It may be the category’s fifth race meeting for the year, but finally race fans will see the V8 Supercars on a permanent Australian race track this weekend when the championship visits Perth’s Barbagallo

Raceway.

The 2.41km venue has been one of the most talked about circuits in Australia over the last decade, as V8 Supercars, the Western Australian Sporting Car Club and the Western Australian State Government have each pushed their agendas over the future of the event.

The outcome appears to be a great result for Australian motorsport, with Barbagallo’s facilities set for a freshen up, while the iconic seven-turn layout remains untouched.

It may not be Bathurst, but Barbagallo’s unique combination of surface quality, elevation changes, camber changes, kerbs and sand-traps have provided some great entertainment over five-decades of Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship racing.

The qualifying and race format for this weekend’s Trading Post Perth Challenge will certainly test the teams, which have worked tirelessly to repair and prepare cars after an action-packed ITM400 Hamilton.

Having the New Zealand and Perth events either side of Easter was perhaps an unfortunate twist to the 2011 calendar, but V8 Supercars team members are no strangers to working on public holidays, and will be back raring to go this weekend.

Q&A with GARTH TANDER

Seven races into the 2011 V8 Supercars Championship, Garth Tander sits fourth in the points standings - just 91 points behind leader

The 34-year-old has again had to recover from a tough run in Abu Dhabi’s season opener, before taking race wins in Adelaide and Albert Park.

Fresh from a podium finish in Race 6 at the ITM Hamilton 400, Tander heads into this weekend’s Trading Post Perth Challenge at Barbagallo with one eye on a sentimental home victory, and the other on the championship equation.

Speedcafe.com’s News Editor Grant Rowley spoke to the Holden Racing Team star about how the weekend will unfold.

SPEEDCAFE: You haven’t won at Barbagallo since 2007. You dominated the weekend that year, and then went on to win the title. A win this weekend would put you right back in the championship fight with Jamie and Rick (Kelly).

GARTH TANDER: It’s a bit early in the year to try and make the same parallels to 2007, but certainly I’d love to have another weekend there like we did in 2007. That was the first time I’d won any national level race there - so to get pole and three race wins was fantastic.

Obviously it’s a different format this year, especially with the way qualifying is going to be, and having soft tyre races as well as a hard tyre race. So it’ll be a bit more of a challenge this year, but we’ve got plenty of good form heading into the weekend.

SPEEDCAFE: Good form is a good way to put it. We’ve seen all of the leading contenders, yourself included, have some ups and downs across the season so far, but you certainly must have been happy with your performance on Sunday in Hamilton.

GT: I think in Sunday’s race we got the best result

that we could have. I don’t think we had the car to pass (Shane) van Gisbergen or (Lee) Holdsworth. It was fast enough to match them but we couldn’t pass them. So to go from 19th to third on a track that is hard to pass at was a great result.

We’ve probably had to do that too many times this year. At the Grand Prix we had to come through the field, and at Abu Dhabi we had to come through the field as well.

I think we have a fast race car, so as long as we don’t have any more of the dramas we’ve been having in qualifying, then we’ve got a good chance of winning races and scoring some pretty big results.

We proved in Adelaide that if we could qualifying up the front we could race up the front, and we’ve shown on numerous occasions that if we qualifying down the back we can charge our way through.

So if we have a solid qualifying performance then the results will come.

SPEEDCAFE: You touched on the format for the weekend earlier. It’s the only three-race format that we have this year, with a hard compound race on Saturday and two soft compound races on Sunday. Do the different tyre rules increase the importance of your Friday program?

GT: Yeah, it does, but really all we’re doing on Friday is getting a good balance for Saturday’s race. We practice on the hard tyre, and the first time we get to run the soft is in qualifying on Sunday morning. So in that regard it’ll be no different to normal. They’re only 30 minute sessions, but it’s a short circuit so you still get plenty of laps.

Friday will certainly be important, but for us the two qualifying sessions are the critical ones. Like I said, we’ve been a bit up and down with qualifying this year, and we need to make sure we’re somewhere up near the front.

across the Nullarbor however, as Shane van Gisbergen proved at Turn 3 in 2009.

CIRCUIT INFO

Located approximately 50km north of Perth, Barbagallo Raceway has been operating since 1969, and is one of the longest serving venues in the history of the Australian Touring Car/V8 Supercars Championship. The 2.42km circuit contains just one genuine left-hand corner, and is notable for its unique surface and vast sand traps. The V8 Supercars return to the venue for 3 x 120km races this year after a one-year absence. Saturday will be the sole domain of the hard compound tyre, while Sunday will see the soft tyre rolled out for the remaining qualifying session and races. The Trading Post Perth Challenge is the only event on the 2011 championship calendar to feature three races, while the qualifying format is also unique, with each driver’s second fastest lap from Qualifying 2 setting the grid for Race 3.

Barbagallo has got a bit of everything. It’s always been hard on brakes, and the low grip-level provides a massive challenge for everybody.

It’s a funny place - I’ve seen stiff cars work there and soft cars work there. There have been some very unique set-ups come out of Perth in its time - it’s never been a classic ‘run what you brung’ kind of place. You’re perpetually chasing your tale because of the way the track rubbers up.

