THE VIEW FROM THEPRESIDENT'S DESK

Sportsman: onewlw exhibits quali-ties especially esteemed in those whoengage in sports, as fairness, courtesy, good temper; one who can lose withoutcomplaint or }vin without gloating—Webster's Encyclopedia of EnglishLanguage

While perusing Lhe wealth ofbooks in an aU-equeslrian bookstoreduring Lhe recent Rolex Three Day Event in Lexington, Ken-tucky; two books caughlmy eye. Judges Speak Out and JudgesSpeak Out, Pan II. I was almost afraid to pick them up, '1 cereisn't an equestrian organization that I've been involved withthat hasn't considered its judges "up for grabs" when it comesto the evaluation and subsequent placement of their animals orchildren in competition.

Both volumes contained tips on how to improve one'sperformance in Lhe show ring. What might be more valuablewould be tips on bow to improve one's performance outside theshow ring. It would be refreshing to hear what a lovely day ithad bccn.,how much die children had enjoyed themselves, howso-and-so's new horse seems to be taking to vaulting quitenicely and other such pleasantries after our events. Instead, It isLhe "judges aremiles apart AGAIN," "so-and-so didn'tdeserveto win," "that judge doesn't like me" and on and on and on.

Complaining is contagious. One complaint leads to an-other—and another—and another.

The good news is thathappinessis contagious too. Can younot smile back at someone who smiles at you? I love the US.Pony Club's motto; "A Happy Child on aliappy Horse". Forme itsays it all. I'd like to leave you with, one more quote—from the AHSA Rule book:

The Sportsman's CharterThat sport is something done for the fun of doing it and that

il ceases to be sport when Ubecomes a business only, somethingdone for what there is in it; That amateurism is something of theheart and spirit—not a matter of exact technical qualifications;

That good manners of sport are fundamentally important; That the code must be strictly upheld; That the whole struclureof sport is not only preserved from

Lhe absurdity of undue importance, but is justified by a kind ofromance which animates it, and by die positive virtues ofcourage, patience, good temper and unselfishness which aredemanded by (lie code;

That the exploitation of sport for profit alone kills the spiritand retains only Lhe husk and semblance of the thing;

That Lhe qualities of frankness, courage, and sinceritywhich mark Lhe good sportsman in private life shall mark thediscussions of his interests at a show.

Most sincerely,

Mountain Springs Vaulters could not claimtitle to any of its accomplishments if not for thegenerosity, willingness and compassion given to usby oneof themostbeautiful creatures on this earth! Her name is Beautiful Belle. She is a I6.3h Shire/Quarter cross, now in her 6th year as our club'smain vaulting horse.

Belle was reluctant at first to accept vaulting, but soon came to love the attention and camarade-rie of this sport. As her confidence and skill grew,

Geronimo

Beautiful Belle

she became a desired mount for our own club membersand scores of vaulters in Region 1, She helped three ofour Region's highest ranked vaulters earn their SilverMedals and carried the Sou them California Dream Teamto a second place finish at the '95 Nationals. BeautifulBelle is by far the best and favorite horse we have everhad!

Mountain Springs now has another horse to bragabout. Geronimo or Jerry for short is a purebredPercheron, approximately 15 years old, 15.3h and atleast 3 feet wide. He is on loan from a very supportivefamily who just wanted his life to be full of die love andattention that this sport can provide. A former Amishcarthorse and farm worker, he loves children and oftenfollows the vaulters around like a puppy. Our moreadvanced vaullers are helping to train him for the newvaulters who will follow.

Beginning in 1997 we will seesome important changes in our sport.Among these changes is the additionof a "Horse Score." This core will beadded to allsections of all AHS A eventsexcept Team Kiir, where the GeneralImpression score will be revised andwill place a greater emphasis on thehorse portion of the score.

To assist us all in understandingwhat judges will be looking for in thevaulting horse, the subjectof this year'sAVA Annual Judges Forum will beentirely about the Horse. This Forumwill be held on September 14 and 15,1996 at Osierlea, San Juan Bautista,California. All judges, instructors, longeurs, foreign guests, vaulters overtheage of 16, andother interested adultAVA members are welcome to attend. The Directors for the Annual JudgesForm are J. Ashton Moore andAdrienne Stang, both FEI "O" Judges.

I hope to see as many of you aspossible at this event.

AVA Judges Training SessionSuzanne Detol (FEIC),Chair AVA Technical Committee

Osierlea, Sao Juan Bautista, Californiawas the site of our second judges trainingsession for the year. J. Ashton Moore andElizabeth Searle generously donated the fa-cilities to the AVA for this five-hour sessionon May 25, 1996. Present were: J. AshtonMoore (FEI O), Adricnne Stang (FEI O),Suzanne Detol (FEI C), Deborah Harrison,DVM (FEI C), Joyce Gussenhoven (R), andLynne Owen (r). Thejudges discussed clari-fication of various procedures:

1. The new AHSA rule (Article 3705.6),"Before beginning the performance, the horsemustbe trotted on the circleatleastone round."What we want to see is: The team (or individu-als) run in, line up, salute the judge and then runto line up outside the vaulting circle. Thelongeurputs the horseouton the vaulting circleand trots him until the Chief Judge rings thebellto indicate it's ok to go on. The longeur maythen ask for a horse and/or vaulter warm-up,and that one-minute warm-up begins then.

