Many scorn at social media, afraid of confidentiality breaches and view it as a ‘useless waste of time’. Yet, nursing is witnessing a huge rise in the number of cli- nicians, researchers, scholars and teachers making innovative use of this technology to improve patient outcomes, enhance teaching and learn- ing experiences and increase dissemination of research findings. Social media offer many platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube through which professionals can engage and exchange ideas with others across the globe. Twitter chats, for example those hosted through #wenurses and #hcsmanz weekly chats are a fabulous example of this. Forums such as this have the potential to increase scholarly com- munication and collaboration. There are ever increasing innovative uses of social media in nursing and Collegian is proud to offer this special edition to share experiences and explore the potential of social media in advancing the profession, and enhancing outcomes for patients and their families. We are soliciting for papers with a specific focus on social media in nursing. Reviews, original research and exemplary case stud- ies are welcome. We welcome all papers with a strong focus on the use of social media in nursing practice; teaching and learning, policy and research, public health and community engagement. We hope that this issue will generate discussion amongst the nursing community and help dispel some of the myths and concepts that social media is something to be afraid of in nursing and highlight some of the great work that is happening in this emerging space. Submissions of any of the above topics and related issues are welcome. Please include the title and abstract of your paper, all the author’s names, affiliations and emails. Please feel free to contact the guest editors in advance for advice on potential suitability of any proposed manuscripts.