SURFACE

The surface is always a big talking point. It has degraded very quickly over the years since they last resurfaced it (2004), and we won’t have a clue what it’s like this year until we turn up.

What we know for certain is that there won’t be a lot of grip. It’s a bit like driving in the rain, except that all the corners are long corners, so you can’t just run a soft set-up and hope that it works like you possibly would to ‘point and squirt’ in the rain, or at a bumpy circuit. You have to support your car somehow - that’s the trick. It’s always been about somehow getting the car around those long corners and still generating some grip.

QUALIFYING

We don’t get to practice on any softs, so the Sunday morning session will involve a little bit of guess work.

I’m surprised that more people didn’t petition to be able to take the (left-over) Abu Dhabi softs and run at least one practice session in Perth on softs.

Sunday’s 20-minute session will be a big challenge, with the second fastest lap setting the grid for Race 9. You really only get time for four two-lap runs, and they probably won’t do a time on their first lap, just because of front-tyre temperature. There aren’t a lot of corners, and only really one that turns left, so it’s always been a bit of a challenge for qualifying to have any sort of tyre heat in that right-front tyre.

It’ll be a very very tight qualifying session - we’ve seen the whole field covered by a second here in the past. It’ll be a watch this space in qualifying, because in the last five minutes the circuit really starts to rubber up, and it’s easy to get mixed up in traffic.

Red flags could play an even bigger part in qualifying than they did in Hamilton, because whenever a car goes off it tends to stop the session. That can really throw a spanner in the works. Obviously if you’re the one to cause the red flag, you’re starting from the back in both races, so it’s a big punishment.

up in front of you. You’ve really got to wait for a mistake to happen, or just be extremely brave. The brake temperatures go crazy, and there’s also a considerable aero affect down at Kolb Corner, with its off-camber exit. When you’re third in line you lose all your front aero, so you pick up a lot of understeer and can’t drive it out. You’re almost buggered if there’s more than a couple of cars - you’ve really got to fire in there and lean on people to make it around.

Having said that, we’ve seen a few drivers come from the rear of the grid there in the last couple of years. We saw Jamie (Whincup) qualifying outside the top 20 in 2008 and come through the field, so it can be done.

PITLANE

Perth’s pitlane is very narrow - we’ve seen more drive-throughs because of re-entry issues there than anywhere else. So that’ll be an interesting one to watch. I think there will be a whole lot of entertainment in the pitlane at Barbagallo - it will be interesting.

As far as strategy goes, the three races will be true sprints - the fuel windows shouldn’t affect the races, we’ll see guys stopping anywhere from Lap 10 or 11 onwards.

In the hard tyre race the tyre degradation probably won’t come in to it. People will only put rears on, and they’ll all be looking for clear track or a clear pitlane. They’ll be the two deciding factors. They’ll stop early to get a clear pitlane, or stop to try and get away from whoever is directly in front of them, and try to make

that break. So pitstops will be very very important. It’s always a nightmare, the pitlane there is very tight, and if you’re stuck in traffic and wait too long it’s quite easy to go a lap down.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE

One thing we see at Barbagallo is people abusing the inside kerb at what you might call Turn 3. Because you’re accelerating virtually up hill and it’s a crowned road, they try to take that kerb to two-wheel the car, which helps it turn and allows them to keep it in a bit tighter for the left-hander at Turn 4.

It works for some poeple and doesn’t for others. I think Craig (Lowndes) is the winner of getting air over there - we’ve seen the bottom of his car quite a few times! Most other guys tend to get around it without touching the kerb and without a time loss. It has a lot to do with how the car is turning in that next corner. Typically people are trying to stop oversteer out of Kolb, so they have an understeery car - which means you hurt in Turn 4.

We see people end up riding the Turn 7 exit kerb pretty hard as well, again due to the crowned road and understeer. In the race you’ve got to keep the bottom of the car off the ground there - it’s destroyed a few Watts Links in its time and various other hanging parts under the cars. The only saving grace is that you don’t hit it very fast.

For a little race track, it throws up some pretty unique challenges.

If there’s one thing that V8 Supercars isn’t afraid of doing, it’s experimenting with event formats.

Barbagallo marks the fifth V8 Supercars race meeting for the year, and introduces us to the season’s fifth different combination of qualifying sessions, race durations, number of races and tyre compound regulations.

It feels like a long time ago now that we had a one-size fits all, three 20-minute sprint race format.

What the current variety-based system provides is an ever-changing target for the teams and drivers to chase, which generally improves the unpredictability of the results, and hence the entertainment value of the show.

A bit like IndyCar’s mix of short ovals, superspeedways, road courses and street courses, or the World Rally Championship’s variety of surfaces, the different formats also guarantee a pretty deserving champion is crowned at season’s end.

Like most things in life however, the current situation does have its drawbacks. Most notably, the inconsistency and complexity of the current V8 Supercars product makes it a frighteningly difficult sell to the general sports fan.

