In 2013, Accora Village used six per cent less energy than it did in 2010, representing enough energy to power over 85 single-family homes for a year. The energy and water saved since 2010 also represents a three per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions – equivalent to removing 42 passenger cars from the road for a year. Similarly, in 2013, Accora Village used six per cent less water than it did in 2010; this is a savings of 10 Olympic sized swimming pools of water.

Energy audits and enhanced metering have helped Accora Village collect data and analyze utility consumption to identify energy-savings opportunities. Buildings are being retrofitted with energy efficient windows and lighting, and new building automation systems are allowing for better resource consumption management. Water-saving faucets, shower heads and toilets are being installed, as are rainwater collection systems for grounds irrigation, ensuring that Accora Village maintains its lush, green environment while using significantly less potable water.

“In addition, waste audits have led to the installation of two Earth Bins as a pilot project, which has been so successful that the program is being expanded,” notes Stephen. “Waste diversion through efficient waste management, recycling and resident education, like all our other green initiatives, is proving a big hit among residents. Everyone is excited about being a part of this ecofriendly community.”

Accora Village makes it a priority to engage the community and get involved in the community, and this month is all about Green Living. On Earth Day, April 22nd, residents will receive a package with seeds to plant around the grounds. With the seeds, there will also be a list of ways that residents can help cut back on their carbon footprints. Examples of these initiatives include turning off lights when not in a room, unplugging appliances and recycling.

On April 25th, residents will be encouraged to participate in “Clean-up the Capital” alongside the rest of the city. Spring cleaning is all about cleaning the little things we ignore or forget on a daily bases. Think about dusting off light fixtures, blinds and all of those hard to reach places. Just remember safety first and don’t fall off any chairs or ladders.

DO CLEAN OUT YOUR FRIDGE // DON’T TASTE UNDISTINGUISHABLE SUBSTANCES IN SAID FRIDGE

Who knows what lays at the back of your fridge and just because you’re cleaning it out doesn’t mean you have to find out either.

Avoid food poisoning by checking the expiry date on any sauces, pre-packaged meats and anything else you thought was a good idea to buy but never eat (fancy named cheese, exotic fruit, etc). The rule of thumb is if you don’t know what the product is or how you’re suppose to eat it or cook it - throw it out!

DO PURGE ANY UNNECESSARY ITEMS // DON’T PURGE YOUR ROOMMATES UNNECESSARY ITEMS

The change of season is the perfect time to clean out your closet, junk drawers and anything else in your home that doesn’t fit, doesn’t work or is just plain ugly. A word of caution: purging unnecessary items is highly exhilarating, but throwing out your roommates ugly painting or onesie only seems like a good idea. Be mindful or their belongings.

DO WASH YOUR PILLOWS AND CURTAINS // DON’T FORGET TO READ THE LABEL

You probably know whether or not your bed sheets can go in the washer machine, but what about your curtains and pillows? It’s definitely time to give these items a wash, but make sure you read the label properly to avoid ruining them.

SHOPPING FOR RENTAL ACCOMMODATIONS CAN BE FRUSTRATING. How can you know whether a landlord/property manager is strongly committed to being environmentally friendly and working with their residents to create Greener apartment communities and lowering their environmental operating footprint.Since 2008, the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) has encouraged apartment seekers to look for buildings displaying the Certified Rental Building Program (CRBP) designation. That’s when we implemented the CRBP “quality-assurance” program to help people identify well-maintained and professionally-managed residences they can call home. To further our commitment, we have added a new program component called Living Green Together - sustainability standards that embrace the best interests of both tenants and the environment.

FRPO recently published a report called “Apartment Living is Green” to point out that apartment buildings are Greener than single-family homes in a number of ways, and that renters are Greener than family-home owners.

For example, apartments use 65 per cent less energy per household, 40 per cent less water per capita, 60 per cent less waste and lie within a 10-km shorter commute distance to work. Renters use 50 per cent less energy per household, have an 8.4-km shorter commute each day, are 43 per cent less likely to use a car, 150 per cent more likely to take transit and 175 per cent more likely to walk.

