Muhammad Ali Timeline 1.Born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. 2.Debuted as amateur boxer in 1954. 3.In 1960 received Gold Medal at Summer Olympics in Rome 4.He made professional debut as boxer on Oct. 29, 1960. 5.Won World Heavyweight Championship in 1964 against Sonny Liston. 6.In 1964 changed named to Cassius X Clay then later to Muhammad Ali when he con- verted to Islam through Nation of Islam. 7.In 1966, Ali refused to serve in the U.S. military because he did not believe in the Vietnam War. He was charged with draft eva- sion. 8.Ali was stripped of boxing title because of his refusal to serve on the military. From 1967 to 1970, he could not fight profes- sionally. 9.On March 8, 1971, he vied with Joe Frazier in what became famously known as the “Fight of the Century”. 10.Supreme Court overturned his conviction of draft dodging in 1971. 11. On Oct. 30, 1974, Ali fought George Foreman in Zaire in what became known as “The Rumble in the Jungle”. 12.Ali retired in 1981. 13.Died of septic shock on June 3, 2016 at aged 74 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ali was known world- wide as “The Greatest”. Bounce TV's coverage will begin at 8:00 a.m. CT with the procession, which will take Ali on a final journey through his beloved hometown of Louisville, passing memorable landmarks in his life, including his childhood neighborhood and the Muhammad Ali Center. Bounce TV will also air the memorial service scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT, which will include eulogies by President Bill Clinton, Bryant Gumbel and Billy Crystal. Bounce TV will partner with its Louisville affiliate WAVE-TV, owned and operated by Raycom Media, for the special event, air- ing WAVE's local hometown coverage and insight nation- wide. Between the procession and the service, Bounce TV will present The Greatest, the 1977 motion picture in which Ali stars as himself. A dramatization of Ali's life, The Greatest begins with Cassius Clay winning gold at the 1960 Olympic Games and then follows his stunning victory over Sonny Liston, his conver- sion to Islam and name change, Ali's refusal of the military draft on religious grounds and subse- quent nearly four-year long court battle to fight again. Ali wins the legal victory and then returns to the ring and takes part in what many consider some of the greatest boxing matches of all time.
