SIMPLE SPANISH: INTRO TO
THE BASICS After English,
Spanish is the most widely spoken
language in the US. Learning even a
few phrases and words in Spanish
can allow you to communicate with
Spanish speakers in your community, on vacation, or even
at work. Simple Spanish: Intro to the Basics will introduce
students to Spanish by focusing on basic greetings, introductions,
expressions of courtesy, and common vocabulary. Concepts
will be reinforced with the use of visual cues, games, and other
activities. This class serves as a very basic introduction to
Spanish, so students do not need any prior knowledge of the
language. Remember, it is always the perfect time to start
learning a new language! Fee: $20

RUSHVILLE ASTRONOMY SERIES Since ancient times
the night sky has challenged the intellect and sparked the
imagination. Many people become interested in astronomy, only
to quickly give it up because they have no one to guide them.
Amateur Astronomer, Rob Kirkham, will guide students through
the entry levels of this fascinating past time. Rob has been
interested in Astronomy since childhood. He is an award winning
member of the Astronomical League. He has often given
astronomy lectures to civic groups and college classes.
Night Photography: Capture the Stars Learn how to take
pictures of nightscapes, star trails, constellations, meteors, the
International Space Station, and more. This is an advanced
photography lab. This class will offer hands on guidance in night
photography with an award winning astrophotographer. Students
will learn how to capture pictures and process them with software
that can downloaded for free. If time permits, students may also
be introduced to advanced astronomy photo processing and given
an opportunity to take a picture through a telescope. Students are
required to bring a DSLR camera. Because of the technical
nature of this class, registration is limited to the first 8 paid
students. Fee: $15 per person
Rushville, Spoon River College (CE074R1/FA15) Thursday, September 10, 7-10pm
Binocular and Telescope Clinic Learn how to get the most from
equipment you may already own. Christmas is just around the
corner! If you are planning to purchase a telescope, don’t do it
until after taking this class. In this class Rob explains how to use
common binoculars for serious astronomy. This class will show
how to purchase a quality telescope for the least amount of
money, and why to stay away from department store telescopes.
Students are encouraged to bring their old telescopes. Rob will
show ways to get as much use as possible from that old Christmas
telescope that was tossed in the attic. He will explain how to
realign those old binoculars that got knocked out of alignment. If
weather permits, the class will end with some observing time
through one of Rob’s own telescopes. Because of the technical
nature of this class, registration is limited to the first 8 paid
students. Fee: $10 per person
Rushville, Spoon River College (CE074R2/FA15) Thursday, October 22, 7-9pm
Stargazing for the Family Learn how to enjoy the night sky as a
family. In this class Rob introduces the current night sky. Learn
what astronomical events are about to occur. Learn the stories
of the constellations. Learn how to turn a midnight walk into a
bonding experience for the entire family. Learn how to download
and use free software that will quickly keep you up to date. This
class is never the same twice, because the sky is always changing.
If weather permits, this class will conclude out under the night
sky. Tip: Students will get more out of this class if they bring a
small flash drive with them. They will be given an opportunity to
download useful software. Fee: $10 per family
