“Orchid Nutrition”
Speaker’s Choice Coelogyne cristata
Grown by Nick Braemer
George Hatfield has published articles in the American Orchid Society Awards Quarterly and the Cymbidium Society of America CSA Journal. George is an orchid judge for both the CSA and AOS, and is currently the Chairman of the Santa Barbara judging region for the CSA. George will share his experience and knowledge with our group through a dynamic slide show and lecture. He will talk to us about orchid nutrition and make himself available for questions and discussion at our culture session. We will meet George at Mimi's cafe for 'Dinner with the Speaker' at 5:30PM the evening of the meeting. Hatfield’s Orchid Nursery will provide the plant table. Nick

February President’s Message
February will be a busy month for the South Bay Orchid Society. We have our Spring Show February 15th & 16th and the following weekend will be our monthly meeting on February 21st. For our show, we will appreciate all the volunteers and food donations we can get. If you are willing to help work or donate food, call the people listed in Marla’s article. This show is our chance to show the members of our community what our society is all about, our love of orchids! Please spread the word about our show, pass out the flyers, and invite your friends.
Start looking over your plants now. Does anything need to be staked for support? Are there any signs of uninvited tiny wildlife that should not be there? Do you have names for your plants or can you find their names? The week of the show you can do those last minute plant preparations like trimming off the dead leaf tips and shining the leaves with a solution of milk and water. You can also add fresh bark to any pots where your bark level is too low. Please remember, don’t put your plants in fancy pots. Keep the focus on the plants. We want our plants to impress both the judges and our guests.
The Friday after our show will be our regular meeting night. We hope to see you there to listen to George Hatfield tell us about orchid nutrition. All of our plants will be happier if we learn about their nutritional needs! That night you can again bring in you plants for judging. This time you can include those plants that waited to bloom just after the show. There are always some that time it just that way!
I look forward to seeing you at the show and the February meeting.

If you haven’t signed up to help at the show, our committee chairs are still waiting to hear from
you. I also want to encourage everyone to bring in their blooming orchids to the show. This is
a great opportunity to show off your plants, win ribbons, and maybe even a trophy.
Set-up: Takes place on Friday afternoon beginning at 1:00pm. This involves setting up
and arranging tables as well as draping of the display tables. We will also need people to help
bring things from storage on Friday morning. Call Ron Henry at (310) 374-9699 or Larry
Bergen at 310-326-5405.
Host and Hostess: People are needed throughout the show hours to talk to our guests and
answer questions they may have. This position is also important for security. You need to
makes sure no one touches the plants or walks off with one. (Plant theft is a serious problem at
some shows.) This position also includes the plant hotel table and the ticket sales area. Call
Kayo Libiano at (310) 897-8085 to volunteer on Saturday and Charlie Brown at (310) 377-7083
to volunteer on Sunday.
Food: Lots of food is needed to feed our hungry volunteers and vendors throughout the
show. We have been short on food the last few shows so please bring a casserole, salad, fried
chicken etc. when you come to work your shift. If you are bringing food on Sunday, it needs to
be there by 11:30 am. Call Joann Green at (310) 830-1585.
Publicity: Karen Low is in charge of publicity. Everyone can help by putting up
posters and passing out flyers in their neighborhoods
Plant Registration: Registration will take place on Friday in the show room beginning
at 4:00pm and ending at 9:00pm. I hope everyone will bring in their blooming plants for
judging. I have noticed that some of the best plants have been in the novice category so don’t
be shy about putting your plants in the show for ribbon judging. All we ask is they have been
in your possession for a minimum of three months and be free of pests and disease. We will
have AOS and CSA judging for those of you with exceptional plants in bloom. The
classification list and registration slips are available on our website at:
http://www.southbayorchidsociety.com/Show/index.html
Volunteering a few hours of your time is a great way to get to know your fellow society
members and we always have a good time. Call me if you have any questions about the show
or the volunteer positions.
