Spoon River Reads Features Steinbeck’s America and the Great Depression Let the reading begin! The Spoon River Reads committee has selected John
Steinbeck’s classic novel The Grapes of Wrath as its featured novel for the 2013
Read program. The Grapes of Wrath was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 but
its focus on the American themes of hard work, self-determination, and reasoned
dissent makes it timeless. In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1962,
Steinbeck said, “Literature is as old as speech. It grew out of human need for it,
and it has not changed except to become more needed.”
The Grapes of Wrath chronicles the life of an Oklahoma farm family, the Joads,
who are driven off their homestead and forced to travel west with thousands of
others seeking the promised land of California during the Dust Bowl migration
of the 1930s. The migrants began their journey to California due to the stock
market crash of 1929, because of the post-World War I recession, as a result of a
seven year drought which devastated family farms and caused bank foreclosures,
and because of an unemployment rate of nearly 30%.
The Spoon River College Foundation, Parlin Ingersoll Public Library, Two Rivers
Arts Council, and many other partnering organizations and businesses are
sponsoring over 20 public events from now through November 10th to celebrate
Steinbeck’s America and the Great Depression.

CAREER EXPLORATION & TRAINING Career Training opportunities are available! Whether you are currently unemployed, looking to enhance skills for future employment, or interested in learning a new career we are here to support you!
ACT KEYTRAIN/WORKKEYS/NATIONAL CAREER
READINESS CERTIFICATE Many businesses today are
using additional screening tools to determine what type of
employee they want to interview for a job. One of those "tools"
comes from ACT, the same national company which facilitates
college entrance and other workforce examinations. SRC offers
three ACT products: (1) KeyTrain is a computer-based study and
test preparation course for the Math, Locating Information, and
Reading for Information WorkKeys tests. (2) WorkKeys is a
series of tests which prove that a person has reached a specified
level of success. (3) The National Career Readiness Certificate
proves that a person has completed the testing process and is
eligible for approximately 85% (or more depending on the scores)
of the entry level jobs in the United States.
Cook Medical, the Harvester Inn of Canton, and other businesses
use ACT testing to determine who is eligible to apply for a job or
position. They may also require additional testing such as the
ACT Observation Test and manual dexterity tests. Those
interested in applying for jobs are welcome and encouraged to
take advantage of these free WorkKeys services at the
Community Outreach Centers. Testing fees, which normally
range from $7.00 - $8.50 per test, are waived and, therefore, there
is no cost to participants.
The Outreach Centers' Employability Skills Centers also offer free
ILWorkNet enrollment. ILWorkNet has a wealth of
resources for those seeking employment. Call one of the
Outreach Centers to learn of upcoming testing dates or to
schedule Employability Skill Center appointments.
EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS CENTERS The Spoon River
College Office of Community Outreach Employability Skills

skill enhancement, resume writing, interview skills, and
job search, which includes researching job demand and income
potential in regions of Illinois. A variety of resources will

WorkKeys, Key Train and Career Ready 101, face to face soft
skill training, Ed2Go internet-based short-term classes, and
