It was the first time since 2004 they had scored more than one goal in a postseason contest. "It puts you in a good position," said SKC manager Peter Vermes. "The key was to get out of here with a result. We got a shutout, but we go home thinking it’s 0-0 and we’ve got to play again. They got rewarded for their discipline, tactically. The game plan was good and the guys executed it very well. We’ve got to do that again [Wednesday]." ... Including the final two games of the regular season, Sporting Kansas City have now not allowed a goal in three games. They have a 275-minute shutout streak active. "We had a plan before the game. We stuck to the plan the whole game," said goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. "When the first players do their job, it makes it easy for the midfield. When the midfield does their job, it makes it easy for the defenders. At the end of the day, I had nothing to do today. It was fantas- tic." ... Teal Bunbury became the third player in KC club history to score two goals in a playoff game, the first since Davy Arnaud in 2004. "Teal [Bunbury] is a very strong guy. When he plays shoulder to shoulder with some guys, he can easily dominate in that area," Vermes said. "He holds players off the ball very well. Once he gets a little step by you, with his explosiveness, he can get by you. He showed that." ... Omar Bravo was a late scratch from the starting line- up after suffering tightness in his groin. Bravo had missed just two league games since late May after sitting out five games following sports hernia sur- gery. “It was better to give him some him rest and get him ready for the next game as opposed to trying to put him out there, he hurts himself and then he’s out four to six weeks and he’s done for the rest of the year,” Vermes said. ... Sporting return home knowing they will host the Eastern Conference champi- onship with a win. "There’s a second game still. It’s not over at all. Yeah, we won this game, but Colorado’s a very good team. They’ve been this position before. They’ve played in playoff games. We’re going to be at home. Yes, we’ll have an advantage, but we have to stay mentally prepared," said Bunbury. The Rapids will be severely shorthanded coming into Wednesday's second leg. "I’m not sure that the team could have endured many more circumstances than they did. And I’ve got to say I’m proud of how they came out of the game," said Rapids head coach Gary Smith. "They threw absolutely everything they had at it physically . ... But there’s a little bit of life to it, and we’d certainly like to put them under a little bit of pressure and score nice and early down in Kansas." ... Striker Caleb Folan suffered a sprained left ankle and left knee in a tackle early in the game, and will be out 2-4 weeks. The situation is much more dire on the backline. Right back Kosuke Kimura suffered a fracture in his left foot and will miss 4-6 weeks. Center back Drew Moor suffered a separated shoulder in the second half and will be out 2-4 weeks. "It’s a bit of a strange one that we have as many injuries as we have and then three guys get carried off in a game," said Gary Smith. "I’m not going to say that they were over the top, but I did feel as though the referee could have contained some of the situations a little bit better." ... The Rapids will also of course be without veteran center back Tyrone Marshall after he was sent off just before the second SKC goal. ... The injuries also followed a wild card game when Jamie Smith suffered a torn ACL in his right knee that will put him out of the playoffs, and Pablo Mastroeni missed a second con- secutive postseason game with a concussion. "I think he’s going to be a doubt again for Wednesday," Gary Smith said of Mastroeni. "He’s certainly not making enough progress to be a body coming back into the group." ... In 2006, Colorado's last postseason appearance before last year, they lost 2-1 to Dallas at home before winning the second leg 3-2. "We have to produce two goals –- that’s our task," said midfielder Jeff Larentowicz. "I think that (Sunday) we allowed them to score and it was unlike us in the last couple of games to allow goals like that. The Houston Dynamo spoiled the first-ever MLS Cup Playoffs game forthe Philadelphia Union, coming away with a 2-1 first-leg victory at PPLPark. Even With Union employing a five-man backline that includedStefani Miglioranzi making a rare start as a deep central defender for thefirst half, the Dynamo took the lead after just six minutes. Set piecemaestro Brad Davis, the league’s assist leader, hit a long free kick fromthe right flank right to the head of Andre Hainault, whose flick putHouston up 1-0. A little more than a minute later, Union found theirequalizer. After receiving a beautiful chip pass from rookie MichaelFarfan, Philadelphia leading goal-scorer Sebastien Le Toux one-timed aleft-footed shot past Houston ’keeper Tally Hall. But the Dynamo retookthe lead in the 30th minute. Brian Ching’s nifty through ball found CalenCarr, who stayed onside, burst past the Union backline and slid a shotpast Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón for the eventual match-winner.

