Commodore’s Comments
Happy New Year’s SMYC!
I am so looking forward to this year. As a Club, we are in a great
position for 2016. Financially we are on solid ground. Our member-
ship numbers are phenomenal going into the year. I personally can-
not wait for Pier Bidding in March. It should be one for the ages.
Our Board is definitely the most diverse one that I have been involved with. Katy
Steinhaus (Corresponding Secretary) is a 3rd generation SMYC’er, Ryan Rybka
(Board Member) is a 2nd generation SMYC’er, and Bob Jepson is a new member
who will be taking over the Financial Secretary position. We have three former
Commodores as Flag Officers and a very experienced Board.
The most important part of our Club is our Members. We are blessed with a great
community. I have a great example of the generosity of our community. The area
experienced a huge wind event at the end of December. One of the boats in particu-
lar lost its cover in the storm. The boat is owned by Greg Zielinski, Greg has a
medical issue which has been taking most of his time whipping this issue. Several
members decided to help him out – Tom Hoffa, Tom Schulz, Gary Gale, and An-
drew Bennett. They stepped up and recovered Greg’s boat. I received a note
from Greg stating he was so appreciative to this crew for helping him out. It is one
example of many that happen every year.
My goals for 2016 are really pretty simple:
The fun factor is a priority for the Club.
Positioning ourselves financially for the future.
Project management on infrastructure needs of the Club.
With that said our Commodores will be sharing the load throughout the year. Jan
Ruggles (Rear Commodore) will focus on the infrastructure needs through
working with the various Committees that oversee such things. Mike Gengler (Vice
Commodore) will be focusing on our financial positioning now and into the future
working with the Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and Finance Committee. That
leaves the fun factor priority to me…it will be a struggle…but I will give it the old
Commodore try! All of this focus requires the assistance of Membership. We are
all very busy people and have lives outside of the Club. If you have a passion or see
a need step up. There is always something to do around the Club. We are always
looking for someone to sponsor an event. Talk with Cheryl Rybka or myself if you
want to spread some fun. All of the various committees will need assistance and it
is a great way to meet like minded people, not to mention keep our costs under con-
trol. I will be more than happy to help you find your niche in the Club.
Don’t forget we have our annual Installation of Officers coming up January 23rd.
Tickets are available, see our incredible bartenders to sign up.
See you at the Club,
Jon Haag
