PRINCE WILLIAM TODAY

Here’s a irst in Hoops Fest history. Both of last year’s 3-point champions are back for another shot at a title. And they are only sophomores.

Woodbridge’s Hanna Oliver and Freedom’s James West IV will defend their champion-ships at Hoops Fest 20 March 19 at Potomac High School.

There have been four previous back-to-back title winners in the history of the event. Forest Park’s Whitney French and Chanel Shands won the girls 3-point shootout in 2001-02 and 2009-10, Christ Chapel’s Stephen Brown won the boys 3-point shootout in 2011-12 and Potomac’s Donald Vaughn won the slam-dunk title in 2007-09.

Last year, neither Oliver nor West showed freshman jitters. West took off in the inals, making nine straight baskets at one point and inishing with 19 points.

Oliver stayed consistent through three rounds, scoring 10 points in the irst round, nine in a shoot-off because of a tie and then 10 in the inals.

Hoops Fest, which is sponsored by Prince

William Today and InsideNoVa.com and showcases Prince William County’s top boys and girls basketball players in a series of skills competitions, raises money for a family in need.

In 2014, Hoops Fest 19 raised $5,000 for Gar-Field freshman Devi’in Pender and his family to pay for renovation costs not covered by insurance after the family’s Dale City house burned down Nov. 9, 2013.

In 19 years, Hoops Fest has raised $138,332.99 helping families in Prince William County.

Hoops Fest was irst held in 1996 at Wood-bridge High School when $4,000 was raised to help Woodbridge graduate Lee Thompson Jr. get prosthetics for his legs after both were amputated when he contracted spinal meningitis.

hoops fest throuGh the years

If you saw Isla Lucks happily running around and playing, wearing a big loral headband, you might not know she is battling a life-threaten-ing disease.

The bright-eyed, smiley 22-month-old was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma when she was just shy of 15 months old.

“She’s just amazing,” Isla’s mother, Amy Lucks, said. “You wouldn’t know that her life is different than any other baby her age.”

Isla’s life is different though. Since she was diagnosed on July 31, Isla has gone through ive rounds of chemotherapy and had surgery to remove a tumor in her abdomen. Most re-cently, at a children’s hospital in Philadelphia, she underwent an injected radiation therapy called mibg therapy that required her to stay in isolation for some time.

She will soon have tests to determine the next steps in her treatment plan, which could include a stem cell transplant.

Proceeds from the 20th annual Hoops Fest will go to Isla and her family to help pay for her medical costs and the family’s expenses traveling to hospitals in Philadelphia and New York for her treatment.

“It’s kind of crazy,” Lucks said of the whirl-wind ride of doctor’s appointments, hospital stays and treatments Isla and her family, including her mother, her father, Chris Lucks and her older brother, 3-year-old Elliot, have been on over the past few months. “Basically we’re just taking it one step at a time. She is just amazing. She makes it look easy.”

News of Isla’s diagnosis spread quickly through the Potomac High School community. Amy Lucks graduated from Potomac in 2000, her brother, Michael, in 1998, and sister, Laura, Potomac in 2006.

Potomac’s varsity cheerleading coach, Hilary Mahalchick, who coached Laura when she was at Potomac, heard about Isla’s diagnosis through a post Laura made on Facebook.

“It pretty quickly went viral in the Potomac High School community,” said Mahalchick, a 1995 Potomac graduate herself. “Being a smaller high school, Potomac really is like a family.”

Mahalchick and other teachers and alumni started organizing some local fundraisers to beneit the Lucks family, longtime residents of the Potomac area. Funds raised through a dunk tank at Potomac’s annual community day went to the Lucks family and little Isla was named an honorary homecoming princess, riding in this year’s parade with her family.

When school oficials learned Potomac would host this year’s Hoops Fest fundraiser, they knew exactly who they wanted the funds to support.

“Her family is just so nice,” Mahalchick said. The Lucks family has set up a Facebook

page to update friends and family on Isla. The page’s title, “Isla the Fierce,” is telling.

“She’s just so little but she has this ighting spirit,” Mahalchick said.