Sporting Kansas City earned a 2-0 road win on Sunday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. Sporting KC striker Teal Bunbury scored twice in a ten-minute span in the sec-ond half to give Sporting the 2-0 advantage in the two-game, ag-gregate goal Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Sporting Kansas City drew 1-1 in both matches against the Colo-rado Rapids during the 2011 MLS regular season. Both draws were comeback efforts, as Sporting Kansas City equalized in the second half after conceding first half goals. The first meet-ing came on May 28th at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, and the road result was the beginning of a club-record 14 game unbeaten streak. The second draw came July 6th at LIVESTRONG Sport-ing Park on a Graham Zusi strike.

Sporting KC is 24-19-14 all-time against the Colorado Rapids and 19-4-8 at home in the series, when including postseason. Sport-ing KC has not lost at home to the Rapids since the 2002 season, a span of 12 MLS matches when including postseason.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE | After previously winning the West-ern Conference in 1997, 2000 and 2004, Sporting Kansas City’s first place finish in the Eastern Conference this season earns the distinction of becoming the first team to finish atop the Eastern and Western Conferences in MLS regular season history.

As the top seed in the Eastern Conference, Sporting Kansas City will have home field advantage throughout the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Sporting Kansas City went 9-2-6 at home in MLS matches during the inaugural season at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in 2011, accumulating the most points at home (33) since the team’s historic 2000 season in which the club won both the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup.

In postseason play, Sporting Kansas City have lost only twice in regulation in 16 all-time home matches, with the most recent loss coming 3-0 at the hands of the Colorado Rapids on October 4, 1997 at Arrowhead Stadium. Sporting KC have outscored oppo-nents 29-13 at home in the postseason.

SAPONG FOR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR? | Sporting Kansas City striker C.J. Sapong led all MLS rookies in goals scored (5), assists (5) and games played (34) during the 2011 MLS regular season. He was the only Sporting Kansas City player to appear in every regular season MLS match this season and sets a new single-sea-son club mark for most games played.

The Manassas, Virginia native scored Sporting Kansas City’s first goal of the 2011 MLS season less than two minutes into his profes-sional debut. The 2011 MLS SuperDraft first round pick also scored the first-ever MLS goal at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

season with an MLS record 10-game road trip while awaiting the opening of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Despite going 1-6-3 over the stretch, Sporting Kansas City recorded a club-record and 2011 League-best 14-game unbeaten run from May to August and the team has lost only three times in their past 26 MLS matches.

In last place in the Eastern Conference as late as their 0-0 draw at Philadelphia on June 22nd, Sporting KC finished in first place in the East following a 1-0 win at D.C. in their regular season finale.

GOALS GALORE | Sporting’s 50 goals in 2011, the second most scored in a single season by the club in the last 14 years, tied for the second most in MLS this season behind the Seattle Sounders FC (56). Strikers Teal Bunbury, Omar Bravo and Kei Kamara each led the team with nine goals scored this season, while no other club in MLS had three players with eight or more goals this season.

Having allowed 40 goals during the regular season, Sporting Kan-sas City’s +10 goal differential was the best in the Eastern Confer-ence this year. Further, after scoring 36 goals in 2010, Sporting Kansas City’s +14 increase from last year’s offensive output is the third largest increase by any MLS team from last season.

NIELSEN IN NET | Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, named the team’s 2011 Most Valuable Player, recorded seven clean sheets and 12 wins in 2011, tied for the fourth most among MLS goalkeep-ers. He won Major League Soccer’s Save of the Week honor four times, second only to Kasey Keller’s six.

The Danish native posted a 1.14 goals against average in 2011, the third-best single-season mark in club history, which improves his career goals against average to 1.15, best among all goalkeep-ers in club history with at least 4,000 minutes played.