2. Elimination:A) If a team or an individual vaulter is

eliminated for an infraction of the rules dur-ing the compulsory section, that team orindividu al(s) may compete in the-Kur sectionand receive awards and placings in the Kiirsection. However, they may not receiveoverall awards or placings.

B) Individuals who are eliminated inRound I of the compulsory or Kiir sectionmay participate in Round n, but may notreceive overall awards and/or placings.

C) In individual competition: In the eventthe horse is excused, if a vaulter is on thehorse at the time of dismissal, that vaulter iseliminated. Any number of vaultcrs who arein the arena waiting to perform on that horse, may be allowed to compete at a later lime, atthe discretion of Competition Managementand in accordance with the Rules.

3. Gold Medal Exam Format: The twojudges will sit separately during the exam, but will confer to calculate the average scoreafter the compulsories are completed. The

total average score from the two judges forthe compulsory exercises must be 80% withno exercise receiving less than a 75% aver-age. Any repeats of compulsory exercisesmust be done before the vaulter continues tothe Kur exercises. The eight Kiir exercisesmust receive a total average score of 80%with no exercise receiving less than a 75%average.

The remaining four hours of the brainingsession were spent watching, scoring andthen discussing video taped compulsory ex-ercises from the 1995 European Champion-ships and current U.S. vaulters. Thejudgesgave their scores and then reviewed the tapesin slow motion, pointing out what they werededucting and rewarding for in each exercise.

Sessions such as these arc invaluable asa learning and training experience. Eachjudge attending these sessions expends theirown Lime and money to participate. A specialthank you goes to Adriennc Slang, leader ofthese training sessions and to each judge fortheir dedication to the sport of vaulting. 0

Sports Medicine ClassFor the first tune members of the Vault-

ing Board and the District Chairmen wereinvited to a sports medicine class offeredby the State of Lower Saxony. The lecture, entitled "Sports Psychology - Indicationsand Practical Application," given by Dr.Schedlowski, encouraged collaborationamong sports psychologists, athletes andinstructors. Dr. Schedlowski presentedvarious stress theories and methods, unfor-tunately he didn't delve too deeply intohow to use these methods.

Situations such as competitions presenta stimulus and this stimulus can disrupt thebalanceof: 1) body physiology (pulse, heart-beat); 2) emotional state (anger, fear, joy, etc.); and3) cognitive state (thoughts, ideas). The consequences are: agitation, stress, failure. Increased stress, such as deathlyfear, in some situations can lead to in-creased capabilities and an activization ofotherwise inaccessible reserves. In com-petitions stress hinders rather than increasesperformance capabilities. What follows isthe relationship between performance andlevel of activation (excitement, strain -emotional outcomes from a special situa-tion such as tests, competitions).

An optimal performance can be foundbetween an adequate level of excitementand strain. The psychologist, and the in-structor who wishes to use these methods, can achieve this balance through:

• Mobilizing measures with "too low"levels of activization, for example, thevaulter not taking the competition seri-ously.

• Stabilizing measures with adequatelevels of activization, meaning the vaullerunderstands the importance of the eventand adjusts accordingly,

• Relaxing measures with inappropri-ate levels of activization, for example, thevaulter is too nervous, unable to concen-trate, forgets kiir exercises, makes rhythmmistakes, has stomach aches, sweats ex-cessively. Relaxing measures include men-tal training such as autogenous training.

These methods attempt to dismantle auto-matic negative reactions to special situa-tions such as competitions.

Automatic Reactions(the competition is a very fearful situation)

Awareness of this

Intellectual Understanding

New Reaction automatized

This training concept occurs in 3phases: Phase 1: Diagnosis: "What is theproblem in the stressful situation"; 2-3 ses-sions; Phase 2: Practice of the individual-ized training program, about 7 sessions;Phase 3: Follow-up: conversations, etc.

The training sessions ideally would beheld one-on-one. The goal of this trainingconcept is to dismantle the automatic nega-tive reactions to special situations and toreplace them with positive reactions. Aftertraining, the athletes should possess a "toolbox" of mental techniques from which topick and choose. The triangle of physical, emotional and mental states which canbecome unbalanced through special situa-tions can be brought back into balancethrough the influence of mental compo-nents and the thought and idea processes.

In summation, sports psychologicaladvice, from a psychologist or speciallytrained instructor, can help athletes achievea higher level of performance.