While racing every weekend is clearly impractical, a television viewer should not be required to undertake a week’s worth of homework just so they can follow what’s going on when the cars are racing. One fears that this weekend’s additions, such as Sunday morning’s ‘double-qualifying’ session and the fact that three drivers will be soaked in Race 8 champagne heading into Race 9, will be a little confusing for those not quite up with the program.

Without wishing to advocate a ‘dumbing down’ of the sport to appease the masses, there are certainly a few elements to the race formats we’ve seen this year that could be done without.

Losing the two-compounds in one-race scenario is certainly a positive move. Keeping hard tyres for Saturday and soft tyres for Sunday, as will be seen this weekend, would provide that desired combination of variety and consistency if it was applied to more events.

The top 10 shootout also appears to be of marginal value, and is currently rolled out only on certain days at selected events. It has sentimental value at Bathurst, but if it’s not needed at Barbagallo why is it needed in Hamilton?

The non-points races at Albert Park do provide a good opportunity to experiment, but having a man they call ‘The Cheeseburger’ pulling a ping-pong ball out of his own helmet as part of the qualifying format was one of the more embarrassing ways to show off the category on the world stage.

At the end of the day, some categories around the world need wacky formats to make them interesting. V8 Supercars don’t - so let’s not add complexity for the sake of complexity.

DID YOU KNOW?

By taking Race 6 at the ITM Hamilton 400, Shane van Gisbergen became the 61st different race winner in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship.

The success broke a 76 race winless streak for Stone Brothers Racing, stretching back to James Courtney’s win on Saturday at Queensland Raceway in 2008.

The SP Tools Falcon driver also became the first New Zealander to win a V8 Supercars Championship race on home soil since Greg Murphy triumphed at Pukokohe in 2005.

Van Gisbergen has finished no better than 10th in any of the five championship races he has contested at Barbagallo across 2008 and 2009.

Sunday’s Race 8 of the season is a special mile-stone for the Australian Touring Car Champion-ship/V8 Supercars Championship, as it marks the 750th race in the category’s history.

Indicative of the sport’s evolution, the first 250 races were held between 1960 and 1993, while it took just nine more seasons to rack up 500.

Jim Richards won the 250th race at Oran Park in 1993 in his Gibson Motor Sport Commodore VP, while Mark Skaife took the 500th race, held at Pukekohe in 2002, for the Holden Racing Team..

Of the 748 races held to this point, Barbagallo has hosted 66 of them. It hosted an event of the ATCC/V8SC every year from 1978 to 2009.

There have been five different winners from the first six races in this year’s V8 Supercars Championship, as well as five different pole-sitters from the six pole positions on offer.

The last time the first six races were won by five different drivers was 14 years ago in 1997 at Calder and Phillip Island (Glenn Seton two, Wayne Gardner, Greg Murphy, Russell Ingall and Larry Perkins).

The race winners this year have been Jamie Whincup (twice), James Courtney, Garth Tander, Rick Kelly and Shane van Gisbergen.

Three drivers are making their first start in a V8 Supercar at Barbagallo Raceway in the Trading Post Perth Challenge.

James Moffat (Jim Beam Racing), Jonathon Webb (Mother Energy Racing Team) and Karl Reindler (Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing) are all having their first look at the circuit in a V8 Supercar.

Moffat has raced there previously in Formula Ford (winning the round in 2007) and Porsche Carrera Cup (finishing third in 2008).

Webb (right) has raced at Barbagallo in Carrera Cup (finishing third in 2005), while Reindler has competed in a range of categories there in the past, including sharing a MINI Challenge entry with his brother Chris at the V8 Supercars event in 2009.

Craig Lowndes is the championship’s record holder for the most race wins at Barbagallo - taking 13 victories since his debut in 1996.

The TeamVodafone driver’s time at the venue got off to a flying start, with Lowndes winning 12 consecutive races at the Western Australian circuit between 1996 and 2000.

After a long dry spell, Lowndes returned to the winners circle in 2009 by taking Race 6 in his Falcon FG.

Mark Skaife also enjoyed much success at Barbagallo with eight race wins.

DAYTIME:

CRAIG ON PERTHPerth is a beautiful place, it’s got great beaches and obvi-ously the Swan River runs right through the city, so there are plenty of water sports activities go-ing on. I’ve got fond memories of the city and I always enjoy getting back there. We normally stay by the beach, which is fantastic - there’s great scenery and it’s really nice to go for a run along the beach in the morning or the after-noon.

The event at Barbagallo is actually quite challenging. The circuit itself is only small, but in saying that it always creates some good racing. The degradation of the tyre is quite high and the cars start to move around quite quick-ly, so you need really good balance. The fans are awesome in Perth and I’ve got a lot of friends over there. By 10am on Saturday and Sunday the event is at maximum capac-ity, so it’s really well supported.

Just because you’re on the road doesn’t mean you workout schedule needs to suffer. It’s easy to turn a hotel room or bedroom into a mini-gym by completing some simple exercises, such as push-ups. Here are my three simple steps to a successful push-up.

EXERCISE OF THE EVENT: THE PUSH-UP

1) Place your hands shoulder-width apart, feet together

2) Lower your body towards the floor in a controlled man-ner, keeping your back straight

3) When your chest is two inches from the floor, push up to position 1). Repeat.
