Whenever a high profile motor racing series returns to a venue after time away, its always interesting to cast an eye over some of the changes that have occurred during the sabbatical.

In this instance, six years have passed since the V8 Supercars last ventured to the fast and flowing Pukekohe Raceway which, admittedly, is now a little less fast and a little less flowing thanks to the addition of a chicane in the back straight.

Looking at the grid itself, just 12 drivers that lined up for the 2007 Pukekohe meeting are still in the championship today. Thats a considerable turnover in a category where the age of drivers spans almost 30 years.

Just three of the 12, namely Mark Winterbottom, Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, remain with the teams that they last competed with at Pukekohe.

By comparison, 16 drivers who raced in the first Pukekohe V8 Supercars event in 2001 were still at it six years later. Five of those - Jason Bright, Craig Lowndes, Todd Kelly, Russell Ingall and Garth Tander have managed to chalk up 12 years not out.

Again just three - Mark Skaife, Steve Johnson and Paul Morris - managed to stay in the field from 2001 to 2007 without changing teams. Albeit all of them either owned those teams or enjoyed family links to those that did.

Six sponsors (ignoring the car makers) that filled the role of primary car backer in 2007 are represented in this years field, with the colours of Jack Daniels, IRWIN, Fujitsu, Supercheap Auto, BOC and Jeld-Wen still flying high.

Only Jeld-Wen has not enjoyed a consistent presence over that time, while

BOC and Brad Jones Racing deserve special mention for their commitment to one another.

Just four sponsors - Supercheap, Castrol, Caltex, Shell - stayed onboard in the period between 2001 and 2007, and the three oil companies are now long gone.

So what does it all mean? Probably not much, to be honest, other than the fact that we should all enjoy what weve got while we have it.

For in professional motor racing, nothing stands still for long.

  • Pride of PukekoheNew Kiwi stars take aim at a special victory trophy

as the 2012 season drew to a close, the immediate future for Kiwi participation in the V8 Supercars Championship looked rather bleak.

New Zealands biggest racing hero of the last two decades, Greg Murphy, was on the outer with Kelly Racing and staring down the barrel of his first season on the sidelines in 15 years. His exit from the team was confirmed in late November, and it became clear soon after that the Hastings native would not find a home elsewhere.

Shane van Gisbergen, meanwhile, had used November to extract himself from a new three-year deal with Stone Brothers Racing - a proud Kiwi team that had been purchased by Australian property tycoon Betty Klimenko - and was also heading for the sidelines.

That left the plight of the Kiwi in V8 Supercars down to just one man, Fabian

Coulthard, who for all his promise had been winless through 186 championship race starts to the end of the 2012 season.

Adding to that the highly public demise of the Hamilton street race, once championed as New Zealands own version of the enormously successful Clipsal 500 Adelaide, all was not rosy.

Fast forward to the eve of this weekends ITM 400 Auckland, where the championship will race at Pukekohe Park Raceway for the first time in six years, and the turnaround has been remarkable.

Brilliant early speed from Brad Jones Racings Car of the Future package has seen Coulthard chalk up five wins from the first nine races of the year (including the non-championship hit-outs at Albert Park).

Perhaps even more sensationally, Van Gisbergens shock return with Tekno

Autosports netted a first-up victory at the Clipsal 500, where the 23-year-old sensationally beat Jamie Whincup in a straight fight on Sunday.

If that wasnt enough, reigning Dunlop Series winner Scott McLaughlin - a 19-year-

  • old hailing from Christchurch - sealed a deal to graduate to the main championship last December, and has arguably been the most impressive rookie in the categorys history.

Headlined by a win in the fourth and final race at Albert Park, McLaughlins performances in Adelaide and Symmons Plains leave the teenager fifth in the standings heading to Pukekohe.

Coulthard is two places further down in seventh despite a double-disaster in Adelaide, while Van Gisbergen is also in the top 10 in ninth.

Experienced open-wheel and GT racer Jonny Reid will also receive some attention this weekend as the fourth Kiwi in the field, although his uncompetitive Dick Johnson Racing equipment ensures the focus will be squarely on the aforementioned trio.