Do our judges promotethe misuse of horsesby longeurs?Janine Wolf, Hilgelstrafte I ,64342 Seehcim-J ugendhc'tm, Germany

My answer to that is a clear yes! Ac-cording to our current judging system, ahorsemust canter slowly, evenly and on theline. It doesn't matter if this means canter-ing on the forehand, if the head is pulled tothe outside and if the side reins are pulled

too tight. The longcur is only allowed tostand umnoving in the middle. In this waythe team gets a good score.

Have our good judges ever heard ofcollection? I think Uiat many haven't.These judges should observe a dressageperformance: when piafs and passages arebeing shown, the horse moves more slowlyit is true, but the poll is the highest point andthe hindquarters become more active.

So, what is collection and how do I getthere? Collection is the completion of thescale of training. That means thai beforethis point is reached, other training levelsmust have already been achieved. Unfor-tunately I have established thatmost horseswhich meet the desired qualifications byjudges have no impulsion. They move onthe forehand, are not on the bit becausethey are leaning on the side reins, and theirhindquarters move to the side.

As a instructor of longeurs it pains meto observe how our judges support this.Just to name one example: Horse A re-ceives die score of 3.5 [remember this is inGermany]. It demonstrates rhythm, relax-ation, impulsion, is on the bit and is movingon the circle. What is missing? Collection, meaning itdidn'tcaiiter slow enough. HorseB receives the score of 7.0. It cantersslowly, however it is completely unimpor-tant that this horse has not even begun thescale of training. This horse has side reinswhich are too tight, the nose is pullingtowards the ground, the hindquarters werenot collected under the body, and whatabout impulsion! Not even bringing upmoving on the circle!

"For whom are these scores?"

If one was to speak to the longeurabout this, one would probably get Uiis or asimilar answer:

"What do you expect? My horse goesgood enough somy vaulters can vault on it,and I get good scores from the judges!"How should I respond to this? For me thequestion is: "For whom are these scores?"Every good rider gets the chills when hesees pictures of uncollected horses withthree vaulters on its back. And we wonderabout the bad reputation we have in how weuse our horses!

As far as I know, the horse score existsto encourage improvement of how we trainour horses, but perhaps I have been incor-rectly informed. We should think about

Dateline Germany Vaulting in Englandhow we can instruct our judges in how tospot a correctly trained horse. What takesplace atj udging clinics? Discussions aboutcompulsories and level of difficulty. Whatkind of qualifications must a judge have?He must have earned the silver medal orbeen an instructor.

Does this mean he has the necessaryknowledge of the horse? Most vaultingjudges come from the vaulting arena, andnot from riding, and therefore have toolittle knowledge about our main partner inthis sport whom we mustprotect, the horse.

My suggestion is to draw judges fromthose who have been certified vaultinginstructors or those who have passed thesilver riding medal as well as a vaultingmedal. What is asked in the vaulting andriding medal tests? Do they contain asection on the scale of training? With thevaulting ins true tor testthere are some ques-tions on this topic, and for the silver ridingmedal I had to ride an L dressage lest andreceive at least a 6.5. I know what collec-tion means, as J had to show it under thesaddle. 1 am prepared to work on a refor-mulation of the rules.

KCir Music WorkshopStefan Kra\vczyk, liorse choreographer

Mr. Krawczyk demonstrated how it ispossible to put together good music with abasic system (CD player and cassetteplayer). He explained that at the beginningand end of a recording one should alwaysuse the Pause and never the Stop button.Disturbing cut-off sounds between indi-vidual musical pieces can be avoided byusing the volume knob to lower the volumeat the end of one piece. In addition, afterfinishing one piece, manually rewind thecassette a quarter turn before you beginrecording the next piece.

If you have access to a player, you canadjust the tempo of the music. Using ametronome to measure beat of the horse, you to match it to the music's tempo. Thebeat of toe canter, the tempo of the musicand the movement of the vaulter(s) shouldmatch, creating a harmonious picture. 0

featured Anne GroBler, a physical thera-pist. She demonstrated how some move-ments can damage the spine and pointedout that two of the compulsory exercisesfall in this category! The flag, due to theraised, forward-looking head and archedback, has the potential to cause damage. This risk can be eliminated by lookingdown at the surcingle instead of straightahead, although this wouldn't look as nice. The riding scat also has the potential tocause eventual damage due to the often-observed arched back and the forward-looking head.

Anne discussed the classifications offlexibility: normal, hypermobile andhypomobile, and what advantages and dis-advantages this has for vaulters. For ex-ample, the hypermobile vaulter has littleproblem with exercises such as the flag andmill due to extreme flexibility. Thehypomobile vaulter is not able lo demon-strate an "up to the nose" mill, but due toher stability she has an advantage withflightandsupportingexercises. With train-ing, vaulters can become more balanced.