Just by choosing to rent in a multi-residential apartment building, you contribute toward a smaller environmental footprint. Now, apartment shoppers can take that responsible practice to the next level by seeking out buildings that display the CRBP and Living Green Together logos. Renting in an apartment complex where you know the landlord and management are environmentally-friendly expands on your already conscious decision.

In addition to your efforts to use less energy, waste less water and walk, bicycle or take public transit rather than firing up a gas-powered vehicle, you can be sure that a Living Green Together-trained management team is doing its part behind the scenes. As you conserve water, so should your landlord. As you reduce waste, reuse and recycle, so should your property management team.

When you rent in a Living Green Together-certified building, you have peace of mind knowing that everyone involved in the running of the residence is on the same page when it comes to the environment. Your Living Green Together team (an Environmental Operations Committee of staff members) will also encourage tenant cooperation, and will respond in a timely, efficient way to any issues that arise with your participation. For example, if you discover any faucet or pipe leaking water let your property management team know so the problem can be addressed quickly.

In a Living Green Together building, you can also be assured that the purchase of products and services for the residence are being done with the environment and resident’s health in mind, and that energy performance monitoring is in effect to identify areas that need improvement. Management in these buildings are reducing, reusing and recycling wherever possible. In other words, they are walking the talk when it comes to environmental responsibility.

That’s when we implemented the CRBP “quality-assurance” program to help people identify well-maintained and professionally-managed residences they can call home. To further our commitment, we have added a new program component called Living Green Together - sustainability standards that embrace the best interests of both tenants and the environment.

FRPO recently published a report called “Apartment Living is Green” to point out that apartment buildings are Greener than single-family homes in a number of ways, and that renters are Greener than family-home owners.

For example, apartments use 65 per cent less energy per household, 40 per cent less water per capita, 60 per cent less waste and lie within a 10-km shorter commute distance to work. Renters use 50 per cent less energy per household, have an 8.4-km shorter commute each day, are 43 per cent less likely to use a car, 150 per cent more likely to take transit and 175 per cent more likely to walk.

Just by choosing to rent in a multi-residential apartment building, you contribute toward a smaller environmental footprint. Now, apartment shoppers can take that responsible practice to the next level by seeking out buildings that display the CRBP and Living Green Together logos. Renting in an apartment complex where you know the landlord and management are environmentally-friendly expands on your already conscious decision.

In addition to your efforts to use less energy, waste less water and walk, bicycle or take public transit rather than firing up a gas-powered vehicle, you can be sure that a Living Green Together-trained management team is doing its part behind the scenes. As you conserve water, so should your landlord. As you reduce waste, reuse and recycle, so should your property management team.

When you rent in a Living Green Together-certified building, you have peace of mind knowing that everyone involved in the running of the residence is on the same page when it comes to the environment. Your Living Green Together team (an Environmental Operations Committee of staff members) will also encourage tenant cooperation, and will respond in a timely, efficient way to any issues that arise with your participation. For example, if you discover any faucet or pipe leaking water let your property management team know so the problem can be addressed quickly.

In a Living Green Together building, you can also be assured that the purchase of products and services for the residence are being done with the environment and resident’s health in mind, and that energy performance monitoring is in effect to identify areas that need improvement. Management in these buildings are reducing, reusing and recycling wherever possible. In other words, they are walking the talk when it comes to environmental responsibility.

THE GLEBE IS ONE OF OTTAWA’S oldest suburbs, and it is, by far, still regarded as the place to live in Ottawa. The Glebe is bordered by the Rideau Canal to the south and the east, it runs as far as Dow’s Lake, and finishes at Highway 417.The Glebe is Ottawa’s ‘it’ place. From trendy hair salons, to unique clothing stores, people want to shop here, but most can’t afford to live here. Most residents drive to their offices, but many also bike, walk or hop on the bus. It’s one of the only places in Ottawa where suburbia meets the trendy hipster lifestyle. From one corner to the next the atmosphere changes. From the busy and scenic Rideau Canal to the hustle and bustle of Bank Street, the Glebe literally has everything you could need.

This event attracts thousands to the area each May.
