CATHOLICATE DAY36th day of the Great Lent is earmarked to be celebrated as the ‘Catholicate Day’. Programmes pertaining to the celebrations vary from Parish to Parish, but normally include Catholicate Flag hoisting, recitation of Catholicate Anthem, processions and meetings as well as pledging of loyalty and allegiance to the Church and its Supreme Head, the Catholicose of the East. Moreover, each earning member is required to donate his/her one day’s earnings to the church. Present day celebrations took shape in 1950’s during the reign of H.H. Baselios Geevarghese II. The word Catholicose is derived from 2 Greek words – Kath Holikos – which means ‘General Primate’. H.H. Baselios Mar Thoma Paulose II adorns the throne of the Catholicate of the East today, becoming the 8th Catholicose of Malankara and the 91stApostolic successor of St. Thomas who implanted the church in Malankara in AD 52.

Till Vas Co De Gama put his foot on the soil of Kerala in 1498, the Malankara Church flourished as one under one leader. There were no divisions or denominations. Ecclesial support was received from Persian church also believed to have been founded by St Thomas. Temporal powers were vested in a native ‘Jathleeq’- a prominent and powerful position. (Although the position of Jathleeq prevailed in Persia as well, the post came to be known as Archdeacon in Malankara lateron). Within 100 years of their arrival, the Portughese were able to bring the Malankara church under their control having allegiance to the Pope of Rome. The Synod of Diamper held in 1599 took decisions in this regard and set ablaze all historical books and records. After 54 years, with the historic bloodless revolt of Koonen Cross in 1653, the church broke the bondage and consecrated Archdeacon as bishop ‘Mar Thoma I’. In order to get recognition, many middle eastern churches were approached and Church of Antioch stretched a helping hand. Mar Abdul Jalil Gregorios came to Malankara in 1665. Thus, for the first time in history, Malankaracame in direct contact with the Antiochean Church. Rest is history.

In 1912, the Catholicate of Persia which had been extinct by then was revived and established in Malankara by Patriarch Mar Abdul Messiah. After installation of Catholicate, the Patriarch declared that the Catholicose was the successor in line to the throne of St Thomas that existed in Persia (The Seleucian Catholicate had emerged in AD 261 much before the existence of all known Patriachates). It was also mentioned that the Catholicose would have all the powers of a Patriarch. Today, Catholicate is one of the pillars on which the church exists exhibiting its antiquity, apostolicity, autonomy and autocephaly.

Let’s praise the Lord for all the blessings and pray for the church, all priests and dignitaries especially our Valiya Bava H.H. Baselios Mar Thoma Didymos I and our Supreme Head, the reigning Catholicose of all the East, H.H. Baselios Mar Thomas Paulose II Bava Thirumeni.

We are greatly pleased to roll out yet another platform for the parishioners, in the form of new parish bulletin. It serves to keep us clinging to the good Lord and offer Him praises while getting connected to the daily activities of the Church. Weconsider it a great blessing that the first issue of the revamped bulletin is gettingpublished during the Holy Lent.

The events that we hear every day around the world are quite alarming. There is reason for the non faithful to feel that life is becoming insecure and unsafe. It is even pathetic that the victims of the wicked acts by robbers, kidnappers, rapists and terrorists are innocent people who met with the disasters during the course of their daily routine life. However, we have no reason to be panic. We have to continue to trust in Him. St Paul gives us a very valuable advice in Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose”. Let us meditate on this particular aspect during the Holy Lent.

We are deeply grateful to the Supreme Head of the Church, H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma II, Catholicose of the East and Malankara Metropolitan for having given us a Bull of Blessing (Kalpana). Although we have space constraints, kindly inform us of your views and suggestions. Hoping that we could imbibe the spirit of the Holy Lent,