For the GoldIndividual Overall the listing should have been: 1. Krystal Solorzano, Nu Balance 8.206, 2.Darcie Purcell, Central Valley 8.049. Also Whitney Hansen did not compote in the Trot Individualclasses but in the Beginning Canter classes where she was listed correctly. Apologies to all.

I have been vaulting for about 13 yearsand competed at the first United Kingdomteam competition in 1989, the first indi-vidual UK competition and with theGleneaglc's coach in Scotland. Sarah hasbeen vaulting (on and off) for about tenyears and does all the daring dismounts andthe more "wierdand wonderful" individualmoves. Jane has been with us for abouttwelve years and competed twice with theteams we sent to Holland. Gemma andLaura have been on the team for two yearsand are progressing as assets to the team.Jessica, our "star" vaulter at ten years oldhas been with us for four years. She seemsto enjoy being thrown around in the air andbent into the oddest of positions. Finally,nine-year-old Suzi has been vaulting forthree years. She has only done a couple ofdisplays butis becoming a favorite with theaudiences because she is so'small.

Our team leader/organizer, Penny com-peted in Germany in the 19SO's.Hermotherowns the riding establishment where wetrain and the horses are kept. We vault ontwo horses: Dylan, a Bay Welsh Cob, andMac, a lively skewbald. We often try outnew horses form the yard. Riding schoolhorses tend to be pretty sensible and don'tmind us running along side them or stand-ing up. If anyone in the UK wishes to seeus perform, we will be at the Derbyshire onthe 29th of June. We train every Saturdayat the Knabhall Equestrian Centre nearMatlock in Derbyshire and we offer les-sons to newcomers. E-mail me for moreinformation <[email protected]>. 0

EP Positive Horses in OlympicsConditional Waiver Proposed toAllow EP Positive Horses toCompete in '96 OlympicsAmerican Horse Council News, Vol.22, No.<5

The possibility that horses positive toEquine Piroplasmosis will be allowed toenter the US and compete in the 1996Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia be-came more likely on December 13,1995when the Georgia Department of Agricul-ture (GDA) and the US Department ofAgriculture (USDA) advised the Interna-tional Equestrian Federation (FEI) that alimited number of horses could be admit-ted under certain conditions.

Tneproposal from Tommy Irvin, Com-missioner of the GDAandDr. Lonnie KingAPHIS administrator for the USDA, in aletter to Mr. Bo Helander, Secretary Gen-eral of the FEI outlined the conditionsunder which a waiver could be granted andgave the FEI until January 5 to accept.

Presently, horses that test positive toEP are prohibited from entering the US byUSDA regulations and Georgia by GDAregulations. The American Horse Councilhas opposed any waiver and remains op-posed. This issue has caused a great deal ofconcern in the horse industry in general andGeorgia inparticular. At ihoughilhad twicedenied a waiver, at the request of FEI, in

June, the USDA agreed to re-consider itsposition regarding EP positive horses en-tering the US and Georgia for participationin the 1996 Olympic equestrian events. This requestfrom the FEI differed from thetwo previous by asking for a "conditional"waiver to allow the horses to enter under•specific conditions.

The letter lists twenty conditions lhathave to be agreed to by the FEI if a waiveris to be granted. Conditions included therequirement lhat EP positive horses to betransported directly from the import siationto the Georgia International Horse Park(GIHP) under quaranline.Nomovemenuoany other premises would be allowed.

The horses would be maintained in afenced, quarantined, isolation area at theGIHP. Movement from the quarantinedarea would be allowed only for warm upfollowed by the competition and/or veteri-nary emergencies. The horses would beunder24hoursurveiIIancebyGDAAJSDAofficials, would be restricted to vegetation-free areas at all times, would be examinedapproximately every eight hours for ticks, and would have a distinct, irremovableidentification at all times. Finally, theywould not be allowed to enter the GIHPmore than 21 days prior to their competi-tion and would be required to leave the

USA immediately following the competi-tion (within seven days).

An important condition to theapprovalof the waiver is the FEI's agreement thatthecostsofenforcingthewaiverwillnotbeabsorbed by either the Federal governmentor the state of Georgia As a condition ofacceptance, the FEI would have to actimmediately to enforce serious violationsof the quarantine including, if necessary, excusing a horse from further competition.

EP positive horses would receiveacredited treatments at stated intervals. TheGIHP facility would be required to imple-ment an effective rodent control programat me beginning of the tick suppressionprogram as atickpreventative measure andwould have to be fenced to preclude meentranceof tick infested animals, includingwildlife. In addition, the GIHP core facilitywould be monitored for die presence ofticks and EP infestation at the beginning ofthe tick suppression program and continuefor a period of time after the event.

