COMMUNITY CATEGORY

Psychiatric Survivors of Ottawa Psychiatric Survivors of Ottawa was founded in 1991 by a handful of people who had each been through some type of mental illness. The group now has over 200 members who run support programs, organize social events, and act as advocates for the mentally ill.

PERSONAL CATEGORY

Gregory Matthews In 1995 Gregory Matthews had a run in with the law; he was found not criminally responsible for his actions due to mental illness and he began to receive treatment for schizophrenia and substance abuse. He is now a successful college student, a peer tutor, an avid volunteer, and a generous artist who often donates his work to charities to help them raise money for mental health causes.

Alyse Schacter At 12 years old Alyse Schacter was diagnosed with severe, treatment-resistant Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Alyse is an honour student, a budding philanthropist, and an active volunteer who spends hundreds of hours every year helping others by, among other things, sharing her story with other young people and helping to develop Canada’s mental health strategy.

Steven Lively & Marcia Mills As a soldier deployed to central Africa in the mid-nineties – an experience that led Steve to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Steven and his wife, Marcia faced this challenge together. Steven found a program and clinicians that, along with Marcia’s support, helped him cope with PTSD. Steven is now a supporter and advocate for others who are suffering. Marcia also works to eradicate stigma and make mental health part of our daily language.

Rachel Scott-Mignon Rachel Scott-Mignon has been struggling with bipolar disorder virtually all of her life. Now, at 27 years old she has made it her mission to take on the stigma that surrounds mental illness so that other children and teenagers don’t feel like they must suffer in silence like she did. Rachel shares her personal story in order to provide hope and understanding to others by blogging on youknowwhoiam.com, speaking to community groups and doing tv and radio appearances.

“From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave you get this bit of a glow. You don’t get that with other galas (where) you are just there and aren’t participating as much.”

— Returning Corporate Sponsor

“The value I get out of it is being with people who are like-minded and want to support a cause andcontribute to that cause in more ways than one. The financial aspects of the funds being raised that nightas a result of my being there and being involved, the educational awareness that arises, that sense ofcommunity where you can all work and come together for a cause – the rallying of support. That is thevalue I see. The dollars we spend makes very good value for money.”
