Each apprenticeship programme is different but generally you’ll work 30 hours a week and attend college for one day a week. You will work alongside an employer who will provide ‘on the job’ training and pay you an agreed salary. South and City College will help you work towards achieving a National Vocational Qualifi cation (NVQ) level 2 or 3 in the area you have decided to work in. We’ll also teach you skills such as English, maths and ICT that will give you a functional skills qualifi cation to showcase to future employers.

CULINARY

JAMIE OLIVERBefore he launched himself onto the BBC as ‘The Naked Chef’, Jamie Oliver worked as an apprentice and

remembered where he started when opening his restaurant, Fifteen, which thrives on apprenticeships. Each year he takes on 15 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Not bad for a man who left school with two GCSEs.

CONSTRUCTION

CHARLIE MULLINSCharlie Mullins founded Pimlico Plumbers, a company now valued at £55 million. He left school at 15 with no qualifi cations before taking up an apprenticeship. His organisation now has a turnover of £15 million per year and employs 180 people.

HAIR & BEAUTY

JOHN FRIEDAJohn started out his apprenticeship out by sweeping up clipped hair. He went on to become a personal stylist to a number of A-list stars before launching one of the biggest hair-care companies in the world.

FASHION

ALEXANDER MCQUEENAlexander grew up on a council estate and he left school with only an O-level (GCSE equivalent) in art. After learning his trade through an apprenticeship with a Savile Row tailors he went on to be one of the most renowned names in fashion.

AUTOMOTIVE & ENGINEERING

ROSS BRAWNRoss Brawn started off as a mechanical craft apprentice and went on to qualify as an instrument mechanic. He is now one of the biggest names in Formula One despite never getting behind the wheel in the sport. He’s been involved with Ferrari, Brawn and Mercedes, who purchased his company for £110 million back in 2009.

If you aren’t quite ready for an apprenticeship then a traineeship might be the right path for you. Traineeships are a new scheme which can help you gain the experience employers are looking for and can lead to a paid apprenticeship. It’s a stepping stone for those who have left school but don’t quite have the skill set yet to gain a full apprenticeship.

“It has boosted my confi dence, given me the opportunity to learn and allowed me to get the experience I needed to get a job. I would recommend to any young person who is struggling to fi nd work to look into taking up a traineeship as it’s helped me to turn things around.”

Amy was applying for jobs for four years with no success. She did a traineeship and was then offered a paid apprenticeship with Birmingham City Council.

Amy said: “I had been applying for jobs for four years but with no success. The problem was my lack of experience and even though I’d done volunteer work, I still wasn’t able to secure a job.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?

An apprenticeship is a paid job that provides practical training in a workplace with the added support of a nationally recognised qualifi cation which you’ll study at South and City College.

Apprenticeships can take from one to four years to complete and offer you a variety of industries to work in.

HOW AM I EDUCATED THROUGH ANAPPRENTICESHIP?

An apprenticeship is based on a number of frameworks which form the overall qualifi cation. It is overseen by the Sector Skills Council. The majority of apprenticeship frameworks follow a basic design which includes:

● A National Vocational Qualifi cation (either level 2 for intermediate apprenticeships or level 3 for advanced apprenticeships)

● Knowledge based qualifi cation in your line of work● Transferable skills to develop your employability

The college provides the theory and knowledge to develop skills while the employer provides the practical experience to test you in a work environment. Training can be done in a number of ways from classroom based, to workshops or to the workplace, depending on the industry, job role and the college curriculum.

HOW WILL AN APPRENTICESHIP BEBENEFICIAL TO ME IN THE FUTURE?

Research shows ■:

● People who were on an intermediate apprenticeship earn on average around £64,000 more over their career than those with a level 2 qualifi cation or below

● People who were on an advanced apprenticeship earn on average £100,000 more over their career than those with a qualifi cation at level 2 or below

After completing an apprenticeship:

● 85% of apprentices will remain in employment*● 64% of apprentices continue to work for the same employer*● 75% of those in work reported taking on more responsibility in

their job*● Organisations believe qualifi ed apprentices are 15% more

employable than people with other forms of qualifi cations ▲

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTSFOR AN APPRENTICESHIP?

Each apprenticeship has it’s own qualifi cation requirement. Often the basic requirements are:

● You must live in England● You must be aged 16 or over● Ready to start work● Not have a degree

WILL I STILL BE ENTITLED TO HOLIDAYS?

Just like any other employee, apprentices are given a minimum of 20 days paid holiday per year.

WILL I HAVE TO PAY TAX AND NATIONALINSURANCE?

All employees over the age 16 must pay tax and National Insurance but if you’re earning £3.30 an hour (minimum apprentice wage) you will be under the threshold and won’t be required to do so.

Iram came to the college two years ago as a business and admin apprentice within the college’s very own business services team.

“I didn’t want to do the academic route and felt much more comfortable learning in a practical way. I’ve now been in South and City College’s business services team for two years – I feel like I’ve found what I want to do as a career.

“I have gained qualifications as well as job experience. I’ve completed my level 2 in business and administration and I’ll be finishing my level 3 in October.

“Being an apprentice means you’re able to earn money whilst training. It can be really hard to juggle your education with a part time job but an apprenticeship is the best of both – the student experience and earning a living.”

“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others – if you’re like me and are looking for a more hands on way to learn then they might be the thing for you.

“My apprenticeship has given me the focus and confidence in myself now to make my goals a reality.”

WoRKS:Specsavers, Birmingham

After realising going to university wasn’t for him, and having no luck in finding a job, Andrew realised an apprenticeship would give him the hands-on training he enjoyed as well as the independence of being paid a regular salary.

Andrew said: “I applied for an apprenticeship through the National apprenticeship Service, and the college got in touch with me about an interview for a vacancy with Specsavers. The college gave me some advice on doing well in an interview and I got the job. I felt really supported.

“For me, the best thing about the apprenticeship is having a job and getting paid. I have friends in university who have loans and will leave with no experience or guarantee of a job, and a big debt. After three years, I will have completed my apprenticeship and been working for a couple of years, whilst getting paid and not having any debts.”

“I have gained a sense of independence, and I have a real sense of achievement. I think more people should do apprenticeships.”