Pets would be prohibited on the GIHPcore facility grounds during the Games thenumber of persons with access to the EPquarantine area would be limited and eachperson would sign a statement acknowl-edging their awareness and agreement tocomply with theEPrestrictions. Feed, bed-ding, and animal waste would also be moni-tored and controlled. 0

It's Vaulting! - On the InternetEric Je\vett <je\[email protected]>.

What's out there? First, there's theAVA home page hosted by the HorseNethttp://wwwJiorsenet.com/ava/index.htinl

Operating since the middle of February, this site introduces the AVA and the sportof vaulting to the casual visitor. It alsocontains "links" to other AVA pages whichprovide (at this time):

- A Brief History of Vaulting- A directory of AVA clubs- The current AVA Rules for Vaulting- Description of Vaulting Competition- Discussion of the Kur- Internat'l/Nat'l/Regional schedules- Competition Results-1995 Internal Competition record- Links to other equestrian Web sitesIn the three months since the Web site

went on line, we have included referencesback to the AVA in (at least) 18 other sites, including ones in Canada, Australia, andFinland. We have received inquiries fromseveral people interested in vaulting, notesfrom former vaulters, and inquiries frompeople in Brazil, Italy, and Australia. [As Iwas putting this issue together, I got myfirst "first time vaulter" who found methrough the Web - MR]

This is not going to be a static site, butis expected to grow and evolve as presentplans continue to develop, and we start toget feedback from you, the clubs and vault-ers. Planned expansions include pages on:

-Therapeutic Vaulting-The Friendship Team-The compulsories.-Other ideas are welcomed.

What is needed to use the AVA site?Access to the Internet from a com-

puter, and software called a "Web B rowser".The simplestmeans of getting home accessto the Internet is over telephone lines, by a(relatively fast) modem, to an Internet pro-

vider. Probably the most common isAmerica On Line (AOL), whose free soft-ware includesa Web browser. CompuServealso gives Web access through a down-loaded (and also free) copy of Mosaic.Netscape is quite popular, and is compat-ible with many dial-up providers.

Most colleges and universities haveInternet access for their students, andmanypublic libraries and public schools alsoprovide access. Inmost cases, these institu-tions have high-speed data lines which aremuch faster than the telephone line canprovide.

The Internet offers several ways tocommunicate. You can "e-mail". This is away to send and receive messages, similarto snail mail (post office), but electronic. Those who have access to a server gener-ally have an address. Usually it contains aportion of the person's name but not neces-sarily. Mine is <horse!23 @aol.com>. Parent VolunteersHelping Those Who AreWorking Hard to Put On YourRegionals and Our NationalChampionshipsVaulter-Parents Please Read!Carole Dwinell

As you are reading this, your coacheshave already received the registration in-formation for the National Championshipsand some of the Regional Championships. Many preliminary meetings of volunteersto advance plan these events and make sureall the required A V A and APIS A papers arecompleted in a timely fashion have alreadyhappened. Someone has input all the infor-mation, someone has taken it to the printer, someone has seen that the collating, sta-pling, bundling andmailmg has been done.

Thenthereare the T-shirts, thepatches, the logo, the program, ads for the program, ribbons, medals and trophies for the awards, the siteleasing, arranging for footing, hous-ing, stabling, medical staff, judges, and on

and on. Although this is a process thathappens for ever}' event, it takes on incred-ible proportions when it comes to the Na-tional Championships. In reading this ar-ticle, you know mat some people in thebackground, behind the scenes, have al-ready been busy for months. Why do theydo this? It is for the love of vaulting.

It will soon be your turn.

At your Regional Championships andat Nationals, all these preliminary effortscome together in three or more days oforganized insanity—or at least what seemslike insanity. To work smoothly and effi-ciently, there aremanyjobs thattheseeventvolunteers will be too busy to do. That iswhere your talent and skills come in.

There is a need for people who arefamiliar with computers, wbo have alreadyhad some experience with scoring, timing, music, gate keeping, ribbon sorting andmuch more. There are relatively low stress

jobs like running score sheets to the officeor out to the judges, raking and hospitalityto keep everyone informed and the staff fedand watered. Though these are not hightech jobs, their importance cannot be un-derstated. If the judges don't get the nextclass's score sheets, it don'thappen, folks!

Each club is required to provide work-ers for a certain number of hours per com-petitor. In addtion all clubs have beenassigned to areas of responsibility for theduration of the event. It is very importantthat your club be a part of this effort. Pleasetake a minute and volunteer to coordinatethe worker roster within your club. This isa job that any parent could do and save thesanity of your coach. Coaches are underenough pressure to make sure that every-thing concerning the horses and vaultersgoes smoothly.

Tboseof you with organizational skills, please join the ranks of the "behind thescenes bunch" andhelpgetyourown groupcoordinated for the big events ahead. 0

California AssemblyCalifornia Assembly Bill 851 passed

out of the State Assembly on January 25,1996 by a vote of 48-19. California is willon its way to joining 30 other states inlimiting equine liability. AB 851 proposesthat when a horse acts like a horse, and arider gets injured given that the horseownerwas not negligent, the rider should not beallowed to sue the owner. AB 851 simplyasks that when a person chooses to ride ahorse, he or she must recognize and assumethe normal risk associated with that choice.

