The Underground Railroad The Underground Railroad was an inventive technique used to assist slaves in escaping the harsh plantations of the South. The class will place participants on these plan- tations and allow them to vicariously experience what it was like to yearn for freedom that finally came by way of the Underground Railroad. Experiences such as real and true slave stories, learning vocabulary used to deceive the slaveholders, reading the stars to travel by night; using quilts to send messages; taking care of illnesses with herbs, reading maps and plotting miles, writing and read- ing poetry, singing the folk music that came from the situ- ation of slavery, listening to spirituals, and even rapping about the Underground Railroad will be included.
