Welcome to another newsletter! Yes, February has crept up on us and January doesn’t seem to have been such a long month after all. The monthly and mid-monthly meetings were slightly down on numbers but that was partly due to colds and flu symptoms etc. We hope those affected are recovering or have recovered well. Thirty-three members attended the AGM held on 11th January. The minutes and supporting documents were circulated to all members. Many thanks to Ian Galloway for taking the minutes and writing them up. There is a list of the mid-monthly venues and an inventory of items held by the club. If you would like to use any of these please contact me in the first instance. The mid-monthly at The Elm Tree coincided with their quiz evening. Four of us joined in and came close to upsetting the local challengers, who obviously enjoy pub quizzes as a matter of routine. We were one point off winning a cash prize in the picture round and came a creditable third out of six teams in the overall quiz. Our music round let us down! Apparently, we will be allowed back! This month sees the MG & Triumph Spares Day at Stoneleigh on 19th and the London Classic Car Show at the ExCel Arena 23rd-26th. The mid-monthly which will be at The Swan at Lyndhurst on the 15th February.

New Forest Run 2017 I am pleased to say that Adam Brown of Solent Bearings has offered to provide the primary sponsorship for our run this year. Adam is of course husband to our newsletter editor Karen. Thank you, Adam. The run plates and finishers plaques have been submitted to our provider, ahead of a 15% cost increase! In mid-January, Jon Holt, Malcolm Rumsey and myself went down to the South Lawn hotel to meet with Nikki and Tim, the owners to go through our intentions. They will be making adjustments to allow pedestrian access from the field to the hotel. The sheep will be fenced off to one side of the field behind the hotel. We have arranged a meeting for Wednesday 22nd March at the Empress of Blandings to confirm arrangements. Christmas Dinner – Saturday 16th December 2017 You will have seen an email indicating three choices for our annual Christmas Dinner. Unfortunately, the company which runs the Moorhill House Hotel, and others in the New Forest have weddings booked for each hotel on each Saturday through December so we have had to look elsewhere. At the moment, I haven’t had too many responses but there is a clear leader. I must notify the chosen hotel by the end of next week so please let me have your choice no later than the evening of the monthly meeting on 1st February. Adrian Mullins has kindly offered to co-ordinate the menu selections and collect money and we will be in touch as soon as we have agreed the venue. Enjoy February.

Editors Notes:

Hi everyone, I am getting the impression from talking to members that everyone seems to be busy doing essential, and ongoing maintenance work on their cars ready for the new season. We decided, to be safe, and thought it may be prudent, to have the cam belt changed on our MG, so after the chap having it for the best part of a week, we went to pick it up only to be told that, he was really sorry but he had managed to bust the zip on the hood! Therefore, we now have another job to look into and sort, a bit frustrating to say the least. Also, I hear Robin’s head gasket has gone! Lots of members seem to be having a few hiccups, and it’s always good to hear about them, as other members may have very useful tips to impart. There is a huge font of knowledge out there.

With that in mind thanks to Mike for more tales of his outings, adventures and mishaps. If anyone has any ‘tales of woe’ and ultimately, what happened next, please send them to me and I can include them in the Newsletter maybe in the ‘Technical Corner’ section, as they are always useful and interesting to other members. As always this time of year, this Newsletter is a bit ‘thin’, so thank you to Fiona on the updates of the New Forest Run and information on the Website. Thanks, as always, to Robin for his very informative Notes and I wish him and Karen well, firstly with the head gasket issue, and secondly, I hope they have a fabulous and relaxing time in South Africa this month, visiting the Southern Classic Car Show whilst they are there. Hopefully, see you all soon.

Karen

Entries are beginning to flood in; we have 48 entries which is up on this time last year and we have sold 63 Cream Teas. There are entries from near and far however, when an envelope hit my door mat with ‘By air mail – Par avion’ together with a $2.95 Australian postage stamp, I really did think we had found our furthest travelled. Alas, it seems that the owner of an MG Midget from Surrey chose to send his entry whilst aboard!

There are no updates on the Website this month – however, I am still looking for suitable photos for the banner and also don’t forget you can send in a photo of your car for the ‘Members Cars’ area of the photo gallery. Always open to ideas for new pages.

Bank Holiday Outing for the TA.

Glorious weather this morning so decided to go for a pint. A mile up the road and the radiator temperature was already very high and climbing. Decided to breakdown outside John and Linda’s house and take a look at the water levels. No sign of water!! Topped up with a large sample of the contents of John’s water butt. Everything back to normal. No sign of a leak. Where did the water go? More later on in the year as part of the story “Overheated TA Recovered by the AA” (other rescue services are available) Mike

Pub & Restaurant in the heart of Lyndhurst at the New Forest

The Swan Inn is situated just outside of Lyndhurst town which is considered to be the centre of

the forest

The grounds of The Swan Inn have been used as an inn since c.1731. Originally the buildings on

this site were used as a stables and coach house back in the day of horse drawn traffic. Old

photographs show that the site was also used as a crowded courtyard for pony sales in the same

area up until the earlier 1900’s until they were moved to a different site. The interior décor inside

the pub captures the history of the forest and different cultures and events that have happened

over the centuries in this idyllic part of Hampshire.

The Swan Inn was originally called the Swan Alehouse, then The White Swan and changed to

The Swan Inn in the 1980’s. It is now a family run pub & restaurant with friendly staff and a

great place for a meal, somewhere to take the family, relax and enjoy our beer garden & pub.

Mid monthly meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month and are held at a different pub

within the Southampton & New Forest Area. There is no format, just an evening to catch up with

other members, perhaps enjoy a meal together and chat.

Details of the different venues can be found on the 1009 Web Site Calendar.