This bill has far-reaching effects. Notonly will horse owners benefit, but thosewho board, or train horses, sponsor horseevents, or provide the f acilities where equineevents take place will get relief from theconstant threat of litigation. If they have

Bill 851 Updatenot already shout down or disallowed useof then1 facilities because of thehigh cost ofinsurance premiums, ranchers and farmerswill be more willing to allow the use oftheir property and trails if the fear of beingsued by a visitor is relieved.

California is the number one state na-tionwide in the horse industry, generatingmore than $2 billion annually from thediverse participants whose activities rangefrom trainers, stable owners, horse shows, feed and tack manufacturers retailers, wholesalers, veterinarians and other re-lated jobs. This figure probably does noteven touch on the racing industry. Limitedequine liability has proven to be a benefit tothe equine community in other states whohave already adopted similar measures. 0

Sharon Davis Recuperating in HospitalLong-time vaulting supporter Sharon Davis of Virginia is regaining her strength from a

battle with pneumonia. She is at the Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland.Sharon first learned about vaulting when she and her husband were stationed in Germany.

In the early '70's she lived next door to Garrod Farms in Saratoga, California. She took overthe new and struggling team and coached them to their first competition in Southern Californiaand beyond. Inevitably, her husband was transferred and she moved to the East Coast. Withher vaulting horse and dynamic personality, she developed Region IX. Carol Fuller and ChrisAppel-Bucierka were both lured into the sport by Sharon. She has served on the Board ofDirectors of the AVA and the American Horse Council.

You may send cards or notes to her at the hospital or to her daughter, Kathy Tieman at433 60 Wayside Circle, Ashbum, Virginia 22011. You may phone Sharon (she1 s re-e-e-e-alyfrustrated with inactivity) by contacting her daughter at 703/729-2695.

VolunteerProtection ActAmerican Horse Council News, Vol. 22,No.6

The purpose of Senate Bill S.1435(Senator Mitch McConnell/R-KY) is tocreate immunity from lawsuits for volun-teers of non-profit organizations who actwithin the scope of their responsibilitiesand who do not cause harm willfully andwantonly.

The bill protects volunteers from ex-pensive liability suits. According to Sena-tor McConnell, "volunteer sendee has be-come a high-risk venture. Our sue-happylegal culture has ensnared those selflessindividuals who help worthy organizationsand institutions through volunteer sendee."

This S enate bill differs from the Housebill (H.R.911 Representative John Porter/R-IL) in that the Senate bill develops fed-eral oversight for. volunteer protection, while the House bill calls on individualstates to develp their own volunteerprotec-tionlegislation. The House Judiciary Com-mittee is expected to consider thebill some-time this spring while the Senate has notdetermined a timetable for their bill.

MUSICTips for Taping MusicCourtesy Tambourine Vaultersl.Use good quality new tapes2.Make 3 copies of every piece of music youwish to use, 1 practice copy, 1 back-up copy, and 1 competition copy3 .Copy your music on both sides of the tape4.Have nothing but your music on your tape5 .Have one set of tapes per event such as: oneset for individual barrel Kiir and another setfor individual horse Kiir6.Have your tapes clearly marked on bothsides. Include club name, individual's name,class/division (such as "Beginning TrotCompulories"), song title (optional), andindicate if "run in" music.7 .Have your parent or another team membercarry your back-up copy to the arena as youenter. This way, if your music fails, you haveyour second copy close at hand to turn inwithin the one minute allowed.8. Using cassette cases, make up a case foreach arena each day. Put your tapes in orderof go and be sure to get them to the musicstation in time. Mark your club name onyour cases. There will be tape labels in the Order of Goessent to all participating clubs.

Since the Premier Horse Network will notbe "up and running" hi time to televiseour National Championships, there willbe no need for music to be cleared forroyalty information.

Special Short Tapes for SaleTired of trying to record your music on a onehour tape? Tired of paying for one hour oftape for 1-1/2 minulesof Kiirmusic? Prepaid orders of 1 to 24 tapes, pleaseadd $2.50 for shipping and handling. Add$3.50 for 25-49 tapes and $5 for 50 to 99tapes. No shipping/handling charges for 100tapes. FAMILY CHECK LIST FOR NATIONALS 1996Use this to plan your family participation at the AVA National Fest

1. Vaulter Participation• Coach & Vaulter will help you decide which classes are appropriate for your vaulter' s level.• Vaulters participating in more than one event may need to wash uniforms between "goes".

Hotels should have washing facilities available, however hand-washing is probably safer,• Vaulters must have clean uniforms and shoes for classes and ceremonies.• Carry spare hair supplies for fixing hair between "goes".

