Cultural plant from 2012
We are calling back last year's culture plants, Dendrobium teretifolia, for a
show and tell session at the August meeting. Bring them in regardless of
condition so we can all learn a bit about how to grow this species better. There
should be a few mature plants in flower at this meeting so we can see what the
little seedlings can develop into over time.

No JUDGES MEETING IN SEPTEMBER
ARTICLES FOR NEXT JOURNAL
Items for the August journal need to reach the Editor by 6th of September.
Winners of trophies at the 2011 Spring Show should
return them at the August meeting so that they are ready
for the next Show.
NOSSA SPRING SHOW 22-23 SEPTEMBER 2012 St Bernadette’s Hall, South Road, St Marys
Plants for display and sale can be taken to St Bernadette’s Hall on Friday 21st September between the
hours of 2pm and 8pm. If you cannot get to the show setup until after work, please notify Bodo
Jensen (Show Marshall) or Bill Dear of your estimated arrival time to ensure the hall remains open.
Judging will commence at 8am on Saturday 22nd
. The show will be open to the public from 10am.
Entries in the Floral Art section have until 10am Saturday to complete their arrangements. We need
all your flowering plants to make a show. Remember it is a show not just a contest. Your plants are
there to impress and create interest amongst the general public, not just because they are expected to
win a prize.
Nomination forms will NOT be required. All plants will be judged. If you have not owned the plant
for six months or more or you do not wish your plant to be judged please indicate by placing the
letters NFJ on your plant label attached to the plant. Plants damaged in transit to the show should
display a red streamer on the pot. Parts of the damaged plant, i.e. flowers that have been broken off,
must be placed on the top of the pot. The details must be written on the “Damaged Plant List” held
at the judging table; if this is done the plant will be judged in the normal way.
Orchid seedlings flowering for the first time should display a white streamer on the plant. (Note: this
class is for seedlings, not a mericlone - see definition of seedling in ‘Spring Show Conditions’
elsewhere in this Journal). Streamers will be available at the judging table.
Labels: All plants should have a label attached. The public like to see the name of the orchid they
are looking at. Please take care in writing your labels ensuring they are easily readable and attach
them to the plant so the judges and the public can see them.
The show closes at 4pm on Sunday 23rd
. All plants to be removed by 5pm.
Please read the Spring Show Conditions elsewhere in this Journal, bring all your plants along
and enjoy the show.
Plastic bags: Please bring along to the show only plastic bags you will use yourself or
environmentally friendly bags that meet present standards.
Volunteers: are needed to man the entrance and raffle table, the trading table, answer questions and
assist the public in selecting plants.
Raffle plants: See Bodo if you have any suitable large plants in flower that can be donated as raffle
plants. Plant sales tickets can also be obtained from Bill.
No plants are for sale until the trading table opens at 10am on Saturday morning
Exhibitor Numbers. If any new growers want a number for the spring show or have forgotten their
number, see the judges at the next meeting who have a list or can arrange to get a new number for
you. Your exhibitors number is used at all orchid clubs and societies in South Australia.

Request for photographs A request from the Botanic Gardens for photographs. They have asked for photographs of the
NOSSA walks at the Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens that have people in them. They want to use the
photographs in their promotion of the Gardens.
Diuris behrii Project 2013.4 Les Nesbitt
July was a very wet month with floods in the foothills and snow on Mt. Lofty. My rain
gauge collected 262mm over the month. All plants are looking healthy although with the
rain and cold cloudy weather the Diuris leaves have grown long & floppy. At the end of
July the total number of Diuris behrii plants showing leaves was 344. Thirty six Diuris
plants are showing signs of flowering this spring, (20 clones and 16 daughter plants). The
three empty pots have been grouped together with the empty bags from 2012. No Diuris
leaves have appeared in last year’s empty bags this season. Of the three lost clones this
season only one could be replaced with a daughter tuber. We are left with 73 individual
diuris clones.
There is still no sign of any seedling leaves in pots. Some of the flasked Diuris behrii seed
is germinating with tiny white protocorms visible around the edge of the flask.
The 2 largest Pterostylis rosettes may be developing flower buds. We will try for seed on
one flowering plant and pull tubers off the other two plants in September. No buds are
visible inside the leaf of the Microtis plants in the main clone pot at this early stage.
NOSSA Conservation and Plant Growing Exercise Les Nesbitt
Seedlings in 50mm tubes will be available for $2 per plant with a limit of one plant per
member at the August meeting. Those orchids not sold at the August meeting will be
available at the September meeting for those members who missed out.
(See last month’s journal)
Culture of Dendrobium linguiforme, The tongue orchid. Les Nesbitt
In nature this species grows into large mats on rocks and trees along the east coast of NSW
and Qld. In Adelaide large plants are usually mounted on cork, tree fern or hardwood slabs
or branches. Well grown specimen plants put on a spectacular flowering show in Spring as
the whole plant is covered in feathery white flowers. It is a hardy native that requires shade
from the summer sun and regular watering in warm dry weather. This means daily watering
in summer if slab grown.
The seedlings available at the August meeting are one year out of flask. They are established
in 50mm tubes. If they are left in the tubes the creeping rhizome will climb over the rim
inside a year. I will mount my plant onto the bottom of a long cork slab. I will tap the
seedling out of its pot, shake off the bark mix and place the plant so that the roots are at the
bottom of the slab. The growing point of the plant is set facing upwards so that the plant will
grow up the slab. The roots are covered with a piece of moss and the whole lot securely tied
to the slab with nylon fishing line or old panty hose. A wire hook at the top of the slab
allows the plant to be hung up in the shadehouse facing away from the hot evening sun.
Alternatively the seedling can be mounted at eye level on a fruit tree in the back yard.

