The Project's Milestones

• Preparatory SeminarThe first part of the project consists of a one-week preparatory seminar in Olten, Switzerland, with expert guest lecturers from various fields such as Manage-ment, Culture, Law, and Politics who offer a thorough introduction to life and work in China. In addition, during this week the chosen delegation members meet and work together the first time what inevitably leads to a valuable network. At the end of the preparatory seminar each and every one who is entitled to enjoy the On-Site Seminar in China will have a deep understanding about the Chinese culture and the way the Chinese do business.

• On-Site SeminarThe second part of this project is a two-week On-Site Seminar in China, where about 25 to 30 selected students and university lecturers visit Chinese metropolises. The study trip focuses on transferring knowledge between senior executives, government officials, universities, and students. This will mainly be achieved by visits of companies and public institutions, as well as official receptions and discussions. This outstanding journey is a must for everybody who seeks to broaden one's horizon as well as to discover how the Chinese do business.

• Final EventIn order to reflect on the learnt lessons and digest the outstanding impressions of the Preparatory Seminar and the On-Site Seminar a Final Event will take place in Olten. Insight China 2016 as well as its partner projects will present their insights and experiences.

• DelegationStarting in autumn 2015, the Insight China 2016 Delegation will be formed. An exclusivley chosen group of final year students who graduate from the School of Business, Engineering, Life Sciences, Applied Psychology, and Social Work will foster an international and cross-educational learning environment.

Insight China consists of three major parts: the Preparatory Seminar, the On-Site Seminar, and the Final Event. Each of the milestones has its own aims but all stand in the overall framework of broaden the participants horizon as well as to educate on how the Chinese do business.

"Insight China is a prestigious project in its 15th anniversary year at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). Denoting the beginning of FHNW’s international students projects, Insight China offers ambitious students the opportunity to gain insights into China’s cultural and economical diversity.

By promoting exchange between professionals and students, both sides benefit from each other through the combination of theory and practical experience. Becoming a part of Insight China offers a direct access to talented and devoted students from various academic fields which might become your future employees.

«Made in China 2025»

This year’s theme focuses on China’s strategy to transform its industry into a leading high-tech industrial player. Low-tech mass production used to be key for the country’s tremendous GDP growth-rates over the past decades. However, this expansion caused negative effects as well. It is hence of greatest importance for the Chinese government to access new industries. Through our theme we would like to focus on how China wants to shift its industry and by that explore some of the key sectors of «Made in China 2025». Addressing arising threats and opportunities for Swiss companies which have exposure to China as well as possibilities for Swiss expatriates are, among other fields, issues that are covered in this year’s Insight China project.

We would be happy to welcome you as an active contributor to this project. The success and scope of In-sight China largely depends on the support and sponsorship from companies such as yours. We appreciate your endorsement and look forward to a mutually beneficial collaboration combined with an interesting knowledge transfer among all parties involved."

"In order to fully satisfy all needs of the delegation, partners and organizations which are involved, Insight China is depended on financial contributions from partners within the industry such as you are. Although the selected members of the delegation also provide considerable resources additional support is required.

Especially the travel expenses to and within China make the lion’s share of our budget. In addition, the accommodation during the On-site trip as well as the organization of the preparatory seminar also account for a large part of the project’s spending. Summarized, we inevitably rely on the generosity and support of Insight China’s partners in order to provide our services and create a unique and international learning environment.

Please get an overview of our budgeted spending as well as our expectations towards the funding of Insight China. We defined the financial goal as such that we try to keep the students’ burden as small as possible. In order to do so the project team of Insight China tries to raise as much resources as possible."

"Since 2001, the FHNW School of Business has offered International Student Projects and in 2015, Insight China, Focus India and connectUS will again deliver international, interdisciplinary, experiential learning opportunities for students and staff from across our university. The projects occupy a key position in our international management education and are supported by the highest levels of the School of Business. Due to huge success of these projects, 2015/16 will also see the launch of a fourth project exploreASEAN.

The two-part projects include both seminars in Switzerland and abroad. Each project delivers a one-week preparatory seminar in Switzerland open to all final-year students from the Schools of Business, Engineering and Life Sciences (plus other FHNW Schools on application) as well as international students from our broad network of partner universities worldwide. The preparatory seminar offers the participants an insight into the country, the business environment and the socio-economic and demographic challenges facing the country. Speakers from industry, embassies and trade organisations, chambers of commerce as well as FHNW lecturers offer the participants a comprehensive seminar. In the international phase, each project takes an interdisciplinary delegation of between twenty and thirty students and staff to travel to their chosen country. The two-week programme includes visits to three or four cities or regions and focuses on investigating a defined theme through visits to industry partners, government departments and embassies, social projects, partner universities and trade promotion agencies such as chambers of commerce.

The knowledge, networks and experience of the School of Business and the industry partners creates a supportive learning environment within which the students can develop and excel; delivers theoretical, applied and experiential learning opportunities; and reduces expenditure and risk.

As a public institution, the FHNW finances the preparatory seminars and all costs for lectures and staff fully. However, our resources do not allow us to sponsor the travelling costs for the highly-motivated final-year students selected to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. This means we rely on the generosity and support of our sponsors to make these projects a reality.

To our knowledge, Insight China, Focus India, connectUS and exploreASEAN are unique within Switzerland due to their nature, their organisation and in particular the central role played by students in defining, organising and leading the projects. Their future success is especially due to the close and supporting relationship with the sponsors."