2. Family Participation• Support and encourage vaulters through participation in club activities.• Your Club Workers Coordinator will help you find out when your hours are needed.• Enjoy the welcome reception will be held before the AVA Board Meeting on Wednesday.• Non-vaulting siblings are invited to help out. Contact your Club Workers Coordinator.

3. Expenses• All applicable AHSA and AVAmember and entry fees must be paid prior to vaulter's entry

into the competition arena.• Every participating vaulter and longeur must pay a $60.00 registration fee.• Your coach or club manager will assist you in determining the correct fees for your classes.• This is a family event. Housing should be fun and comfortable for the entire family, but

should also allow for suitable rest for the vaulter.• Food is available at the Murieta Equine Complex. Two nice restaurants & grocery store

with a deli is nearby. Some accommodations will allow you to prepare your own meals.4. Entertainment

• Check your AAA Guide for local sights and activities. Sunset Magazine also has lots ofinformation about the Sacramento area.

• When yousee the preliminary Order of Go, youmay wish to plan some "off-site" activities.Be sure to check with your coach to be sure that you or your vaulters are not needed.

• Please do notplan any physically tiring activities (i.e.: river running, long hikes, long hoursat an amusementpark or waterpark, etc.) near the time yourvaulteris competing. Vaultingis athletically demanding and vaulters should conserve their strength for competition.

If you have any questions, ask your coach first See the list of names/phonenumbers on page 19 for more information. The Nationals '96 Management Teamwill be happy to help you with whatever you need.

EditorialThinking Positive - From the Horse's EyeCarole Dwinell

As vaulting athletes, coaches, parents, it is our joy to meetchallenges: a new routine, a particular sticky compulsory, ourvaulter overcoming a fear, or instilling good sportsmanship in ourchildren. But what about the horse? Does the horse look forwardto succeeding? To keeping a perfect circle? To overcoming a fearof cows, a Happing table skirt on the judge's stand or a red carparked to close to the competition arena?

It is said that the difference between humans and animals isthat animals don't know Ihey have a future. Horses live in thepresent. They are either hungry or not hungry, thirsty or notthirsty, hot, cold or just right. Their anticipation response comesfrom only one thing: Experience and memory of that experience.

Let's think about some of the things that horses could actuallylook forward to. I know horses who recognize their owners' cars. That joyful nicker certainly means something. It indicates that thehorse is anticipating something pleasurable.

Different on every horse, [here is a particular favorite spotthat feels so good to be rubbed or scratched that the horse can'thelp but stretch into Ihe pleasure of it There are favorite buddies, favorite shade areas, the primo manger. It goes on and on. If we areaware of these behaviors, we can use it to our advantage.

Our vaulting horses have a job to do. They are unaware of theimportance of a particular competition or a certain vaulter'sdesires. They either respond or react to the feelings and tempera-ment of the people and the situation around them. What they areaware of is "individuals." Why does a vauldnghorse go so well forvaulter "A" and is apig for vaulter "B"? Why do your three othervaulting horses hang over the fence watching ihc fourth horse dohis job? How does your star horse react when taken up to thecompetition arena away from equine buddies?

These are conditioned responses. Vaulter "A" is probablylight on (he horse and is tuned into (lie motion and the horse'spsychological needs and responses. Your three vaulting horsesprobably want their share of the undivided attention and treatswhich the other horse is getting. Ail that neighing is going onbetween the competition arena and the trailers because the horseis worried about being separated from stable mates.

Vaulter B may need to know that the horse has no clue abouther bad hair day, and only hears the anger in the voice and body, and reactsas if it is personal, because to tlie horse, itis. Allvaultersneed to leave their "attitudes" at me. gate and focus on theirpractice or performance and the mood and condition of the horse'sraind. Your three that are hanging over the fence need a pal and alittle treat too, just to recognize their interest and reward it. Theseparated horses need to be separaledmore often and then reunitedto lessen the stresses of separation.

Vaul ters can discover and develop ways to get a conditioned,"anticipation response" rather than just a reaction from theirhorses. Patience, patience and more patience as well a.s carefulobservation of each horse will lead to that ultimate desire tocooperate which brings the human and equine athletes closertogether.

Great Fallsfielded a dozen vaulters,Catoctin with nine, Topaz 4-Hbrought six and a NEW TEAM,Patuxant, coached by AmyOnufrock from Crofton, Mary-land, had six vaulters. At thisvery friendly competition, classes were offered in indi-vidual, double, triple and teamin Pre-Novice, Novice, Trot, B c-ginning Canter and AdvancedCanter divisions.