COLORADO RAPIDS vs. SPORTING KANSAS CITY The Colorado Rapids fell 2-0 to Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The team with the most total goals over the two matches will advance to the Conference Final, and if score is tied after both games, the series would be decided in either overtime or penalty kicks. If Colorado advances, they will play the winner of the series between Houston Dynamo and Philadelphia Union on Sunday for the Eastern Conference Championship. This is the fourth time the Rapids have faced Kansas City in the playoffs. The Rapids are 2-4-2 all-time in playoff matches against KC, and are 17-20-12 all-time in regular season matches. During the 2011 regular season, the Rapids tied 1-1 with Sporting twice, once at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and once at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. The last two times Colorado lost the opening game of a playoff series (2-1 on Oct. 21, 2006 and 4-2 on Sept. 25, 2002 to FC Dallas), they went on the road and won to advance. Moor, Kimura and Folan out Defenders Drew Moor and Kosuke Kimura and forward Caleb Folan were all injured during the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against Sporting KC on Sunday night. Moor suffered a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder and will be out for 2-4 weeks. Kimura has a broken left foot and will miss 4-6 weeks. Folan sprained his left ankle and his left knee and will be out for ap-proximately two weeks. Tyrone Marshall suspended For receiving a red card during Sunday night’s match against Sporting, defender Tyrone Marshall will serve an automatic one game suspension on Wednesday night. If the Rapids win by three or more goals (or in penalty kicks if tied at the end of regulation), Marshall will be available for Sunday’s Eastern Conference Championship. Regular Season Recap Colorado ended the regular season on a 2-1 victory at Vancouver Whitecaps FC, bringing their total record to 12-9-13 and a historic 49 points. The most points the team had earned previously was 48 in 1999. Mullan in the Playoffs This is Brian Mullan’s 11th consecutive playoffs. He has participated in the postseason every year he has been in the league. Mullan is second all time in MLS for consecutive MLS Cup Playoff appearances, behind only Dema Kovalenko with 12. 2011 Golden Boot With his goal against Vancouver in the final match of the regular sea-

son, Jeff Larentowicz earned the Rapids 2011 Golden Boot with a career high seven goals in the regular season. He was previously tied with Conor Casey and Caleb Folan as the team’s leading goal-scorer at six goals each. Shutouts Goalkeeper Matt Pickens recorded his fifth all-time postseason shutout against Columbus Crew in the 1-0 Wild Card match win (third with the Rapids). Has recorded 22 career regular season shutouts for the Rap-ids (most recently the 0-0 draw with Real Salt Lake on October 14), and is currently in second place for Colorado’s all-time shutouts record. He needs three more to catch the leader, Joe Cannon, who earned 25 shutouts for the Rapids from 2003 to 2006. Injury Update Pablo Mastroeni suffered concussion during the Oct. 14 home match against Real Salt Lake and is listed at questionable on the injury report. Jamie Smith had surgery on Tuesday morning for a torn ACL, suffered in the Wild Card match vs. Columbus Crew on October 17. He will miss approximately six months while recovering. Anthony Wallace has begun rehab for his right knee surgery that will cause him to miss roughly three months while recovering. Conor Casey continues to recover from his season-ending injury, a ruptured left achilles tendon, suffered on July 16 at Seattle Sounders. They’re joined by Kimura, Moor and Folan as out for the Wednesday match at Sport-ing KC. Ironman Moor Defender Drew Moor set an MLS record among field players on August 27 at Chicago Fire, playing the full 90 minutes in his 69th consecutive league match. However, by picking up his fifth yellow card of the sea-son in the match, Moor received a mandatory one match suspension and had to miss the Sept. 9 game at the LA Galaxy. Moor’s streak began on August 6, 2009 and consisted of 6,210 consecutive minutes of MLS regular-season action. 300 Club On August 20, Pablo Mastroeni started his 300th career match and became only the third MLS player to do so. He already leads the league for most all-time games started by an active MLS player. Tyrone Marshall holds second place on the list followed by Brian Mullan at#3 . Mastroeni played his 300th career game and his 200th Rapids game on June 18 against LA —only seven other players have played 300 MLS matches and at least 200 with one team. On May 7, Tyrone Mar-shall became the 13th player in MLS to play in 300 regular season matches. Season Streaks The Rapids set a team record going unbeaten in nine games (2-0-7)
