Southern New Jersey is the key to the economic future of the Garden State. We are eight very different counties standing together, representing 3,700 square miles of opportunity, 27% of the state's population and more than 75,000 businesses. And we’re growing!

Since 1951, community and business leaders have powered the Southern New Jersey Development Council — an organization designed to bring economic prosperity to South Jersey through effective lobbying efforts, business-to-business relationship building and effective communication channels.

LobbyingThe members of the SNJDC believe in “smart economic growth” using our valuable land, infrastructure, sensitive environment and fiscal resources wisely through a cooperative effort and open dialogue with Trenton and Washington D.C. We've also had unparalleled success in building relationships with federal, state, county and local governments, and in cultivating cooperation with New Jersey’s Executive Branch and State Legislature.

PublicationsThe SNJDC offers a series of critical communication services to provide members with an “up-to-the-minute” picture of South Jersey’s economic growth.

The Chronicle is a 16-page, quarterly magazine covering the topics of business, upcoming events, and advocacy updates with a readership of 5,000 that includes top business executives, key policy decision makers and contributing members of the community. Our digital communications programs include the Afternoon Break, a three times each week service that delivers breaking news stories from around the region to our members. Around the Council is a pictorial recap of SNJDC’s events and committee meetings. In The Spotlight is a monthly “advertorial” featuring our members. The Legislative Dispatch provides our members with a synopsis of vital legislation and issues that affect the South Jersey region. And the RFP Rundown, a members-only service lists Requests for Proposals from state, county and local governments and authorities.

EventsWell known for highly informative and popular programs, SNJDC members and non-members alike look forward to “Sound Off for South Jersey,” the largest legislative conference in the region. For more than 30 years, the February event draws the top leaders from businesses throughout the state and local, state and federal government leaders.

The annual “Day on the Delaware” gives SNJDC members a relaxed atmosphere to meet regional business leaders and political figures while enjoying a summertime cruise aboard the Spirit of Philadelphia.

A new favorite among SNJDC members are the Public Policy Breakfast meetings. Scheduled quarterly, members meet with US Congress Representatives, state legislators and key state policy makers to speak about the issues that impact South Jersey.

At the SNJDC, the issues have evolved, the leadership has changed, and the membership has grown to more than 300 organizations, but the mission remains the same—bringing the public and private sectors together to promote the responsible economic development of the region.

Sincerely,

Marlene Z. Asselta, PresidentSouthern New Jersey Development Council

As the second largest employer in NJ, (only the State of NJ employs more people), the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst plays host to 42,000 people living or working on the base and is the foundation for 65,000 indirect jobs. Overall, the base has a $7.1 billion impact on the state, making it a critical part of New Jersey's economy. The proud men and women fighting to stave off the base closing/realignment are making progress. At a House Appropriations Military Construction Subcommittee hearing, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), ADM Vern Clark, praised the New Jersey Joint Cooperation on Installation Management at McGuire, Dix, and Lakehurst.

The Glassboro-Camden Line (GCL) corridor traverses Gloucester and Camden counties including the communities of Glassboro, Pitman, Sewell, Mantua Twp., Deptford Twp. Wenonah, Woodbury Heights, Woodbury, Westville, Brooklawn, Gloucester City, and Camden. The proposed line would restore passenger service along an existing rail line using vehicles similar to the NJ TRANSIT River LINE to improve transit service, mobility and links between the established communities and activity centers.

The South Jersey Port Corporation (SJPC) consists of terminals in Camden and Salem and the soon to be opened Paulsboro Marine Terminal. With direct access to the major interstate highways that can reach 100 million consumers within 24 hours, and 75% of the populations of the US and Canada within 48 hours, the terminals are key to the development of southern New Jersey. The 42-mile rail freight line from Port Salem, through Swedesboro, Paulsboro, Camden and to Delair bridge, connecting it to the national rail network, will be upgraded. A new two-mile connection to the new docks under construction in the Paulsboro Marine Terminal will be built. The $18.5 million upgrade project translates into 1,700 construction jobs and thousands of long term jobs in the future, giving the SJPC terminals an enhanced capability to the North America rail network and markets for its customers.

PSE&G Energy Strong As Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene showed, there is an enormous need to make the utility infrastructure weather resilient. PSE&G is investing $3.9 billion over 10 years to make New Jersey’s electric and gas distribution system better able to withstand severe weather. Its proposal would put 5,800 people to work protecting more than 40 utility installations from storm surges, strengthening distribution lines, making the electric grid smarter and thereby easier to restore customers, and modernizing the gas distribution system.

Kennedy ExpansionPenn Radiation Oncology at Kennedy recently celebrated its expansion, which includes the new vault and installation of a TrueBeam™ linear accelerator for precise treatment of cancer. Additional improvements to the Penn Radiation Oncology Department at Kennedy include a new, expanded patient waiting area; an additional patient exam room; and an expanded, private dosimetry area for technologists.

Compressed Natural Gas Filling Stations In March 2012, South Jersey Gas opened its first compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station in Glassboro, kicking off a major corporate initiative. Now, with two stations open and a third one on the way, the South Jersey Gas CNG filling stations are clearly a success with 56 percent of the volume of gas used by non-SJG fleet. This provides a clear signal on the viability of CNG as an economical alternative to gasoline and diesel fuel.
