Day 1, 2 & 3 – Kigelia Camp – Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is by area the second largest national park in Tanzania being 10,300 sq kms (3980 sq miles) of protected area where nature has the priority. Its location due west of Dar es Salaam in southern central Tanzania 128kms (80 miles) from Iringa means that it is well off the main tourist routes and consequently does not enjoy the large visitor numbers of the northern parks. This is indeed a benefit for those intrepid travellers who choose to safari there as they can enjoy the feeling of ‘total wilderness’ whilst enjoying the spectacular game and bird species which abounds.

Day 1, 2 & 3 – Kigelia Camp – Ruaha National Park

Set in a secluded grove of Kigelia Africana or ‘Sausage’ trees, high on the banks of a sand river in Ruaha National Park, Kigelia is an exclusive and totally secluded camp. Scenically stunning with a backdrop of a Baobab forest, rocky hills and the Great Ruaha River this camp places a very light ‘footprint’ in what is a very special wildlife profuse area. Each of the six tents has comfortable locally crafted beds, its own en-suite bathroom with flushing toilet and open air shower, a truly authentic safari experience. Days are spent, accompanied by highly experienced guides, exploring this gem of a National Park rarely visited by mainstream tourists.

Day 4,5,6 & 7 – Beho Beho – Selous Game Reserve

The Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania is simply one of the largest game reserves in the world having 55,000 sq kms (21,100 sq miles) of protected land where permanent human habitation is not allowed. Named after Frederick Courteney Selous the big game hunter and early conservationist who was killed, and is buried close to Beho Beho, whilst fighting in the First World War, the reserve as been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Drained by three mighty African rivers, the Rufiji, Kilombera and Great Ruaha as they flow to the Indian Ocean the reserve has a greater concentration of hippo, crocodile, elephant, buffalo and wild dog than any other park. The diversity of habitats from rivers and lakes to forests, plains and savannah create what most recognise as the very best game viewing in safari Africa.

Day 4,5,6 & 7 – Beho Beho – Selous Game Reserve

Considered by many to be one of the finest camps in East Africa, Beho Beho, located not on the banks of the Rufiji river but in the cooler hills overlooking the flood plains, has its own particular style. More like staying with friends in their glamorous safari home than staying in a camp – the individual guest cottages or ‘bandas’ are stone built and palm leaf thatched and spacious in the extreme with open fronts looking out over stunning scenery and wildlife. The main camp a haven of comfort provides a sophisticated but homely backdrop for après safari hospitality –with its ‘billiards room’ cocktail bar, study and various sitting and dining areas. Guiding at Beho Beho has been recognised by all as ‘simply the best’ whether by vehicle, by boat on nearby lake Tagalala, or on foot – walking safaris are the highlight of a stay at Beho Beho.

Day 8,9,10 & 11 - Kilindi - Zanzibar

The Zanzibar archipelago consists of a number of islands just off the mainland African coast, the largest of which ‘Unguja’ is usually referred to as ‘Zanzibar’. Zanzibar joined with the mainland country of Tanganyika in 1964 to form the Joint Republic of Tanzania (theTan from Tanganyika and the Zan from Zanzibar) and shares a number of government departments, but retains its own President. Theisland is 85kms (53 miles) long by 30kms (19 miles)wide and is ringed by beautiful white coral beaches and coral reefs, the capital Stone Town is a fascinating Afro Arab mix with a rich and romantic history. Often called a ‘spice island’ because of the wide variety of spices grown there, it was once the world’s largest producer of cloves, which grow in profusion and perfume the air as the clove buds dry in the hot equatorial sunshine.

Day 8,9,10 & 11 - Kilindi - Zanzibar

Kilindi is like nothing you have seen before, fifteen private ‘pavilion-style’ villas, exclusively located amongst Casurina trees overlooking a vast swathe of tropical beach with the Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon - many have likened it to paradise! Days at Kilindi follow the sun and it will not be long before you slip into the natural rhythm of waking at sunrise, resting in the heat of the day and marvelling at the wonderful sunsets. There is lots to do at Kilindi, but who has the enthusiasm for ‘doing’ things when you are staying in paradise? For the energetic there are a variety of water sports, diving, snorkelling and deep sea fishing, for the adventurous there are excursions to fascinating Stone Town, the Jozani Forest and spice plantations and the less actively inclined there is the ‘uShwari Spa’ and a shady sun bed. But above all think ‘romance’ and reconnecting to nature and the ‘elements’.

Day 12 – The Oyster Bay – Dar es Salaam

Without doubt the ‘chicest’ hotel in town this charming boutique hotel has eight ocean facing suites and is the ideal place to spend the last night of this safari. Like staying with friends in their luxurious contemporary style home the open and friendly hospitality shines through the entire stay, despite the fact that it may be just dinner, overnight and an early breakfast before leaving for the airport. There is a delightful lap pool set in the contemporary green and white tropical garden, wifi in the rooms as well as plasma screen TVs and a personal computer in the study but one of the key features of The Oyster Bay is the cuisine and its renowned hosted dinner parties.

