beginning of September when the battalion reached the Seine River. The 1st Battalion was rushed into the Belgian Ardennes at the end of December 1944 during bitterly cold weather to help stem the German attack in what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. On March 24, 1945 at 1000 hours, the battalion parachuted across the Rhine River into German territory to attack from behind German troops who were resisting the Allied troops crossing the Rhine. At Elbe, after fighting their way across Germany, the battalion crossed the Elbe River passing many surrendering German soldiers. The battalion raced on to reach the town of Wismar on the Baltic Sea on May 2, 1945, three hours ahead of the Russian army.On May 31, 1945, the battalion was posted to Canada in preparation to engage the Japanese in the Far East, but with Japan’s

surrender, the unit was disbanded. In September 2000, Clark and the rest of the surviving members of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion were honoured in Alberta, where the four peaks of the Ex Coelis Mountain were named after the four above-mentioned battle areas — the first time this has been done in Canada, added Clark.Clark is still an active man, devoting many volunteer hours to the Mission branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.Ethel Beckingham, who enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954, is also an outstanding

community builder. Beckingham served as a fighter control officer and communications operator in Quebec, Ontario and Vancouver.Working with the legion, she organizes the essay and poster

contest in Mission schools every year, teaching children about the importance of Remembrance Day.For more information about the Mission legion, visit www.rcl57.org or its Facebook page.

Albert (Knobby) Clark will be a part of the local Remembrance Day ceremonies again this year.

The Mission Record Thursday, October 31, 2013 17

Seniors Living 55 Plus has now successfully been published for six months and many of you may be wondering why and how it came to be.On Nov. 19, 2012, a group of seniors’ organizations met to discuss a better way to communicate with the seniors of Mission and they approached The Record to include a monthly seniors section in the newspaper. The original idea was to have a two page section to connect seniors in the community and to provide options to keep aging adults active. This project has now grown to an eight-page pull out because of the need for such a publication aimed at our growing seniors population. The inaugural edition was published on April 25, 2013 and since then has been included in The Record on the last Thursday of the month and distributed to all Mission homes. Additional copies are circulated to various seniors’ groups and locations around the community. The group meets monthly with Crystal Orchison and Carol Aun from The Record to review the current edition and make plans for future publications. Other

members involved in this project are Gordon Dainard, the facilitator; Ian Graham and Diana Muntigl from Lifetime Learning Centre Society; Felice Clements from Mission Community Services Society; Bryan Fawcett from Mission Seniors Advisory Committee; Bob Ingram and Jean Price from Mission Seniors Centre Association; George Evens from Elder Citizens Action Coalition; and Sophie Zehner and Darlene Bruntlet from Old Age Pensioners Organization.Seniors Living 55 Plus is made possible with the support of the Mission Record and local businesses with their advertising. We acknowledge and thank them for their contribution to this success. If you have events, articles or photos of Mission citizens aged 55-plus living healthy lives through artistic, mental, physical, social and spiritual activities, you can contact Gordon Dainard by e-mail at [email protected] to discuss inclusion in future editions. For advertising opportunities, call Crystal Orchison at 604-851-4444.

Members who put together the Mission Seniors Living 55 Plus feature are (clock-wise from back left): Darlene, Jean, Felice, Sophie, George, Carol, Gordon, Crystal, Diana, Ian and Bob. Missing from the photo is Bryan.

Did you know that close to one in four Canadians wear either complete upper and lower dentures or partials? So what is the best way to keep our dentures clean? Denture cleaning is an integral part to keep your dentures looking and feeling great. If you don’t clean your dentures properly, your smile won’t be as attractive and you may experience bad breath and stained dentures. Dental plaque that adheres to your prosthesis creates biofilm, which is a perfect breeding ground for some very scary bacteria such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus

aureus), or drug-resistant staphylococcus aureus bacteria. If this layer of biofilm is not removed on a regular basis, bacteria may be inhaled into your lungs and cause hard to treat lung infections. Plaque on dentures may also calcify and turn into calculus, commonly known as tartar, which needs to be removed by a dental professional. When considering all these potential health risks, daily cleaning of partial or full dentures becomes a very worthwhile and essential task. Many dentures wearers are not sure if they should brush their false teeth during the day or soak them in denture cleaner overnight.

This is my recommendation:• Brush your dentures after every meal to remove biofilm and food particles. Use a moistened denture brush and liquid hand soap or Polident Fresh Cleanse. Do not use regular tooth paste as it will wear away the denture acrylic. • Soak your dentures daily using a professional denture cleaner such as Nu-Dent or Renew to remove plaque deposits and other stains such a coffee, teach and smoke. • Don’t soak your dentures in bleach or other household cleaners as this will damage the acrylic.• An ultrasonic cleaner is the best way to keep your dentures clean. Dentures

are placed in a denture cleaning solution and the ultrasonic action creates tiny air bubbles that lift off stains. Patients who use one regularly comment that their dentures have never felt cleaner. • Remember to rinse dentures thoroughly after soaking to remove traces of the denture cleanser. How it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numer-ic clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle. Look for the solution in next month’s puzzle section of Living 55 Plus.

Dental Implants gave us a confi dent smile

This couple have something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of con dence when it came to smiling and talking.

Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which areas close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”

“Whether you have a single tooth, several teeth or everyone of them missing...we can help.”