NOSSA group’s magic day Orchid hunting
R Bates
Five NOSSA members set out in one car at 6am to look for wild orchids
At our first stop on s burn we found Arachnorchis clavigera, parva, phaeoclavia, tentaculata
and venusta with hybrids between the later and the various green comb spider orchids. Fire
orchids (Pyrorchis) were in thousands as were Leptoceras and the tiny Microtidium. And
what with beard orchids, pink fingers, Glossodia, donkeys and sun orchids the cameras were
running hot.
Our second stop at Longbottoms turned up some brilliant red Arachnorchis formosa and a
surprisingly red A cardiochila as well as their hybrid. The sun orchids here were the
enigmatic T alcockiae.
Stop three had a neat array of Arachnorchis hastata but we were soon on our way to see
Pterostylis cucullata ssp cucullata near Nelson. A single flower was found under a grass
tussock and we realised that if it
was so hard to find it could still
be on the Limestone coast. A
tenth spider orchid, green and
gold A aff fragrantissima was
found in good numbers at Swan
Lake and this was the tenth
Arachnorchis in flower for the
day!
With dusk fast approaching we
headed to Caroline Forest
Reserve south of Mt Gambier
and a patch of gaping bird
orchids Simpliglottis aff valida
in good flower even a rare
double header. This was the first
any of us had seen of this
species in SA and imagine our
delight at finding a second
Simpliglottis, S. cornuta, the shy
bird orchid as both green lip and
red lip forms. With some fifty
different wild orchids in flower
for the day. An estimated 1000
plus images had been taken
between us.
Many thanks were due to Dave
Horsell and Thelma Bridle for
69
location info and to our transporters Kevin and Lois Sneemilch. I doubt we will ever
experience a day like it again.
The following day we found a whole different set of orchids at Honans NFR including the
brilliant Stegostyla aff iridescens, tiny Caladenia pusilla and plenty of Calochilus
paludosus.

Winner July 2013 Picture Competition
Rosalie Lawrence
Well this month had to be a record number of entries – twelve. It was good to have a picture of a
Dendrobium, reminding us that Australian orchids consist of more than just the terrestrials. The
winner though was Lorraine Badger’s Diuris orientis, always a favourite and very photogenic.
The other entries were from Claire Chesson (CC), Errol Shepherd (ES), Helen Lawrence (HL),
Jeff Ranford (JF 3rd
), Lesley Gunn (LG 3rd
), Rosalie Lawrence (RAL 2nd
), Kris Kopicki (KK),
Doug Castle (DC) and Pauline Meyer (PM 3rd
).

or [email protected] (Subject: Competition)
D orientis (common name – Wallflower
Orchid) is a common species, well
conserved across southern Australia.
In recent years, this species has featured
in some research papers notably by Dr
Fran MacGillivray.
Fran is involved with TREND –
Transects for Environmental Monitoring
and Decision Making – which looks at
species and ecosystems changes over
space and time.
In her paper, she examined records –
herbaria and photographic – from 1897 to
2005 and concluded that the Wallflower
orchid now flowers 16 days earlier.*
Such a conclusion could not have been
reached if the data had not been collected
over the decades. The people recording
the information were not thinking how it
would be used but they recorded their
observations and we have inherited a
wealth of information.
More information about our orchids can be found in South Australia’s Native Orchids DVD-ROM,