Day 1 – Ruaha National Park – Kigelia Camp Depart Dar es Salaam by scheduled light aircraft flight to Ruaha National Park. The flight takes approximately two hours and passes due west from the coast over the Uluguru Mountain Range and the unpopulated hinterland of Southern Tanzania to land at Msembe airstrip where a Kigelia camp driver guide and safari cruiser is waiting. The transfer to camp, with game viewing en route takes approximately one hour. Kigelia is a small jewel of a camp, discreetly located on a dry river tributary of the Mwagusi River in one of the most game profuse areas of the park. Its six tents, positioned amongst large indigenous Kigelia Africana or Sausage Trees, which provide much welcome shade in the heat of the day, are complete with hand crafted furniture, en-suite bathrooms with flush loos and bucket showers, and spectacular views over the park. This is a true safari camp, remote, far from civilisation and surrounded by nature at its very best. Settle into camp, enjoy lunch, a short siesta and then the safari begins with an afternoon drive out into the park returning to camp at dusk for sundowners and dinner under the stars or around the camp fire. Lunch, dinner, and overnight at Kigelia Camp Day 2 – Ruaha National Park – Kigelia Camp Ruaha National Park is the second largest of the national parks in Tanzania but not one of the most frequently visited. It does not enjoy the familiar status of The Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, but all who visit agree that this is a ’gem’ of a park, with stunning scenery, majestic baobab trees, and the Great Ruaha River home to one of the highest concentrations of hippo and crocodile and a magnet for animals in the dry season. Morning and afternoon game activities by vehicle and on foot. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Kigelia Camp.

Day 3 – Ruaha National Park – Kigelia Camp Game viewing from the park roads is invariably spectacular, especially ‘cats’ (lion, leopard and cheetah), a huge variety of antelopes including Sable and Roan, gazelle and both lesser and greater kudu. But it is also the birds of Ruaha that are equally spectacular with 450 species, one cannot fail to become entranced by them. Morning and afternoon game activities by vehicle and on foot. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Kigelia Camp Day 4 – Selous Game Reserve – Beho Beho A last early morning activity in the park before breakfast and drive to the air strip for the one hour light aircraft flight to the Selous Game Reserve arriving at the private airstrip of Beho Beho shortly before lunch time. Beho Beho, owned by the Bailey family for almost forty years, is considered by them to be their home in the bush and whilst they spend very little time there each year it still reflects their taste for comfort and is very much a private home to be loved and enjoyed. There is a family of hosts, guides and staff to look after you and to help you explore this wonderfully unspoilt part of natural Africa. Beho Beho has eight ‘bandas’ – stone built and palm thatched guest cottages, spacious in the extreme with comfortable lounge furniture, day bed, game viewing verandah, dressing room and bathroom with open air shower. The only complaint we ever get is that guests do not have enough time to enjoy staying in these ‘bandas’ Lunch, dinner and overnight at Beho Beho.

Day 5 – Selous Game Reserve – Beho Beho Days at Beho Beho start early for this is the best time to see the tremendous array of both big and small game that inhabits this area of the Selous. The camp was the first site to be established in the Selous and consequently was placed in one of the game rich areas of the reserve, where there is a diversity of habitats, plains, riverine forests, savannah, lakes and scrub bush all contributing to make what is recognised as some of the best game viewing in the reserve. Game activities are taken in open sided and shaded game driving vehicles, in boats on nearby Lake Tagalala, and on foot - walking safaris are a speciality of Beho Beho, safely guarded and guided by the qualified and vastly experienced walking guides – some of the best in East Africa. Morning activities usually finish in time to return to the camp for an early lunch, with sufficient time for a swim in the pool and a siesta before the afternoon activity. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Beho Beho Day 6 – Selous Game Reserve – Beho Beho The visit to Lake Tagalala is an unforgettable day – starting early to game drive down to the lake, maybe stopping for a little pre-breakfast snack before boarding the game viewing boat with its swivel seats and convenient sun shade to meander around the shores with binoculars and cameras at the ready. It is said that Lake Tagalala has the highest concentration of crocodiles in Africa, you will be in no doubt that there are a lot, also huge pods of hippos bobbing up for breath and sinking silently under the water. They are far from silent when they feel that their private space is being invaded and their loud calls echo across the lake – this could only be Africa! Appetites honed by the fresh air will be satisfied with an ‘alfresco breakfast’ before visiting the Hot Springs for a refreshing and it is said rejuvenating dip in the mineral rich waters before returning to camp in the early afternoon. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Beho Beho

