Chevron Phillips Chemicals International N.V. operates a plant located at Tessenderlo, Belgium. It produces a range of specialty organosulfur compounds, utilizing the sulfur chemicals technology. The plant has excellent road and rail connections and is close to the port of Antwerp. Here a warehouse for packaged products is ideally situated in the centre of the port area, with close proximity to facilities such as customs, rail, road and sea transport.

The Specialty Chemicals Division of Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC operates a plant in Borger, Texas, which also produces a range of specialty organosulfur chemicals, high purity hydrocarbons and solvents, performance and reference fuels, alkyl aromatics and mining chemicals. Specialty Chemicals Division markets the above and a wide and varied range of products arising from other Specialty Chemicals’ plants practising other types of Chevron Phillips’ technology.

Chevron Phillips Chemicals has many years experience supplying the refining industry with quality products for sulfiding hydrotreating catalysts and anti coking applications for steam crackers. Our range of products includes: Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS) and Polysulfides (TBPS 454, TNPS 537). Our technical specialists will be able to offer advice on the most suitable product for your needs. We can deliver product in returnable Portable Tanks or SmallPortable Tanks according to customer requirements. This equipment is specifically designed to ensure safe, odour free and controlled offloading of the sulfiding agent directly into your unit or storage tank. We have an exclusive partnership with ACTISULF who we have been working with for many years and together we are able to provide a complete service for sulfiding hydrotreating catalysts. ACTISULF has long term experience providing service using its experienced personnel and a range of equipment to meet industry requirements. Chevron Phillips Chemicals and ACTISULF work together at every stage of the operation to ensure a fully integrated supply and service package to meet customer’s needs. It starts with a comprehensive survey to ensure all parameters are considered and all safe handling and technical requirements are met. Next, we work together to ensure we optimise logistics and delivery methods. ACTISULF then work to ensure hassle free injection of product using the most suitable equipment and fittings before finally submitting a report on the sulfiding operation.

E-III® FIRE TRAINING FLUIDS

Chevron Phillips Chemical is pleased to offer three grades of E-III® Fire Training Fluid. E-III®. These are specially blended fluids that provide a safe and cost-effective way to train firefighters. They accurately simulate a typical aircraft, motor vehicle, or watercraft liquid petroleum fuel fire. The combustion emissions contain lower levels of pollutants than do the emissions from traditional fuels, and contain less than 10 ppm sulfur. Both E-III® Fire Training Fluids and their unburned residues are stable and non-corrosive. E-III® Aviation Grade Fire Training Fluids emits no detectable vapors until heated and complies with NFPA 30 Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. The use of these products can result in cleaner water after water surface burns, and pits and mock-ups may become cleaner as they burn off existing residuals. Because E-III® Fire Training Fluids will not mix with water, protective clothing that is wet will not absorb fuel, so the firefighter is afforded increased safety. When multiple training fires are planned, water is an acceptable extinguishing agent. The high flash point of E-III® Aviation Grade Fire Training Fluid means that it will not generate pockets of unstable, flammable gas during training operations. When compared to traditional fossil fuels, the use of E-III® Fire Training Fluids as training fuels can result in cost savings.

FUELS

We have a broad range of reference fuels and fluids, including primary and secondary standards for gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel. Our performance fuels meet many established industry and military specifications such as API, EPA, CARB, IP, ISO, DIN, ECE and other specifications. Test fluids that serve as reagents in ASTM, SAE and Milspec tests are also available. We are also able to manufacture products to meet strict specifications such as purity, sulfur, content, lead content, specific gravity, distillation and octane or cetane number using our custom blending facilities.

MINING CHEMICALS

Chevron Phillips Chemical Company has been supplying high performance chemicals to the mining industry for more than 60 years. The products include international recognized Orfom®, Molyflo® and Philflo® brands used for solvent extraction, flotation, mineral collection and depression. We also offer a number of other propriety products including flotation oils, frothers, depressants, sulfur-based collectors, solvent extraction diluents, and tannins. Orfom® and Molyflo® Flotation Oils. Chevron Phillips Chemical has experienced staff for developing solutions and delivering products worldwide to support the mining industry and are continually developing new products to provide solutions to difficult problems in the operation.

