Refrigerators that inform their owners when it’s time to buy more eggs and thermostats that learn home-owners’ heating and cooling preferences may once have seemed like futuristic ideas straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, such products are no longer a dream but a reality.

The term “smart home” refers to a residence that has appliances, HVAC, lighting, entertainment systems, secu-rity, and many more devices that communicate with one another. Such devices can be controlled remotely, according to SmartHomeU-SA, an automation product retailer. Proponents of smart home technology say fea-tures can help people save money on utilities and con-serve natural resources, all the while providing peace of mind to homeowners.

In 2016, 80 million smart home devices were deliv-ered worldwide. That marks a 64 percent increase from 2015, according to the re-search data firm IHS Markit. The smart home trend is only expected to grow in coming years.

Although there’s interest in smart home technolo-gy, the industry remains fragmented. Consumers are trying to figure out which devices are simply fun and which provide practical ben-efits. Furthermore, the range of smart devices is expand-ing rapidly, making potential compatability issues a concern. Companies that plan to educate consumers further about the advantages of smart home features and are open to standardization may have the best chances of survival.

Those interested in dab-bling in some smart home technology and testing the waters may want to start

with the following house-hold items.

• Smart bulbs: Manufac-turers offer various types of smart light bulbs. Some are color-changing, others react to doorbells or alarms, and others can simulate typical lighting patterns when homeowners are away. In-tegrated apps enable remote access to scheduling so people can arrive home to a well-lit house.

• Home security: Wi-Fi enabled doorbells with video capabilities allow residents to see who is at the door without having to open it. Cameras can even be accessed remotely, simulating that someone is at home at all times. Never wonder if you’ve locked the door again with smart locks that can be engaged via a smartphone. Make sure that homes are secured or that pets are behaving while out with smart cameras.

• Flood sensor: Get peace of mind against damaging floods with Wi-Fi flood sensors.

• Appliances: A new breed of smart appliances can make it possible for users to turn on the washing ma-chine while out of the house, close refrigerator doors from afar or even start their vacuum cleaners remotely.

Smart technology is taking over and is likely to continue changing the way people live and work.

What is a smart home?

5-Ingredient Lemon BarsLet’s Get Cooking! Recipe by Ali, GimmeSomeOven.com

INGREDIENTS:SHORTBREAD CRUST INGREDIENTS:1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour3/4 cup cold butter, diced1/4 cup powdered sugarzest of 1 lemon

LEMON FILLING INGREDIENTS:4 Large eggs1 cup Powdered sugar1/2 cup Freshly-squeezed lemon Juice2 Tbs All-purpose flour

DIRECTIONSPreheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8 x 8-inch baking pan with parchment paper; set aside.Combine all of the crust ingredients in a food processor. Pulse until the mixture reaches a fine crumble consistency. You want the butter to be well combined, but to stop before the mixture turns into a ball. (Alternately, you can combine the crust ingredients together in a mixing bowl with a pastry cutter or a fork.)Sprinkle the crust mixture evenly into the pre-pared pan. Then press the mixture down firmly to form an even layer.Bake the crust for 20 minutes, or until it is lightly golden on top.Meanwhile, whisk the lemon filling ingredients together in a medium mixing bowl until combined. If your powdered sugar or flour are too chunky or there are lots of bubbles whisked into the filling, feel free to just pour the filling through a fine-mesh strainer to get it nice and smooth before adding it to the crust. (But if there are a few little clumps, that’s ok too!)Once the crust is done baking, remove the pan from the oven and immediately pour the lemon filling on top of the hot crust. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 18-20 more minutes*, or until the lemon filling has set.Remove the pan from the oven and transfer to a wire baking rack to cool until the bars reach room

temperature. Then transfer to the refrigerator and let the bars chill for at least 2 hours.Sprinkle the tops of the bars with extra powdered sugar*, if you would like, then slice and serve!

NOTES*If baking these bars in an 9 x 9-inch baking dish, cooking time will be a few minutes less.

*If you would like to add on decorative lemon slic-es, I recommend adding them just before serving since the lemon juice soaks out fairly quickly into the powdered sugar topping. To minimize the juiciness of the lemons, I blotted my lemon slices briefly on a paper towel before adding them to the bars. :)

“It is only when men begin to worshipthat they begin to grow.” Calvin Coolidge

“ I am a human being, not a human doing. Don’t equate your self-worth with how well you do things in life. You aren’t what you do. If you are what you do,

then when you don’t...you aren’t.” Wayne Dyer

LOVE is not what you say.

Love is what you do.

Don’t forget that you are the lighthouse in someone else’s storm

The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is to just love and

to be loved in return. -Eden Ahbez