Day 7 – Selous Game Reserve – Beho Beho Walking, either in the early morning or late afternoon is one of the main specialities of the camp and can be done on any day during the stay. Accompanied and guarded by one of the Beho Beho guiding team - always keen and eager to share their enthusiasm and knowledge. Usually leaving from the camp on foot – walks take about two hours – morning ones sometimes longer depending on the game situation. Afternoon walks stop for a sundowner set up in the bush before driving back to camp before the 7pm reserve curfew. Meals at the camp are a moveable feast and guests enjoy different venues for lunch and dinner throughout their stay – whether on the ‘parade ground’ under the stars, in the Eagle’s Nest, poolside and sometimes in the bush. All meals are held ‘en famille’ with guests and guides recounting the day’s adventures. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, overnight and breakfast at Beho Beho Day 8 – Zanzibar – Kilindi There is time for one final early morning game activity or a relaxing breakfast in camp before leaving by scheduled light aircraft to Zanzibar (via Dar es Salaam) taking approximately one hour – depending on the scheduled stops and Dar connection. Zanzibar is part of the ‘Joint Republic of Tanzania’ so there is no immigration formality and you will be met by the Kilindi driver at the airport for the 45 minute transfer to Kilindi on the north west of the main island of Zanzibar. Fascinating and exotic Zanzibar the spice island off the African mainland coast, where the tropical breezes are scented with cloves, the tropical fruits are unique to the islands and lunch comes straight out of the ocean. Kilindi a relatively new addition to the Zanzibar hospitality scene is stunning and surprising, the architecture being the perfect interpretation of your imagination – could anything be better for this beach side setting than domed white pavilion-style villas – totally private – with not one but two plunge pools, huge spacious areas for sleeping and relaxing and a view ‘to die for’. Lunch dinner and overnight at Kilindi

Day 9 – Zanzibar – Kilindi This is the relaxing part of the holiday – no more getting up early to go out into the bush – no more snatched siestas – the pace has slowed to ‘stop’ and you are free to indulge yourself and enjoy a few days of just being in paradise. Of course paradise means different things to different people – but Kilindi’s speciality is ‘doing nothing’ – or a sun lounger with a good book – a gentle stroll along the beach, perhaps a visit to the spa for a massage or beauty treatment – or just taking in the stunning view of the Indian Ocean recharging the batteries. The fifteen private villas of Kilindi are well spaced out along the hillside, placed amongst the indigenous vegetation as if it was intended that they should be there. Each villa a perfect private space – who could possibly want to wander out of the cocoon of heavenliness – even meals can be delivered! Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Kilindi Day 10 – Zanzibar – Kilindi For those not inclined to simply just do nothing Kilindi does in fact provide a number of options from water sports, diving, snorkelling and fishing, to half day and full day excursions to the fascinating Stone Town (capital of Zanzibar) for retail therapy, museum and market visits, Spice garden tours to see cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg amongst many others growing naturally, even a dolphins tour and for those still inclined Jozani Forest to see the indigenous red Colobus monkeys – or perhaps a sunset dhow cruise. Its all there – all you need is the enthusiasm. Breakfast, lunch dinner and overnight at Kilindi

Itinerary in fullDay 11 – Zanzibar – Kilindi Tropical fruits, freshly caught fish and locally grown vegetables, coconuts and spices form the basis of the Kilindi cuisine – but the chefs are also creative and provide a rich and varied selection to tempt those ‘recharged’ taste buds. The bar, complete with its ‘water wall’ is a perfect place to enjoy drinks before dinner and show off the sun tan and the upper lounge a chic statement of casual design. Days at Kilindi drift by, one could imagine staying here forever, surrounded by tropical splendour, but life goes on and it is interesting to see how the islanders cope with living here in paradise. Visit the beach to see how the local fishermen earn a living, bargain for a few curios, splash in the ocean – or do some serious swimming in the 25 metre long infinity pool. All too soon the holiday is drawing to a close. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Kilindi Day 12 – Dar es Salaam – The Oyster Bay After a relaxing breakfast it is time to head for the airport in Stone Town to catch the short (15 minutes) scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam to be met by the driver for the transfer through the city to the ocean coast of the residential and ambassadorial area of Oyster Bay and the chicest hotel in town – The Oyster Bay. With just eight ocean facing suites The Oyster Bay is more than just a boutique hotel – in fact more like staying with friends in their private house. The contemporary interiors are stunning and provide a fabulous back drop for this last afternoon and evening of the holiday. Lunch on the verandah can be followed by some souvenir shopping in the nearby Oyster Bay shopping centre, or there is a lap pool and sundeck for those who need to top up their sun tan –before a memorable hosted dinner to celebrate a fantastic holiday in Southern Tanzania and Zanzibar. Lunch, dinner overnight and breakfast at The Oyster Bay Day 13 – Departure After breakfast in the hotel transfer to Dar International Airport for home bound flight.
