Lent is about humility and self-examination – not guilt Creator of all things, You have made us from the dust of the earth. You breathed into us your own vitality. Yet each of us must one day render back to you the life we have on loan from you. It shall be required of us that we lay down all of our pomp and pride and return to dust. So teach us to consider the brevity of our days that we may live them out with wisdom, as a people redeemed and made new by the power of the cross of Jesus. Amen. (This Day: A Wesleyan Way of Prayer, p. 119) When I attend a funeral or when I meet with a family after the death of a loved one, I am struck at how the “busy-ness” of life is put on hold for a time. What comes into sharp focus is the reality of death and what is most important about life, and loving and relationships. In a similar way, the observance of Lent calls us to stop and examine our lives; to remember that we are mortal; that our years and our influence are finite. We are called to look honestly at the current condition of our heart and soul and our relationships - before God. Lent is NOT about guilt. Lent is about humility and the willingness to accept anew the power of Christ’s redeeming love at work in our lives. Lent is about the possibility of growing closer to Christ; of becoming more like what God intends for us to be. Jesus meets us where we are, and like all other journeys, Jesus walks with us through Lent into the joy of Easter! Lent is about humility and self-examination – not guilt

Creator of all things, You have made us from the dust of the earth. 119)

When I attend a funeral or when I meet with a family after the death of a loved one, I am struck at how the “busy-ness” of life is put on hold for a time. What comes into sharp focus is the reality of death

and what is most important about life, and loving

and relationships.

Jesus meets us where we are, and like all other journeys, Jesus walks with us

through Lent into the joy of Easter! You are invited to observe the season of Lent with others in the congregation: 1) Adult Sunday School Lenten series: Fellowship Hall ~ 9:15 am. Bread in the Wilderness: Spiritual Famine or Gospel Feast?

[A special invitation is extended to those folks who do not attend Sunday School on a regular basis.] 2) Sunday Worship Services ~ scripture and themes to be taken from the study, Bread

in the Wilderness and lectionary readings 3) Wednesday Night Programs:

March 12 ~ Open discussion about being in a joint ministry with Primera Iglesia March 19 and 26 ~ “Invisible Child”: reflections on true story of a homeless family April 2 ~ Non-traditional Worship Service April 9 ~ Special Evening of Prayer April 16 ~ Holy Week in Story and Song (for all ages)

4) Sharing Devotions and Song at Bethany Nursing Center ~ Sat. April 9 (10 am) 5) Holy Week Services: Thursday, April 17 ~ Maundy Thursday Holy Communion 6:30 pm ~ Crievewood United Methodist Church Good Friday, April 18 ~ Tenebrae Service 6:30 pm ~ South End United Methodist Church
