South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Business In Brief
October 2017
A message from the President of the Board, Jim McGuire
Jim McGuire
General Manager of the Best
Western Plus Grosvenor Hotel
Who's hungry???
We are hoping that you all are! Why? Because it is almost time for our
famous "Taste of South San Francisco"! Can you believe this will be the
Chamber's 31st year for this delicious and fun event? That's right - this is
your chance to come TASTE and experience what more than 40 of our best
restaurants and vendors offer, right here in your own backyard! So, in the
future when you find yourself in the spot where you worked all day, or
watched the kids or had countless things to do and you just don't feel like
cooking.... you don't have to! By attending this great event, you will have
firsthand knowledge of what so many great restaurants, in your own
backyard, taste like! So, please join us on Thursday, November 2nd from
11:30AM - 1:30PM at the South San Francisco Conference Center and
bring your appetite!
Your Chamber had another busy month - I hope you had the chance to
participate in some of our great events. We had another successful
"Genentech Goes To Town" event. This is such a great program to
showcase our outstanding businesses to the thousands of employees at
Genentech. Thank you to all the merchants that participated and a BIG thank
you to Genentech! We really appreciate it!
I hope you had the chance to participate in our latest Good Morning South
San Francisco breakfast meeting at the Best Western Plus Grosvenor Hotel.
Attendees learned about Social Media Outreach by Leslie Arroyo,
Communications Director for the City of South San Francisco. I have
spoken to several members that attended the breakfast and they had several
valuable take-aways from this very informative meeting. Thank you, Leslie!
We also had a successful ribbon cutting for our Chamber Member Financial
Partners. South San Francisco is proud to be the home of their very first
Northern California office. A great event and well attended. Thank you,
Mayor Gupta and Councilmember Garbarino for attending.
As always, my constant reminder is to continuously check the Calendar of
Events on our website for updates on upcoming events. Be sure to visit the
Membership Directory and support your fellow Chamber members. Our
membership is forever growing and we are welcoming new members every
week.
Have a great October Chamber Members, and I look forward to seeing you
at our many events! See you next month!

Food For Thought
Submitted by Teresa Montgomery, Sustainability Manager
for South San Francisco Scavenger Company
According to SaveTheFood.com, up to 40% of food in the United States never
gets eaten. Each year, the average family of 4 wastes 1,000 pounds of food,
resulting in $1,500 lost. Much of the wasted food ends up in a landfill.
Changing household behavior is key to reducing the problem of food waste. We
can all do our part by pre-planning meals, buying only the groceries we need,
repurposing leftovers, and learning how to properly store foods.
We can also make a difference by placing any remaining food scraps in our
green (or black) Organics cart. South San Francisco Scavenger Company uses
the materials collected from these carts to make biogas and compost. The biogas
is used to fuel their collection vehicles which greatly reduces emissions in the
communities they serve.
We need to do our part at work as well as at home. California Assembly Bill
1826 currently requires that any business generating 4 cubic yards or more of
organic waste per week sign up for organics collection service. Starting January
1, 2019, the law will apply to many more businesses-those generating 4 cubic
yards or more of garbage per week.
Please visit SaveTheFood.com for food waste reduction tips and
CalRecycle.ca.gov for details regarding AB 1826. Visit www.ssfscavenger.com
or call 650.589.4020 for more information on organics collection service.

Legislative Watch List - We take care of politics, so you can take care of your business
Parental Leave Mandate for Small Business Passes -SB 63passed the Assembly on September 12 by a
vote of 51-15. A day later, the Senate voted 25-13 to concur in Assembly amendments to the bill, sending the
bill along to the Governor.
What is California SB 63?
California SB 63 proposes the New Parent Leave Act. The bill would require that California small businesses (20
to 49 employees) offer workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected family leave to bond with a new baby
or child.
SB 63 would allow more California workers who currently pay into paid family leave programs the ability to take
leave themselves.
If passed, SB 63 would offer employees certain family leave benefits as long as they meet the following criteria:
The employee has worked for the employer for at least 12 months.
The employee has at least 1,250 hours of service during the previous 12-month period.
The employee works at a worksite that employs at least 20 employees within a 75-mile radius.
SB 63 is much like the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) which offers the same parental leave protections to
new parents who work for an employer with 50 or more employees within a 75-mile radius.

Promoting Transparency and Accountability at the Capitol
Assembly member Kevin Mullin (SSF Chamber Member)
In an effort to promote transparency and public participation, Assembly member Mullin produced this video guide to internet resources that provide a window in to the California State Legislature. Mr. Mullin hopes that members of the public will be able to use the tools on this website to follow what is happening in the State Capitol and hold
their elected officials accountable.
