Inspiring Excellence through PRIDE Principal: Mr Peter Hickey Vere Street South Grafton NSW 2460 T: 02 6642 3388 F:02 6643 2065 [email protected] Congratulations to our students who participated in the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser this term. The students raised over $2000 to support the NSW Heart Foundation. Students who fundraised participated in our school ‘JUMP OFF’ which was held in our Primary Hall last Friday. Our school will receive a rebate later this year and students involved will receive their prizes for fundraising. Congratulations to Pippa and Addison Brown who had the highest fundraising with $168 each. Thank you to our families who supported this fundraiser which also supports our wonderful skipping team. Good luck to Annabel Dungey who is participating in the Shave for Cure this Friday. This is a fantastic initiative by Annabel to individually fundraise for this wonderful cause. She will be having her head shaved this Friday at the Clocktower at 6.00pm if you would like to support her. As part of our Reward Days this term students are invited to wear their favourite team’s footy colours to support Fight Cancer Foundation’s Footy Colours Day. The day is a national fundraising campaign to support kids living with cancer. Every dollar raised supports Fight Cancer Foundation’s education programs to help kids with cancer continue with their education during treatment and recovery. All students who achieve their End of Term Reward will be able to participate in wearing their favourite football teams colours. The Infants Rewards Day will be held on Tuesday 7th April and Primary Rewards Day will be held On Wednesday 8th April. Congratulations to our Boys Cricket Team who defeated Grafton Public School 3/146 to 7/125 in the second round of the PSSA knockout yesterday at JJ Lawrence Fields. The boys played with great sportsmanship and enthusiam. We wish them good luck in the third round. Our thanks to Mr Zacek for coaching this team and Mrs Warren for scoring. On Tuesday our Year 6 students had the opportunity to attend a transition sports day at South Grafton High School. The students enjoyed playing basketball, netball, soccer and touch football. Our thanks to SGHS for providing this excellent opportunity for our students. I have included as an attachment the latest advice NSW DEC schools have been forwarded re the Coronavirus for your perusal. I will endeavour to keep our community updated on this situation as I receive advice from state office. Our school website is being continually updated by the DEC for your information. I will add also information to our Facebook page.

We have had a complaint from a resident in Bent St saying that parents picking up children in the afternoon are parking across their driveway. Please be aware of this.Have a great weekPeter Hickey Principal

Tell Them From Me SurveyIn Term 1 2020, our school is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve. Tell Them From Me Student Feedback Survey non-consent forms have be handed to students in Year’s 4, 5 & 6. These forms only need to be returned if you DO NOT want your child to participate. The surveys will be completed online during Weeks 9 and 10.

P&C News - Craft GroupCraft group is in full crafty mode making items for our Mother’s Day stall. The Craft Group is held every Wednesday morning from 9.00am at the Infant Campus. We are asking for donations of white mugs, small glass

jars, small /medium tin cans eg Milo tins or pineapple tins and pots for succulents. All donations are greatly appreciated and if you could please drop them to the Infants office. Please contact Kelly Vickers on 0419 162 075 if you require further information. Thank you for your support.

Library

Our students have many wonderful activities that they can enjoy in our Library. The Library is a great place for reading and borrowing books, but also fantastic for building and creating at our Lego table, for experimenting with robotics with the Edisons and using various types of technology including our fantastic Promethean board. Students are also enjoying playing board games, drawing and designing bookmarks. One rainy morning last week, students were even able to access the Library before school and many students participated in these fun activities. We are so grateful for such wonderful facilities!

Book Club Issue 2 has been sent home. Orders will close 3.00pm Monday 23rd March. All orders need to be online via scholastic.com.au or via the LOOP App. No cash can be received by the school. We hope you enjoy this exciting issue of Book Club.

Coronavirus (COVID -19) Information for parents and carers to support children and young people How you can support your child It is perfectly normal for children to have questions about events that are covered in the media, such as the information currently being distributed about COVID-19. Children look to the significant adults in their lives for guidance on how to manage their reactions and you can help your child by remaining calm and reassuring them. There is a common misunderstanding that talking with your child about a topic such as COVID-19 may increase their anxiety. This is not the case. It is important to listen to your child and answer their questions as honestly as possible and correct any misunderstandings. This will help them feel informed and understand what is happening. Keeping up to date with the facts from reliable sources will help keep conversations calm, considered, and constructive. Provide information in words that are appropriate to the age of your child. Children can be distressed by hearing repeated stories so monitor how much your child is being exposed to television and social media and encourage them to talk to you about what they are seeing and hearing.

Some practical advice Some practical advice for your child includes reminding them to cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze (coughing into their elbow is a useful strategy), keep their hands clean by washing them regularly with soap and water, and avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth before washing their hands. These are easy habits for children to adopt, and should help them feel as though they're able to exert some control over their circumstances. If your child must stay at home, it is important for your child to maintain a healthy lifestyle including proper diet, sleep, and social contact at home and by email and phone with family and friends

Communication is important • read the department’s response to COVID-19 for current

information • read any information sent home by the school.

• contact the school if your child becomes unwell.

Where to get help Contact the school if you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing to discuss the most appropriate support. Support is also available through a number of agencies and community organisations. Parents and carers can:

• call the National Coronavirus Health Information line (1800 020 080) • review the NSW Health COVID-19 website for the latest information

and advice • obtain help and information from the local General Practitioner or

Community Health Centre
