transit. Cyclists will fi nd bike lanes and

paths make it easier to get around,

but most residents still drive to work

and for errands. Close proximity to

the QEW (via three interchanges),

the Red Valley Parkway, Highway 8,

and Highway 20 make it an excellent

choice for commuters.

Anne Marshall has lived in New York City, Glasgow (Scotland), Greensboro (NC), Toronto, and somehow ended up back in the fabulous small city of Guelph, where she grew up. She loves nothing more than exploring new

charming initially, then later on turn

into a nightmare. Do your homework

and avoid such situations.

Have a rental application form

that’s appropriate for your province. It

will cover all the bases. Discuss how

they feel about overnight visitors,

smoking, pets, sharing household

chores, etc. Asking why they left their

last place and how long they lived

there is important.

The application form will have

a spot for references. Ask for

references from their current

employer, a previous landlord and at

least one previous roommate. Tell

them that you will call these people

to verify employment status and

their previous housing history. By

providing contact information for

these references, the prospective

roommate is giving you permission to

contact them. Check your province’s

privacy and human rights laws for

what you are allowed to ask and what

isn’t okay.

When calling an employer, state

that you are verifying the potential

roommate’s employment status and

character, not doing an employment

check for another job. When calling

a previous landlord, fi nd out how

long the person lived there, whether

they paid their rent on time or if there

were any other pertinent issues, and

why they left. If this information

doesn’t match what the person told

you, you may need to clarify.

Previous roommates can be

revealing. Ask how long they have

known the person and how long they

lived together. Then ask “What did

you like about living with __?” and

“What didn’t you like about living with

and elbow grease, your home can

shed the winter grime and sparkle for

sunny days ahead.

1. Spring cleaning tip #1: Simplify your cleaning products

Limit spring cleaning products to a

quality window/glass cleaner, all-

purpose cleaner, tile/grout cleaner

and a toilet bowl cleaner.

2. Spring cleaning tip #2: The Molly Maid system

Clean each room from the top

to the bottom starting on the left

and moving right. This really is the

quickest and most e  cient way to

thoroughly spring clean your home.

3. Spring cleaning tip #3: Dust fi rst, vacuum second

Any bits of dust or dirt that fall to the

fl oor as you’re dusting will be picked

up by the vacuum cleaner.

4. Spring cleaning tip #4: Dust with a damp, clean microfi ber cloth

Hold the cloth by a corner and lightly

mist with clean water from a spray

bottle. The cloth should be just damp

enough to pick up dust without

leaving moisture streaks on the

furniture surface.

5. Spring cleaning tip #5: Pet hair

Remove it from upholstery with a

damp microfi bre cloth or rubber

glove.

6. Spring cleaning tip #6: Damp mop

First sweep or vacuum fl oors to

collect crumbs and dirt. Then start

washing the fl oor in the farthest

corner of the room and work your

way towards the door. Use a damp

cloth on the end of a mop handle

to reach the narrow space between

appliances.

7. Spring cleaning tip #7: Microwave spatters

Fill a cup with water and microwave

on high for a few minutes. The steam

will loosen any baked on food so you

can easily wipe it clean. Before wiping

the microwave, remember to be extra

careful when removing the cup of

water as it will be hot.

8. Spring cleaning tip #8: Dish cloths and sponges

These are germ incubators, if you

don’t clean them you’re just spreading

the bacteria around. Wash dish cloths

regularly, and microwave damp

sponges on high for several minutes

to kill bacteria. Even better, toss

the sponge and stick to microfi bre

cloths, which dry quickly when hung

up and help prevent the spread of

germs.

9. Spring cleaning tip #9: The toothbrush

Use a toothbrush for hard-to-reach

areas in the bathroom and kitchen

(for example, around the soap

holder, taps and drain).

10. Spring cleaning tip #10: Streaks on the balcony door

Streaks are tricky to eliminate. When

spring cleaning, wipe the interior

side of the glass horizontally and

the exterior side vertically. This way,

it will be easy to determine if the

streaks are on the inside or outside.
