Southern Africa Territory Official Minute Title: Married, divorced or Engaged Candidates and Cadets Date: 2014/02/10 Keywords: Marriage, divorce, engagement, candidates, cadets. Replaces: 1996/05/07 General information Description: The Salvation Army recognises that husbands and wives need equal training and, therefore, need to participate fully in all classes and practical training. Purpose: This minute will give direction to Corps Officers and Divisional Commanders regarding candidates and cadets who are married, divorced or engaged before or during the candidate process or whilst a cadet in the training college. Applicability: This minute applies to all prospective candidates, candidates and cadets in college throughout the Territory. Compliance Definitions Policy A. Married Candidates and Cadets A1. Conditions for entering CFOT for married couples are as follows:- A1.2 Both applicants need to be suitable for the CFOT who carry the endorsement of their divisional Commander, Divisional Youth Officer and Divisional Candidates Board. A1.3 Married applicants should be married at least one year prior to entering the CFOT. A1.4 In order that both spouses may benefit from all training, no Candidate will be allowed to enter CFOT whilst pregnant at the time of entry into training. A1.5 No candidate will be accepted for training where a child is under six months of age at the date of entry into the Training College. A1.6 Where pregnancy occurs during the first three months of training the couple will be required to leave the Training College and return with the next session of Cadets. A1.7 Should a pregnancy occur after the first three months of training the couple may be assigned an out training appointment. Should no appointment be made the couple will be required to leave the Training College and may return during the next session of cadets one month earlier than the stage at which they left the Training College.

A1.8 Naturally a pregnancy affects both the husband and wife and the provisions of this minute apply equally to both parties.

B. Engaged Candidates & Cadets

B1.1 Applicants are advised to inform their respective leaders of any relationships formed that may lead to engagement, and seek their support and guidance at every stage. B1.2 The breaking of an engagement should be communicated by both parties to their respective leaders.

C. Divorced applicants C.1 Applicants who have been divorced should not enter the CFOT until at least one year has elapsed since the divorce has been finalised. All documents pertaining to the divorce settlement and agreements must be included in the applicant’s case files. The implications of the divorce agreement must be understood by the applicant and The Salvation Army. C.2 In the case of applicants who have been divorced more than once, permission for acceptance for training has to be obtained from the Chief of Staff Office at IHQ. C.3 In the case of applicants who do not have custody of their biological children yet are required to make maintenance payments for the said child. A detailed budget will need to be submitted that includes amounts payable and their ability to meet those costs whilst training at the CFOT. Links: IHQ minute on Divorced Candidates.
