Korowai This week our Head Boy and Head Girl were presented with two beautiful feather cloaks. The rationale behind these cloaks (korowai) was to install a factor of status and pride, by acknowledging and celebrating leadership within our school and our community. Te Puawaitanga o wāhine toa- Red Korowai which will be worn by Sophie and all future head girls to acknowledge to blossoming, growth and developing of our young girls as they depart our school as knowledge-able and beautiful woman. Ngā Kakano o Tāne Mahuta-Blue Korowai Is a reflec-tion of the tools and seeds of knowledge that are gath-ered as junior boys and grown. Library

The Easter Bunny came to the library today, AND

bought eggs! If you used your manners or were

doing something quietly, chocolate was the reward.

If this weather continues it looks like it will be a

quiet holiday inside reading. I look forward to get-

ting some reviews in of the books you and your

children have read. Keep warm and safe, and enjoy

the break together.

“Take A Kid Flying” We were very excited to be chosen to participate in the “Take a kid flying” organized by the Balclutha Police. It was a new experience for us and we felt a little anxious. So on Sunday 10th May we meet at the Balclutha Aerodrome at 9.00am. We got to pick the planes we would be flying in. Take off was very smooth in the four planes. We flew to Mandeville and went to the Museum and Plane Factory, which was fun and we even got to sit in an old plane and pretend to fly it! After this we had a nice morning tea at “The Moth” - Yum yum!! We then got back in the planes - our group got to fly above the clouds and our pilot, Mr Mark Sinclair, did a sudden drop, and we were pleased our raspberry and coke stayed down. It was great fun. Rugby The 1sts and 2nds beat their James Hargest counterparts over the weekend in preparation for the upcoming Aus-tralian tour. The U14s put up a spirited fight against an older Toko team. With holidays looming, all boys’ squads have now been finalised. Coaches will be making arrangements with their teams regarding trainings. A reminder that competition rugby begins on Saturday, May 10 and matches will be played on Saturday’s throughout Term 2. At this stage, no matches have been scheduled over the holiday period. We hope to have the Girls’ squad finalised by the end of the week. Everything has now been finalised for the Australian Tour. 33 excited players and a band of staff and parents will make the trip across the ditch on Easter Sunday. Both teams will play 2 matches in Queensland, against St Ed-mund’s College and Coomera Anglican College. On be-half of all involved, I would like to give a massive shout out to our awesome community, for getting in behind the boys and making this trip possible. We promise to repre-sent you all well, both on and off the field. Greg Heller TIC Rugby

Te Ara Pai Ake-The New Pathway

On Monday South Otago High School launched there

new Kapa Haka group Te Ara Pai Ake -The new path-

way. It was necessary to create a new group so that we

will have the opportunity to submit a competing team in

the next Te Hautonga (Otago and Southland regional Sec-

ondary schools competition) The new uniforms reflect

our school learning environment and the surrounding riv-

ers Mata Au and Ko Au. The colours Purple, White and

Lime Green represent the elements that are important to

maintain good thoughts towards others and a positive

pathway forward into the future.

I would like to acknowledge the following members of

the community who have helped to contribute to the

launch of this new roopu (group) Matua William Wright,

Whaea Leila Foley and Whaea Leagan Heremaia. Ngā

Carving Workshops

On the 28th of March Kapa Haka students travelled to Waitati to be

part of the first of four carving workshops. These workshops are

NQZA approved and will generate credits for those particating. The

focus of this wananga was to design 3 pieces (Tāonga) that would

enhance the performance of Kapa Haka members. All students com-

pleted a Purerehua( Bull roarer), a Heru (Hair comb) and a koauau

(Flute). I would like to thank Mr Newnham for his outstanding skills

in the kitchen and for his support to make this a very successful ven-

ture between South Otago High School and Te Whanau Arohanui.
