Dear South County Friends and Neighbors,

In 1976, when Millard and Linda Fuller first started talking about the idea of eliminating poverty housing and homelessness in the world, the idea of people helping people by building simple, affordable homes in their local community and throughout the world must have seemed like an incredibly naïve vision. Yet today, Habitat for Humanity International has completed the 500,000th home and our own affiliate – South County Habitat for Humanity – is about to begin our 45th home in 21 years! Since joining the Board of Directors in 2005, I‟ve had the wonderful opportunity to witness the amazing growth of our local Habitat organization. In the last six years, South County Habitat has moved into our own building, opened the first and only ReStore in Rhode Island, built 7 new homes, developed an exceptional staff, and improved management systems. I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish together! This is all thanks to our volunteers – the heart of Habitat for Humanity! I am continually humbled by the amazing individuals I have had a chance to work with and get to know, and I am in awe of the hundreds of hours they commit to this cause. Whether it is working on a home site, helping in the office or ReStore, serving on the Board or a Committee, making lunches for other volunteers, participating in Habitat events, or providing financial support to help us continue the mission, Habitat volunteers generously use the gifts they‟ve been given in the service of others. I‟ve found that in such giving, there is receiving as well. Building a house alongside a hardworking homeowner family, then watching them receive their keys at a home dedication is emotionally powerful – it feeds the soul. It seems so right to take action in this way – as practical as putting a homeless family into a home, and as lofty as faith being put into practice as a demonstration of God‟s love for our neighbors. Bless, and be blessed; give and you shall receive. Since 1990, South County Habitat has built 44 homes here in South County, and financed more than 70 Habitat houses worldwide; welcoming home more than 60 adult homeowners and 105 children here in South County alone. We have been so blessed, individually and as an organization, with support, love, and perhaps more importantly – hope. Thank you for whatever part you have had in our success, and we hope you will join us in “building houses, building hope!”

Sincerely,

Deedra Durocher, President

22001100--22001111 AAccccoommpplliisshhmmeennttss Our mission is to change lives for families living in substandard housing in South County by building safe, decent, affordable homes for and with them. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, we:

► FOCUSED ON FAMILIES IN SOUTH COUNTY

Built our 20th Anniversary House in Charlestown in partnership with the Northup Family

Resold a Habitat house in Hopkinton to the Bergeron Family

Rehabbed a Habitat house in Westerly

Worked on 6 projects through our Hope Rebuilders program. The projects ranged from building ramps for the elderly and injured, to helping the South County YMCA repair their facilities, to helping local churches with repairs.

► STRENGTHENED OUR MANAGEMENT PROCESS

Developed a comprehensive employee handbook and updated affiliate policies

Revised the financial accounting procedures to better align with IRS 990 requirements

► CONTRIBUTED TO GLOBAL BUILDERS

Tithed $7,691 to help Habitat affiliates in developing countries worldwide

Raised $15,000 to support building efforts in earthquake-devastated Haiti and Chile (with support from the URI “Building Homes” Campaign, an anonymous donor associated with URI, and through generous donations to South County Habitat for Humanity (SCHH).

For the first time, I don’t have

to worry about my children. My

son can move around freely in his

wheelchair and my daughter has a

house to call her home. Thank you

to everyone who helped me get

this home.

Celeste Northup, SCHH Homeowner

“ “We met a little 8-year-old girl with a physical handicap who wasn’t able to leave her house to attend physical therapy. Through our ‘Hope Rebuilders’ program, South County Habitat volunteers were able to build an exercise therapy area for her, so she can now do her rehab in her own home! It’s great to be able to make that kind of a difference in the life of a child.” ~Jay Shartenberg, SCHH Director of Operations

Looking to the Future

In March 2010, SCHH held a Strategic Planning Retreat attended by the Board of Directors, Staff, and some key Volunteers. The retreat, facilitated by Tony Silbert of Innovation Partners International and underwritten by a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, helped SCHH look to the future. Here are some of the plans we developed:

