Kelly Cup Finals Shift To Lowcountry For Game 3 Sunday Trailing 2-0 to the Colorado Eagles in the 2017 Kelly Cup Finals, the South Carolina Stingrays will attempt to come back from two games down for the third time this postseason when the series shifts to North Charleston this week. A full week has passed since Game 2 on May 28, which the Eagles won 3-2. South Carolina won the Eastern Conference, advancing to the league’s finals for the fifth time in team history and the second time in three years. The runner-up in the Mountain Division during the regular season, Colorado defeated Idaho in five games, Allen in six games and most recently Toledo in five games to advance to the championship round for the first time in the team’s ECHL history. If necessary, the teams will return to Loveland for Games 6 and 7 on June 9-10.

Power Play Goal In Third Gives Eagles 2-0 Series Lead The Colorado Eagles increased their Kelly Cup Finals series lead to 2-0 with a 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays in Game 2 last Sunday night at the Budweiser Event Center. South Carolina tallies were scored by forward Steven McParland and defenseman Steve Weinstein in a losing effort, while goaltender Parker Milner started his 20th postseason game in the 2017 Kelly Cup Playoffs and made 26 saves. Colorado outshot the Stingrays in the game 29-27 and was 2-for-5 on the power play while South Carolina finished 1-for-4 on the man-advantage.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYSOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYScouting The EaglesColorado finished the regular season with an overall record of 47-20-2-3 and 99 points, which was second-best in the ECHL’s Mountain Division and third in the Western Conference. Forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel led the team with 88 points (24 goals, 64 assists) while playing in all 72 regular season games. Matt Garbowsky was right behind with 81 points and led the team with 36 goals. Forward Luke Salazar also had a big year, eclipsing the 70-mark with 77 points (30 goals, 47 assists). Defenseman Matt Register led the blueliners in scoring with 64 points (18 goals, 46 assists). Goaltender Clarke Saunders was the team’s mainstay in net, playing in 38 games with a record of 28-7-1, a goals against of 2.60 and a save percentage at 0.913. But Saunders has not been with the team during the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Forward Alex Belzile leads the squad and the entire ECHL in playoff scoring with 24 points on 14 goals and 12 assists, while Register has 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) and defenseman Jake Marto has 16 points (four goals, 12 assists). Netminder Lukas Hafner has played 14 games in between the pipes during the postseason with a GAA of 2.44 and a save percentage at 0.902.

All-Time History vs. ColoradoAlthough Colorado joined the ECHL at the start of the 2011-12season, the Eagles and Stingrays had never met before this year. Intheir first-ever series back in November the Eagles got the best ofthe Rays, winning two of three games in North Charleston. Colorado again won two of three when the teams played another series during the first week of March in Loveland but South Carolina was victorious in the last regular season matchup with a 4-1 win on Mar. 4. Milner Saving His Best For The Postseason Goaltender Parker Milner has been great in between the pipes for South Carolina during the postseason. While starting in all of the Rays’ 20 playoff games, Milner has a goals against average of 2.20, a save percentage at 0.920, three shutouts and 12 wins. The netminder is high among the league leaders in all categories during the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Milner will be happy to return home for Game 3, having done his best work in North Charleston during the postseason with a GAA of 1.44 to go along with a save percentage at 0.950. McParland Showing Consistency In Finals Rookie forward Steven McParland has scored for South Carolina in both games of the Kelly Cup Finals against Colorado despite the team being down 2-0 in the series. The left winger has had both of his tallies come from right in front of the net on goaltender Lukas Hafner. His first came on a pass by defenseman Cody Corbett in the final minutes of Game 1 to give South Carolina a lead. McParland was wide open in front of the net, controlled the pass and sent the puck past the Eagles’ netminder. Then in Game 2 on Sunday, McParland scored on a rebound from the same spot in front of the net after an initial shot by Joey Leach had been saved.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYLeaders Against Colorado Rob Flick led all Stingrays skaters during the six regular season contests against the Eagles, scoring 10 total points on six goals and four assists. Right behind Flick was Steven McParland, who was also a major contributor with nine points on three goals and six assists. Defenseman Steve Weinstein led the squad with seven assists as part of nine points in the six meetings. Forward Scott Tanski was at his best against the Eagles this year, scoring four goals and two assists for an average of a point per game in the six contests. Flick Among Top Playoff Performers Forward Rob Flick has been one of the top offensive players in the 2017 Kelly Cup Playoffs and is currently tied for fourth among all skaters in postseason scoring with 20 points. The London, Ont. native’s 11 goals and 65 shots on net are second in the ECHL, while his three game-winning goals rank third. The sixth-year forward was also the top performer for SC during the regular season with 63 points (31 goals, 32 assists) in 60 games. Tanski’s Time Forward Scott Tanski scored in the second period of Game 1 in Colorado Friday night, recording his first point of the postseason. The tally came on a deflection after an initial shot by defenseman Marcus Perrier. Tanski has played in nine playoff games for the Stingrays this spring and has put 18 shots on goal. History On Their Side During their 24-year ECHL history, the Stingrays have more playoff wins than any other franchise with 122. South Carolina has qualified for the postseason in 23 of their seasons, including 10 straight. South Carolina has now advanced to at least the Eastern Conference Finals in three consecutive years and is making their fifth appearance in the Kelly Cup Finals. The Rays’ three Kelly Cup titles are tied with Alaska for the most of any team in league history. Eagles Take Series Lead With 2OT Win After tying the contest in the final seconds of regulation, the Colorado Eagles claimed Game 1 of the Kelly Cup Finals presented by Crews Chevrolet and ABC News 4 on a power play goal by Matt Register at 10:52 of the second overtime to take a 1-0 series lead late Friday night at the Budweiser Event Center. South Carolina goals were scored by Scott Tanski and Steven McParland, while goaltender Parker Milner was excellent for the Stingrays once again and stopped 43 Colorado shots. The Eagles outshot South Carolina in the game 46-34. Stingrays Win Game 7, Advance To Kelly Cup Finals Olivier Archambault scored twice including the game-winning strike in the third period as the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Manchester Monarchs 4-3 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals Wednesday night at SNHU Arena to advance to the Kelly Cup Finals. Rob Flick and Domenic Monardo also had a goal and an assist for South Carolina in the victory, while Kelly Zajac picked up two assists and Parker Milner stopped 24 shots to earn the win. The Rays held off a few late chances by Manchester and pulled out the victory, outshooting the Monarchs 30-27.
