending time in Lake Arrowhead with my sister-in-law. Time with the grandchildren – probably my favorite. Oh, and shopping. I’m a non-discriminating, non-denominational shopper. ;) Q. How did you get involved in Soroptimist? A. My daughter Kristina invited me to come with her. She had just joined and she said ―Mom, I think you’ll like the members and what they do.‖ I went. I did. And I do. It’s wonderful to be involved with a group that makes you effectively ―bigger‖ than you are. Q. Is there one project we’ve done that stands out in your mind as your favorite? A. I’d have to say it’s the packages we send to the women in the military. And I’m excited about what we’re planning to do with the young women in foster care. Q. Last question - If you were doing this interview (with a sister Soroptimist) – who would you like to “get to know better?” A. Everybody! We all have a great story to tell even if we don’t know it!