All three are among the favourites to win the inaugural Jason Richards Memorial Trophy, which has been instigated to pay tribute to the former BJR driver who passed away in late 2011 following a battle with cancer.

I dont think you can put words on it, winning the Jason Richards trophy, that would be pretty sentimental to all of us at BJR, says Coulthard.

Coulthard, who had appeared set for

Coulthard, who had appeared set for a career as a V8 Supercars journeyman following starts with Tasman Motorsports, Paul Morris Motorsport, Paul Cruickshank Racing and Walkinshaw Racing prior to his 2012 move to BJR, was on top of the world after scoring two wins at Symmons Plains last weekend.

Its awesome to get two race wins and to go back home obviously full of confidence after winning a couple of races is critical, he said.

I am pretty ecstatic. I might not show it because I am not an emotional type of person, but its been a good weekend, all the guys have worked very hard in the off-season and given us a car we can fight very hard with.

Climbing from 22nd to sixth in the championship thanks to his Tassie performances, Coulthard knows he must continue to strike while the iron is hot.

We have a lot of work to do the key is to finish races, so we will take each round and each race as it comes and make the most of our chances, he said of his title tilt.

Our cars are very strong and I think now we have equal machinery with everyone else that is the true key.

(Last year) I was driving around in a car that was 2008 spec with a few updates here and there. Now we have Car of the Future, every car is virtually identical.

  • Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the switch from SBR to Tekno for this season is sure to hang over van Gisbergen when he arrives in Auckland, but that doesnt mean the three-time race V8 Supercars race winner isnt looking forward to the weekend.

Van Gisbergen, together with McLaughlin, Reid and 12 other drivers in this weekends field, have yet to race a V8 Supercar on the 2.91km venue.

I watched Murph win there all those years ago and raced at Pukekohe a couple of times when the Supercars were on (in support classes), he says of the Auckland venue.

Unfortunately I joined the series two months after (the categorys last race there), so I just missed out.

Pukey is the real home of V8 Supercars in New Zealand, so its fantastic to be going there.

The layout that will be used this weekend isnt identical to that raced on in days gone by however, with a chicane deep in the back straight having been added following concerns over the lack of run-off at the following hairpin.

Hopefully it creates more passing, says Van Gisbergen of the addition.

It should be pretty exciting. Theres a big viewing mound there for people to watch from. I think its a bit better than going straight to the hairpin.

The absence of Greg Murphy is perhaps the only real dampener for Kiwi fans. Walkinshaw Racing had made initial steps

towards putting a wildcard deal together for the four-time Pukekohe winner to compete, but that ultimately came to naught.

The Bathurst legend will at least be on hand at the meeting in an ambassadorial role.

Whether any of the current crop of Kiwi V8 Supercars stars can fill the now 40-year-olds considerably large shoes remains to be seen.

Circuit DescriptionA $6.6 million upgrade sees a new-look Pukekohe Park Raceway for the return of the V8 Supercars Championship in 2013. A range of works have been undertaken in recent months, including the addition of a chicane towards the end of the back straight which extends the circuit marginally from 2.83km to 2.91km.It is hoped that the change does not alter the fast and flowing nature of the layout, which last hosted the championship in 2007 prior to a five-year street racing experiment in nearby Hamilton.

    Races 6/7/8/9 - Pukekohe I Circuit Info

  • All drivers will be competing for the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy at Pukekohe named in honour of the V8 Supercar driver who lost his life to a rare form of cancer in December 2011.

    A proud Kiwi, Richards was a three-time Bathurst 1000 runner-up who made 131 ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship event starts between 2000 and 2010.

He competed in every Pukekohe V8 Supercar event between 2001 and 2007 for Team Kiwi Racing, Team Dynamik and Tasman Motorsport.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Pukekohe circuit, making it an extra special occasion for the creation of the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy and return of V8 Supercars to the venue.

The new trophy will be awarded to the driver that has the best combined results over the four races at Pukekohe.