ForSField™

ForSField™ Protective Coatings are proprietary, high performance two component fast cure sulfur based epoxy coatings designed to provide superior protection to steel and concrete structures in corrosive environments. They comprise 100% solids so have zero VOCs; have excellent adhesion and flexibility plus exceptional resistance to aqueous acids, bases and abrasion. Self-priming topcoat, can be reapplied with minor surface preparation, even in damp conditions.

PA-18 - Polyanhydride Resins

PA-18 is a solid linear polyanhydride resin derived from 1-octadecene and maleic anhydride in a 1:1 molar ratio. The long hydrocarbon side chain provides hydrophobic character to an otherwise highly polar copolymer. This property makes PA-18 and its derivatives useful in the following applications: release agents and coatings, corrosion preventatives, water and paper treating chemicals and coatings, thickening agents, epoxy curing agents, chelants and surfactants, imparting lightfastness to basic dyestuffs, adhesives, dispersing agents, water proofer for personal care products, etc.

Skilled personnel provide customers with technical service regarding transfer, handling and sto-rage of sulfur chemicals. REACH REACH Regulation (1907/2006/EC) is the new chemical regulation in the European Union which entered into force on June 1, 2007. REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals and aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment by identifying the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. REACH places responsibility on industry, i.e. manufacturers and importers are responsible for evaluating and managing the risks presented by chemical substances and for providing users with safety information. Therefore, REACH requires that all chemicals substances that are manufactured or imported into the European Union (EU) in quantities greater than 1 MT/year are registered. The registration period is implemented in three official deadlines (2010, 2013 and 2018) established according to the volume and hazardous classification of the substances. Information on the REACH Regulation can be found on the ECHA website http://echa.europa.eu REACH Compliance Chevron Phillips Chemical is committed to meeting its obligations under REACH Regulation and is taking the necessary measures to continue its commercial interests in the European Union. In order to ensure compliance Chevron Phillips Chemicals and its Affiliates pre-registered in 2008 all substances manufactured and/or imported to the EU. Pre-registration allowed substances to remain in the EU market before they are registered according to the official deadlines. Only a legal entity in the EU can pre-register or register a substance under REACH, therefore, Chevron Phillips Chemicals International N.V., located in Belgium, is the legal entity appointed as Only Representative to all our entities located outside Europe. Chevron Phillips and its Affiliates have a portfolio of approximately 193 registrations that require to be submitted to the European Chemical Agency by their registration deadline. SUPPLIER RELIABILITY WORLDWIDE STORAGE LOCATIONS A wide range of storage vessels hold a variety of sulfur chemicals in Europe, the USA and Asia. This allows supply flexibility and a rapid, reliable response to customer orders. Storage tanks in mild and stainless steel up to 1,200 m³ are complete with sprinkler installations and inert gas blanketing. COMPREHENSIVE CUSTOMER DOCUMENT SERVICE A set of documents will accompany an order consisting of either technical documents such as Material Safety Data Sheet, Technical Data Sheet, Certificate of Analysis or commercial documents such as Packing List, Certificate of Origin, Invoices and Shipping or Customs Documents, etc. SHIPPING Via Chevron Phillips Chemical Company’s (CPChem) SAP system, orders are passed via our Business Services Department where specialists take care of all customer requirements as to conforming product, equipment, documentation and all other items necessary to secure a rapid reliable delivery. EXTERNAL WAREHOUSING A worldwide network of warehouses and storage facilities in Europe, the USA and the Far East ensures reliable customer supply of drummed and bulk product. Typically, such facilities are equipped with the most modern safety devices e.g. sprinkler installations, ionic smoke detectors, water retention capacity, clay mats and explosion-proof appliances in order to ensure the highest possible standard of storage. Near Antwerp, there is an isothermal warehouse for products stored in drums and IBC’s (Intermediate Bulk Containers). An integrated logistical concept is followed, catering to all customer requirements.

