From The Publisher Matt Selby

Remembering our Friend Bruce Boore of Hattie’sCafe and Beanery

This isn’t an easy editorialpiece. The community has lost agreat man, and like so many of youwhose lives Bruce has impacted,we’ve lost a friend. Not long afterhearing about Hattie’s Cafe andBeanery closing its doors due toBruce’s medical issues, BruceBoore tragically passed away after along, hard fight. Bruce had beenbattling Crohn’s disease, and overthe years I’ve known him therewere a few times flare ups sidelinedhim for a short time; but he wouldalways be back to work not longafter with a big smile on his face asif nothing was wrong. He never letanyone know how bad it really wasbecause he wasn’t the type of guythat needed anyone to feel sorry forhim. When we heard Hattie’s wasshutting down due to Bruce’shealth I knew it must be worse

than normal, but I am still in shockthat he’s actually gone. I honestly

thought he was going to surprise usall and beat any health issues plagu-ing him and re-open the cafe. Hewas, and always will be, a specialman to so many people whose liveshe became a part of.

I first met Bruce in February2013. I walked into Hattie’sBeanery looking for the owner soI could tell them all about mynew publication I was starting inthe Carrollwood area. He wasgracious enough to listen to mypitch and give me feedback onwhat he thought. He wasn’t con-vinced that people from Carroll-wood would drive past other cafesin the area to come visit him. Iunderstood his concerns and sim-ply asked him to think about itand give me a chance. About 5pm the same day Bruce called meback and said he wouldn’t mindgiving me a shot for one month

to see how it goes. Even thoughit wasn’t a long term contract,Bruce was the first business to be-lieve in me by signing up to ad-vertise, and it really meant a lot.Fast forward to December 2015 -Bruce never missed an issue sincehe started! He loved our maga-zine, and was a major reason ourpublication grew over the pastfew years, because he was alwaystelling other local businessesabout his great experience withus. I’ll always be grateful for hiskindness and regret never gettingthe chance to tell him how muchit meant to me that he gave me achance before anyone else did.

We will never forget youBruce. Thank you for providingthis community with your wonder-ful soul and passion for some of thebest coffee and delicious food thistown has ever seen.

Mini Doughnut FactoryBy Alexis Selby

Bringing a little taste of Heavento South Tampa, husband and wifeduo Patrick and Zezura Ruddell haveteamed up to open Mini DoughnutFactory, a fabulous new shop thatserves gourmet mini-doughnuts, cof-fee, espresso, lattes, smoothies anddoughnut shakes!

Opening just over two monthsago, Mini Doughnut Factory is takingTampa by storm, quickly becoming alocal hangout for people all across thebay area! And, after stopping by lastweek, I can easily see why they haveacquired such a loyal following withinsuch a short time of opening theirdoors. Serving up some of the fresh-est, tastiest doughnuts I have evereaten, if you have not checked outMini Doughnut Factory, I highly rec-ommend you stop on by!

The perfect cheat-sized sweet, these mini doughnuts won’t makeyou feel guilty, and provide the per-fect amount of deliciousness to satisfyyour craving. Made to order, you cantaste the freshness from the momentyou take your first bite. Patrick says,“We care more about our products

than any other doughnut or coffeeshop in town. We will not let adoughnut leave that isn’t Facebookor Instagram worthy.”

As William Cowper once said,“Variety's the very spice of life, thatgives it all it's flavor”, this saying defi-nitely rings true at Mini DoughnutFactory. With thousands of toppingcombinations to choose from, the pos-sibilities are practically endless. Patricksays, “We are the first to offer minidoughnuts made to order. What weare doing has never been done beforewith mini doughnuts, especially withall our topping options.”

On our previous visit, Zezura andPatrick had us sample some of theirsignature selections, including theCamp Fire, a vanilla cake doughnuttopped with chocolate icing, grahamcracker crumbs and marshmallows, theRice Krispy Treat, a vanilla cakedoughnut topped with a glaze, RiceKrispies and marshmallow drizzle, andtheir French Toast, a vanilla cakedoughnut with cinnamon and maplesyrup. All I can say is that these are noordinary doughnuts! As you bite intothe warm dough, it literally melts inyour mouth, and the combinations of

flavors are out of this world amazing! The most popular of their dough-

nut creations – their Cotton Candy - issure to spark your taste buds. An ab-solutely unique flavor experience, thisdoughnut is comprised of a vanillacake doughnut topped with straw-berry icing and cotton candy poprocks; even after you have finished thepop rocks continue to elicit the divineflavor as they go off in your mouth. This was definitely one of my favorites, although their Sweet Pig - a vanillacake doughnut topped with mapleicing and bacon - was a close second.