Bittenbring, when askedabout the large number of help-ful parents, commented that overthe years she has observed Lbatunlike some other competitivesports, "vaulting seems to bringout the best in parents and theycome forth with the talents thatare needed." She noted that thesame is true of the competitorsthemselves, who not only makelifelong friends on their teamsbut with other teams as well. 0

From the very beginning planning stages for our April 13 and14 Spring Fest at Stoevener Training Stable in Blacksburg, Vir-ginia, there were problems. We have always opened the RegionDCs competitive season. It's a challenge, planning to be fourweeks ahead of the Great Falls competition and scheduling so thatwe don't conflict with Easter celebrations. This year our dates alsoconflicted with the California schedule. That shouldn't mattermuch with our vaulters' schedules but it was a major concern whenit became clear that our first hurdle was finding a j udge, any j udge.Particularly when judges are sometimes also coaches attendingvarious regional competitions. Finally we were able to contract ajudge to be fisted in our fest packets. So the chain reaction hadstarted as our entries went out about ten days late. Then as all youcoaches know, getting commitments from vaulters to go to the festtakes time. At least one team made the decision not to attendbecause of the tight time frame.

Two weeks before our fest, our judge called with the news tbatfamily illness would make her unavailable. Nina Wiger(r) agreedto come on such a short notice. BLES S NINA! Again, time playedagainst us. We were unable to use a prepurchased airline ticket.Back on the home front, we were trying to keep our teamsinformed with postcard mailings about the changes that weretaking place. The word got out via some coaches that a "cancella-tion" was pending. This caused one team to cancel even thoughthey had sent in their entries. The fest was becoming financiallyhairy.

Thanks to mail mix-ups, two days before the fest, we had noscore sheets. After a call to the AVA Competitions Secretary anda hasty reorder, the score sheets were sent Fed Ex and did arriveon time— thanks to Carol Beutler.

The winter bas been exceedingly long and severe this year. Aweek before the fest the snow was still accumulating—as much asa foot in some areas. We had 76 inches over the season hiBlacksburg, where the norm is 21 inches. Teams legitimized theirnon-attendance because they were unable to work with theirhorses or that the final numbers of vaulters coming dwindled to thepoint of not being affordable.

As the numbers decreased, iron willed as I am, Kim Beiseckerand I decided that the fest would go on and the small attendancewould open up an opportunity to do a combination fest/clinicprovided that the judges were willing. They were. Besides the 13Mt. Tabor vaulters, we had five Falconwood vaulters, and onevaulter each from Catoctin Vaulting Club, Topaz Vaulters, GreatFalls Vaulting Club and Timberline Vaulters for a grand total of 22vaulters. I would be willing to bet that ours was the smallest AVARecognized Fest they had ever attended.

However... There is SUCCESS WITH SMALL NUMBERS!When in other Fes ts, vaulters are anxious about the start of the day,the judges, the horses, being on time, etc., etc., etc., we gatheredthe group and started the day with a half hour of pleasant conver-sation with the judges, Nina Wiger (horse) and Jamie Cooper(barrel). They shared information about changes in judging, andthe effects the changes would have. The vaulters were encouraged

to ask questions and make comments. This beginning seemed toset the tone of the whole day, creating a less stressful environmentso often felt "by the competitors. Our competition day ended about3:45 pm. Fest Management video taped all of the mounted classesand most of the barrel classes.

As the basis for another two hour session called a CRITIQUE,\vedistributedacompulsoryscoresheettoeachofthevaulterswhowanted immediate feed back about their scores. Every vaulter hadthe opportunity to see their performance and then get feedbackfrom the judges. Honami Dean, Timberline Gold Medalist, andrecent visiting coach to Falconwood Vaulters, played an activerole in discussion and clarification of the judge's comments. Manyvaulters went to the barrel for Nina to explain the changes neededfor a higher score. Nina and Jamie did a fabulous j ob of keeping thedelivery of the discussion in a positive mode. Awards for the daywere made following the Critique.

The Sunday morning schedule was short with three teamclasses followed by awards for the day. We ended our Fest byhaving Nina do a second clinic on Horses and Horse Handlers.Nina's reputation for being a super longeur and her teaching ofsuch skills preceded her coming. Four horses and their handlershad an opportunity to get further instruction. Patty Bittenbringmade special arrangements to bring Scandal, a thoroughbred.WayneBeisecker brought Chance, theirnew quarter horse. Two ofFalconwood horses, Ivan, a half draft and Waldorf, a warmblood, also took part in the clinic. Nina's instruction was really appreci-ated. The participants are scheming on how to have Nina returnsometime later this year to evaluate improvement and continuetheir instruction.

Statistics: Twenty two vaulters entered the ring a total of 52times. The highlight of the barrel classes was the costumedperformance of the "Jackson Five." Mt Tabor's Appaloosa, HighHat Andy, received the Horse of the Year nomination.

In looking back, there were several tunes when the festcommittee could have "thrown in the towel." Rather than that, wesurged forward, not to be denied our "Little Fest that could." Wedid what we said we would do, and are truly pleased to beresponsible for this entertaining and informative success!