DID YOUKNOW ?The return of the V8 Supercars Championship to Pukekohe Park Raceway in New Zealand marks the first time since 2007 that the category has competed at the historic Kiwi circuit.

This will be the eighth V8SC event at Pukekohe since the first in 2001 - which also was the first offshore event in championship history.

This year will be the 13th time the V8SC has competed in New Zealand after Hamilton hosted the countrys V8 Supercar event for the last five years on a street circuit.

Its a strange statistic, but after five races in the 2013 championship, the top three drivers in the pointscore - Jamie Whincup, Will Davison and James Courtney - are all yet to win a race.

Kiwi Fabian Coulthard is the only one to have won multiple races, though he sits seventh in the championship heading to his home event in New Zealand.

Of the other 2013 race winners so far, Craig Lowndes sits fourth, Shane van Gisbergen is ninth and Jason Bright is 12th.

There have been four different winners from the first five races, a spread not seen since 2008 when four different drivers shared the first five race wins of the championship.

Races 6/7/8/9 - Pukekohe I Did you know

  • Greg Murphy may not be racing full-time in V8 Supercars this year, but the ITM 400 Auckland event ambassador and Holden Racing Team endurance driver is still undoubtedly the King of Pukekohe.

Murphy won the event overall three years in a row from 2001 to 2003 for Kmart Racing and followed it up with another victory in 2005 for Supercheap Auto/PWR Racing.

He won nine championship races from 15 at Pukekohe between 2001 and 2005 in addition to claiming pole position in 2001 and 2003.

Murphy also won a non-championship V8 Supercar event at Pukekohe for the Holden Racing Team in 1996, claiming a clean sweep of three race wins that weekend.

More than half the field will be making their first V8 Supercar appearance at Pukekohe this weekend, though many of the drivers have competed at the venue in other categories.

A total of 15 of the 27 drivers have never raced a V8 Supercar at Pukekohe before. They are:

    - Jonathon Webb and Shane van Gisbergen (Tekno Autosports)- Tony DAlberto (Team HIFLEX)

    - Maro Engel (SP Tools Racing)- Jonny Reid and Tim Blanchard (Dick Johnson Racing)- Alex Davison (Team JELD-WEN)- David Wall (Wilson Security Racing)- Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat (Fujitsu Racing/GRM)- Michael Caruso and James Moffat (Norton 360 Racing)- Tim Slade (Heavy Haulage Australia Racing) - David Reynolds (The Bottle-O Racing Team)- Dean Fiore (Dodo Insurance Racing)

  • Fabian Coulthard has undeniably earned the right to be considered the favourite heading to his homeland of New Zealand this year.

A return to the hard tyre this weekend following the soft-shod Albert Park and Symmons Plains events may shake up the formbook slightly, but dont expect too many changes at the front.

Reassuringly for Coulthard, his Lockwood Holden was also one of the quickest on the hards at last months season opener in Adelaide.

Team-mate Jason Bright was not so strong in Adelaide, but believes his squad has cured the handling maladies that hampered the BOC VF over the street circuits lumps and bumps.

Although the new chicane section will undoubtedly be smooth, Pukekohe has traditionally been one of the bumpier venues on the calendar, so anyone struggling in that area will be in for a tough weekend.

The Bagman says...Jamie Whincup has yet to win a race this

season but the points leader and his Red Bull Racing Australia team-mate Craig Lowndes will be as threatening as ever here.

The fact that Triple Eight has not previously won a race at Pukekohe is a reflection on the timing of the circuits absence from the calendar, rather than any weakness from the Queensland-based outfit.

Adelaide winner Shane van Gisbergen struggled for set-up direction in Tasmania, but also looms as a major threat for victory

at Pukekohe. As usual, hell be the favourite if the land of the long white cloud delivers wet weather.

Of the factory squads, Ford Performance Racings Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison are potential winners, while the Holden Racing Team was also near the pace at Symmons Plains and will be eyeing more podiums.

The Nissans and Erebus operations will likely continue to struggle along outside the top 10 as their development programs continue.