"Sweet and savory, the Sweet Pigtastes like eating a pancake with baconand syrup,” says Zezura.

And, why not have both? That’sthe best part about mini-doughnuts,you don’t have to feel guilty abouteating more than one! “When youbuy a big doughnut you are commit-ted to that one flavor,” says Zezura.“The beauty of the mini doughnut isthat it gives you the ability to trymultiple different flavors. That’swhat makes the concept pretty coolin itself.”

Another customer favorite is the

Peanut Butter Crunch, a vanilla cakedoughnut topped with peanut buttericing and crushed butterfingers. Andto answer the question you probablyhave in your head - yes it is every bit asincredible as it sounds!

In addition to their signaturedoughnuts, you also have the optionof creating your own doughnut fromtheir endless list of yummy toppings!Zezura says, “We love coming up withnew ideas and collaborating to come

up with new flavors."But, as incredibly delicious as

their mini-doughnuts are, they aren’tall they have become known for. “Wehave the freshest coffee,” says Patrick.“All of our coffee beans are groundfresh; we will never keep a bean longerthan 7-10 days. We have quite a fewregulars that come in just for our cof-fee – it’s that good!”

Mini doughnuts are perfect forparties, special occasions and get to-

gethers, and since opening, cateringhas already comprised a huge portionof their business. The perfect bite-sized treat, mini doughnuts are easy toeat and the presentation alone isenough to wow! Family Fun with Horses at Suncoast Stables Suncoast Stables, located at 1108

Altamont Lane in Odessa FL, has afun, family-friendly event planned forSaturday, February 20th. Stableowner Krystle Lee invites the commu-nity to come out and meet the horses. The fun begins at 5 p.m. with a barntour, but that is just the beginning ofan evening of fun and horsing around! There will also be a horseback ridingdemonstration, a grooming stationdemonstration and a chance to win a4-pack of free riding lessons. Andwhat better way to wrap up an eveningof horseplay than a free, kid-friendlyhorse movie watched on a blanketunder the stars?

This event is free but bring somecash because there will be food anddrinks for purchase, as well as facepainting for the kids. Proceeds willbenefit Suncoast Stables’ Youth Cluband Saving Grace for Equines, a501(c) 3 non-profit organization fo-cused on the rescue of American Sad-dlebred horses. Krystle grew uparound horses and enjoyed competingas a juvenile and amateur in the Amer-ican Saddlebred arena, so the rescue of

this breed is one she is happy to helpsupport. The driving force and pas-sion behind Saving Grace for Equinesis Joy Rodak.

Kristen Pawlowski, who sent usthe event information hoping to gethelp with publicity, says, “These girlslove these horses…from mucking stallsto the show ring and it really teachesthem respect for animals, disciplineand responsibility. They all supporteach other and it is just a wonderfulexperience!”

Saving Grace for EquinesJoy Rodak loves horses. She has

shown American saddlebred horses for20 years, and for the past few years, she has headed up a horse rescue inOcala, Florida. In October 2013, Joybought six American saddlebredhorses from a meat broker to savethem from being sent to a slaughter-house in Canada. By December ofthat year, she’d started Saving Gracefor Equines and was determined tosave more horses that still have plentyof healthy years left.

While it is illegal to slaughter

horses for meat in the United States, they are still shipped to Canada andMexico and processed for human con-sumption. Joy knows that there ismuch more to be done but feels itsimportant to do what she can to sup-port a growing need, stating, “It’s nota lot, but we are doing our part alongwith the other saddlebred rescues inthe country.”

Saving Grace for Equines has res-cued numerous horses experiencinginhumane treatment and conditions, including starvation, abuse, unsafehabitats, and some of those are boundfor slaughter for human consumption. Many horses are abused and neglectedbefore being sent to “kill brokers”where they are purchased by the high-est bidder, and some of those are con-tracted by slaughterhouses.

“These are very nice horses thatcan still serve a purpose,” says Joy.Many times the original seller oftenhas no idea what can befall their horseand Joys says most of the owners areunknowing participants.

The horses rescued usually havesome physical issues. They are often

malnourished and need dental work.Saving Grace for Equines works ontheir nutrition for three or fourmonths before they are ready foradoption. Saving Grace for Equinesrelies on donations and sponsorshipsto operate.