► BUILD FOUR HOUSES IN THE OLD NORTH VILLAGE PROJECT IN KINGSTON

One sponsored by URI Community

One sponsored by an Anonymous Donor

One women-built home

One giving preference to a disabled Veteran and his or her family

► PURCHASE 3-4 MORE PROPERTIES IN SOUTH COUNTY

► WORK WITH LOCAL CORPORATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS TO BE ABLE TO BUILD MORE AFFORDABLE HOMES

Page 7

“For 20 years, South County Habitat has been building houses and hope in South County. Looking ahead to the future, we want to be able to build more houses, rehab more properties, and assist more families and other local non-profits through our ‘Hope Rebuilders’ program. There has never been a time when affordable housing has been more important to our nation – especially to the hard-working, low-wage employees we serve. We feel an obligation and we have an opportunity to help our neighbors in need; we hope you join us.” ~Lou Raymond, SCHH Executive Director

HOME DESIGN PLANS

The four homes were designed by the professional architects who won the 2010 House Design Competition. The winners are: • 3-Bedroom Category: Shaun Gotterbarn • 3-Bedroom Category: Donald Powers Architects, Team 1 • 4-Bedroom Category (Overall Winner): Kuhn Riddle Architects

“It was very exciting to receive more than 20 creative and beautiful entries for our

first-ever House Design Competition; Judging them was unexpectedly difficult! In the end, we chose three winners, and two of the winning designs are being used on Old North Road.” ~ Tom Weber, SCHH Volunteer Competition Judge

THE PROJECT In 2011 and 2012, South County Habitat for Humanity will be working to develop one of our most ambitious projects to date – Old North Village. These four Habitat homes on the north side of the University of Rhode Island campus will be built in partnership with local families in need of a hand up. The three 3-bedroom homes and one 4-bedroom home will all be Energy-Star rated for energy efficiency and LEED-certified for environmental friendliness; they will also be handicapped-accessible. SITE DEVELOPMENT South County Habitat worked for several years to work out a property trade agreement with the University of Rhode Island, then took another year to shepherd the comprehensive permits through the building process. We are using state-of-the-art landscaping techniques to ensure environmental friendliness and minimize impact on the environment and the neighborhood. Thanks to the lawyers, town officials, and local supporters that made this project a reality.

Old North Village

The Old North Village Groundbreaking Ceremony was

held in May 2011.

The event was widely attended by URI students and staff, local dignitaries, South County Habitat for Humanity volunteers, and supporters of

Affordable Housing.

► URI-SPONSORED HOUSE: “BUILDING HOMES” CAMPAIGN Students, staff, and faculty at the University of Rhode Island have been working for more than a year on fundraising $75,000 to build one of the houses on Old North Road, and also houses in Haiti and Chile in response to the devastating earthquakes there. We would like to give special thanks to the “URI Building Homes Campaign” Co-Chairs Rev. Lynn Baker-Dooley and Gail Faris; the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Association and Steve Simo; the Feinstein Center for Student Leadership and Sarah Miller; the Center for Student Leadership and Melissa Boyd-Colvin; Women’s Volleyball and Bob Schneck; the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC); the Alumni Association; URI Habitat Chapter; and the entire URI Community.

► ANONYMOUS DONOR HOUSE An anonymous donor associated with URI has generously donated $80,000 to sponsor one of the South County Habitat houses on Old North Road as well as houses in Haiti and Chile.

► WOMEN-BUILT HOUSE This house will be entirely built and supervised by female volunteers, who will also help with the fundraising necessary to build. Our enthusiastic and dedicated Thursday Women’s Crew will lead this effort. We plan to provide many opportunities for local women’s groups, corporations, and press to get involved in this high-interest house!

► VETERAN’S HOUSE American Veterans have sacrificed so much for our country and for each of us; South County Habitat wants to give something back. In our search for a homeowner, preference will be given to disabled American Veterans and their families. We will be collaborating with numerous area military groups, veterans’ organizations, and interested businesses and individuals who support the hard work of our service men and women and believe in giving a hand up to those who have given so much for the rest of us.

“Just a few years ago, I was living with my son in a tenement with 16 other apartments. I never dreamed I would be able to own a home. Now, every time I come home I look at my beautiful house and think:

„I can‟t believe it‟s true; it‟s really mine!‟

I pinch myself when I remember that I now have something real to leave to my son.”
