Design Introduction

• Design Intention: Through its unique position at the southern apex of Southmere Lake, offers remarkable and dramatic views over the water to the users of the library from within. In terms of building, it’s open, transparent, and light as well as welcoming. Therefore, the library is seen as a glazed crystalline building and through the double glazing facades to get more natural lights and reduce the use of energy.

Wall Details of 2nd Floor

To determine the R-Value of the general steel stud walls we utilized the Opaque modeling program that factors in material type, thickness and adds the combined R-value. Between the main steel structural members are these walls, composed of gypsum wall board, 6” steel studs, rigid insulation board, and exterior stucco that mimics a limestone or reconstituted stone.

Light Energy Usage

The energy needed to produce the interior lighting is about 20.330 KW per day.

The total square footage needed from PV panels to produce the needed energy is 5,736sq.ft. The availability of roof space on the second floor can provide 5,005 sq.ft. of solar panels which can supply about 87% of the needed energy to light the interior spaces.

Wall Details of 1st Floor Shear Wall The corten panel façade that is attached on the first floor shear walls of the building rusts over time as it is constantly exposed to the elements. This attribute is what causes the panels to gain their orange, rusted appearance. A side effect to this design decision is that water will inherently cause rust to run off of the panels to the ground.

This section diagram shows how this runoff will be dealt with. A below-grade drainage pipe system will divert all corten panel runoff to nearby cattail pond. Because direct runoff from the corten to the lake would pollute the body of water, the cattail pond will serve as a biological filtration system. This way, pollution is avoided and the iron from the rust runoff is recycled as nutrients for plantlife.Sh

Cistern

Water Calculation/Usage

Based on rooftop area, monthly rainwater catchment comes in at a volume of 43.55 cubic m per month.

The 8 dual-flush toilets located in the building will each use about 4.5 L per flush. When factoring in about 10 hours of use per day, across a spectrum of 30 days, these toilets will use anywhere from 30,000 to 40,000 L per month.

This translates to a volume of 30 – 40 cubic m, which can easily be compensated by monthly rainwater catchment by the roof. In order to do this, a cistern will be installed below grade that can hold 45 cubic m of water at a time. At a size of about 4.5m x 4.5m x 2m the cistern will fit perfectly under the eastern core of the building, juxtaposed with the rest of the building systems for convenient access.

CONCLUSION:During the project this semester, we’ve focused on how to improve the original design and how to make the design more realistic. The content of improvement focused on the structure, site, water, enclosure, as well as performance. Through these improvements to make this project into a sustainable building, we’ve reached our final goal in using more natural strategies that reduce the use of energy and save more natural resources.
