Welcome

Gathering

The Spirit that rushes in like a gust of wind

is also the Spirit of gentleness.

The Spirit that tears down walls between people

is also the Spirit that opens hearts and minds.

The Spirit that burnishes with fire

is also the Spirit that renews and creates.

The Spirit that brings us to our knees in fear of the Lord

is also the Spirit that lifts us up in the light of Christ.

Gathering

The Spirit that brings a language of its own to our lips

is also the Spirit that carries the prayers of all to God.

Burn away all that is dead within us.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Increase our understanding.

Spur us into faithful action.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Gathering

Strengthen us to stand with our neighbors,

to fight against oppression,

to stand for peace,

to trust in God’s faithfulness,

and to live and die in Christ for the sake of the world.

Confession

To prepare our hearts to receive God’s word,

let us confess our sin in the presence of God. Most merciful God,

we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will

and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Forgiveness

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us,

and for his sake God forgives us all our sins.

As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ,

and by God’s authority,

I announce to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins,

in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray together.

Spirit… Wind… Breath…

fill our lungs and lives with your energizing presence;

refresh our minds and stir our hearts with gusts of wind of your Spirit;

that we may be your breathing, passionate presence in the world.

By your Holy Spirit,

kindle in us the fire of your love,

empowering our lives for service

and our tongues for praise of you.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Reading: Acts 2:1-21 The Voice Bible

A reading from Acts 2.

Narrator: When the holy day of Pentecost came 50 days after Passover,

they were gathered together in one place.

Picture yourself among the disciples:

A sound roars from the sky without warning, the roar of a violent wind,

and the whole house where you are gathered reverberates with the sound.

Then a flame appears, dividing into smaller flames and spreading from one person

to the next. All the people present are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin

speaking in languages they’ve never spoken, as the Spirit empowers them.

Narrator: Because of the holy festival, there are devout Jews staying as pilgrims in

Jerusalem from every nation under the sun. They hear the sound, and a crowd

gathers. They are amazed because each of them can hear the group speaking

in their native languages. They are shocked and amazed by this.

Pilgrims: Just a minute. Aren’t all of these people Galileans?

How in the world do we all hear our native languages being spoken?

Look — there are Parthians here, and Medes, Elamites, Mesopotamians, and

Judeans, residents of Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia, Phrygians and Pamphylians,

Egyptians and Libyans from Cyrene, Romans including both Jews by birth and

converts, Cretans, and Arabs. We’re each, in our own languages,

hearing these people talk about God’s powerful deeds.

Narrator: Their amazement becomes confusion as they wonder,

Pilgrims: what does this mean?

Skeptics: It doesn’t mean anything. They’re all drunk on some fresh wine!

Narrator: As the twelve stood together, Peter shouted to the crowd,

Peter: Men of Judea and all who are staying here in Jerusalem, listen.

I want you to understand: these people aren’t drunk as you may think.

Look, it’s only nine o’clock in the morning!

No, this isn’t drunkenness; this is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel.

Hear what God says!

Peter continues: In the last days, I will offer My Spirit to humanity as a libation.

Your children will boldly speak the word of the Lord.

Young warriors will see visions,

and your elders will dream dreams.

Yes, in those days I shall offer My Spirit to all servants,

both male and female, and they will boldly speak My word.

And in the heaven above and on the earth below,

I shall give signs of impending judgment: blood, fire, and clouds of smoke.

The sun will become a void of darkness,

and the moon will become blood.

Then the great and dreadful day of the Lord will arrive,

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

will be liberated into God’s freedom and peace.

Word of the Spirit, Word of Life. Thanks be to God!

Gospel: John 20:19-23 NIV Bible

The good news from John 20. Open our hearts, Lord.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together,

with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,

Jesus came and stood among them and said,

“Peace be with you!”

After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.

The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

Gospel

Again Jesus said,

“Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

And with that he breathed on them and said,

“Receive the Holy Spirit.

If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven;

if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

This is the Good News!

Like the murmur of the dove's song, like the challenge of her flight,

to the church in faith assembled, to our midst as gift and sign:

Pentecost Affirmation

Let us affirm our faith as Spirit-filled people.

We believe in God,

Creator and Sustainer of all that lives;

the One in whose image all are made;

the One who kept covenant with Sarah and Abraham

and never forgot Hagar,

who answered Hannah’s deepest prayer,

and gave songs to Miriam, Deborah and Mary;

the One who loves, hears and sings with us still today.

Pentecost Affirmation

We believe in Jesus Christ,

Redeemer and Savior of all who believe;

the One who loved Martha and Mary;

the One who fed the crowds,

who healed the woman who bled,

and raised Jairus’ daughter and Lazarus;

the One whose love, life, death and rising re-creates us still today.

We believe in the Spirit,

Comforter and Interpreter for all who cry out;

the One who came in fire and wind;

the One who gave courage to Esther,

Prayers of the People

On this day of Pentecost we unite in prayer,

asking God to send the Holy Spirit

on the church, the world, and all who are in need.

We pray for the church around the globe:

For the Eastern Orthodox churches, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

For the Roman Catholic church, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

For Protestant and Anglican churches, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

For evangelicals and independents, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

For Holy Spirit congregation, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

And for everyone who searches for you, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

Restore with your breath the whole creation,

especially the lands and waters laden with pollution

and the animals whose habitats are threatened.

For your earth, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

Send your Spirit on the leaders of nations, on legislators, and on judges,

that the people of the world will benefit from your justice and your peace.

For the nations of the world, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

As Elizabeth welcomed Mary to her home, give us ways during this time

to share with one another the faithfulness we receive from you. Surprise us with

unexpected grace. For family members and friends, we pray:

Come, Holy Spirit.

Visit all who are suffering, all who feel hopeless, and all who face death.

Send healing to those we name here before you especially Lois, Louise, Stephanie,

Louise, Janet, Lea, Kathy, Abby, Ollie, Sue, Jace, Helen, Jim, Hank, Eleanor, Chick,

Kevin, Linda, Alma, Dottie, Linda, Dorothy, Mark, Jan, Colby, Scott, Eric, Carol,

Theresa, Lauren, Nicole, Dean, Becky, Faye, Edna, Tom, Joel, Joyce, Heather, Anne,

Jim, Joann, Josh, Kelsie, Elizabeth, Dennis, Bobby, Jackie, Jolene, David, Sherri, Emily,

Sarah, Phil, Chip, Heather, Scott, David, Nathan, Jocelyn, Mary, George, Marty,

Victoria, Shannon, Mathai, Elizabeth, Sue, Jeff, Carina, Erin, Chuck, Ksenia, James,

Jenna, Joe, Nate, Tony, Taylor family, Deepti, Vikam, and Brett. We pray for other

frontline employees at hospitals, first responders, grocery stores, warehouse

workers, delivery drivers, postal workers, restaurant workers, teachers and students,

seniors who will not experience graduations/ceremonies, residents in nursing homes,

senior residences and life care facilities, residents in special needs homes and

hospitals, those expecting a child, those on the adoption journey, our pastors, staff,

Eucharistic Ministers and Stephen Ministers. For all who are confronting the

coronovirus, we pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

Show our nation and our churches how to connect with those whose language we

cannot speak. For the speakers of every language under the sun we pray:

Come, Holy Spirit.

Receive our praise for all who for centuries have gone before us in the faith,

especially Neil Boger, from the first Pentecost, throughout Christian history, and up to

this week. That at the end we and all the saints will rejoice in your presence, we

pray: Come, Holy Spirit.

With bold confidence in your love, almighty God, we place all for whom we pray

into your eternal care; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen