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION MERCAPTANS Stainless steel and copper free alloys are the preferred construction materials for use with mercaptans. Stainless steel should be used for any vessel or line which is frequently to be open and exposed to the air. Cast iron or carbon steel is not recommended, although it can be used if appropriate measures are taken to condition the iron or carbon steel equipment before utilization. Allow a small amount of mercaptan to stand in it for a period of time and then keep the equipment under a dry, inert atmosphere. With iron or carbon steel there is a possibility that iron-sulfur complexes may form. These are pyrophoric and constitute a potential danger because of the flammability of mercaptans. Do not use copper or copper-bearing alloys for mercaptan service. Mercaptans readily attack these metals and are contaminated by them. PUMPS It is recommended that only hermetically sealed pumps are used. A pump with a canned motor or a pump with a permanent magnet coupling is recommended. PIPINGS AND FITTINGS Seamless steel piping is recommended for transfer lines. Standard forged welded fittings and flanged construction are also recommended. Threaded fittings can be used provided they meet service rating requirements. A fluoroplastic tape sealant is advised. FLEXIBLE CONNECTIONS Use seamless stainless steel, close pitch, single braid with pipe nipples welded to each end, or fluoroplastic tube with neoprene, EDPM or chloroprene cover. RELIEF VALVES When safety relief valves are used they should have 304 or 316 stainless steel trim. TRANSFER VALVES Stainless steel ball valves with fluoroplastic seats and 316 stainless steel trim or their equivalent are recommended. COUPLINGS It is recommended that couplings used should be of a drybreak, self-sealing, quick-connect type. RIGID CONNECTIONS Welded or flanged joints should be used if possible. For flanged joints use forged steel, raised face, weld neck or slip-on flanges. GASKETS We recommend spiral wound graphite filled gaskets. Viton is preferred. DRUM STORAGE Drums should be stored in a cool, dry place with adequate ventilation. The storage area should be strictly ‘no smoking’ and fitted with an explosion-proof electrical installation. It is recommended to use non sparking tools. Precautions need to be continuously taken to prevent the escape of product vapour and liquid. If drums of product are partly used, the bungs should be kept tight and gaskets may have to be replaced periodically to prevent leakage. For more information about proper drum storage we refer to our website and to our Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) which can be found on: http://www.cpchem.com/bl/specchem/en-us/Pages/default.aspx SPILLAGE HANDLING A spill or leak of a mercaptan in particular results in an obnoxious odour. Larger spills must be covered immediately with an absorbing material such as expanded perlite for example, EKOPERL 66. After use, the absorbing material should be put into suitable open top drums that can be closed tightly afterwards for controlled disposal. Floor contamination should then be treated as small spills and must be immediately neutralized and the resulting residues disposed of. There are several agents available for this as well as proven methods for effectively handling the situation. An effective method is based on converting the spilled mercaptan to a relatively low odour disulphide, through chemical oxidation. This is done by spraying or flooding the spill area with a dilute bleach solution. Sodium hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide in dilute solution (2 to 5%) in water may be used. Never use concentrated bleach or dry bleaching powder or concentrated hydrogen peroxide on mercaptan spills because the heat of the reaction may cause ignition of the organic mercaptan. NON RETURNABLE PACKAGING The most important factor in drum disposal is to empty the drum as completely as possible. If even small amounts of liquid remain in the drum, disposal treatment may already become difficult. Residual traces of mercaptans in empty drums can be destroyed using a neutralizing agent as outlined above. Preferably this should be carried out in controlled conditions. It is recommended not to reuse the drums because of the difficulty of eliminating all traces of odour.

HANDLING AND STORAGE By their very nature sulfur chemicals have a strong characteristic odour and flammable vapours. They can have relatively high vapour pressures which increase rapidly with temperature. But properly handled, they can be safely and effectively confined. Although each use must be specifically studied, the following general information is included as an aid to the proper and safe handling of these products. Mobile tanks of mercaptans are unloaded by pressurizing the tank with inert gas and venting the customer’s tank. Before starting the unloading of the mobile tank, vapour pressure is reduced in the storage tank through burning the off-gases in an incinerator or venting to a scrubbing system. Alternatively, the product may be pumped from the transport tank to the customer’s storage tank, using a vapour return line to vent vapours into the transport tank. It is recommended to keep the storage vessel under a dry, inert atmosphere. A typical system is shown below. BULK UNLOADING

DRUM UNLOADING Drums of mercaptan may be unloaded with commercially available dip pipe assemblies. An inert gas should be used to force the product out of the dip pipe. Unloading pressure should not exceed drum specifications.

Dedicated product lines and pumps connect product tankfarm storage facilities with filling stations in order to guarantee product specification without contamination.
