This rapidly growing department specialises in sport and exercise sciencecourses and the interface of these with athletes and coaches as well as anexercising population. Benefiting from rising numbers of staff, along withexpanding facilities and state-of-the-art equipment, we have been able tooffer well-resourced and comprehensive degree courses. These courses reflectthe latest developments within the sport, health and leisure industries.

A centre of excellence for the regionThe Department of Sport, Health and Exercise Science has teamed up with thenewly established Hull York Medical School (HYMS) to develop a centre for sportingand scientific excellence. A state-of-the-art Health and Human PerformanceLaboratory has recently been built to provide support for sportsmen, sportswomen,their coaches and their fitness advisers, and for the study of the sport and exercisesciences in the broadest sense. The laboratory already offers a full range of sportscience support, including fitness and performance profiling, biomechanicalanalysis, lifestyle and psychological counselling, rehabilitation and other medicalsupport, and various coach education programmes.

Recognised qualityOur degrees are certified and approved by the country’s leading national bodies inthe discipline. The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, for example,endorses our degrees in Sport and Exercise Science and Sports Coaching andPerformance, while our Sports Rehabilitation programme is accredited by theBritish Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers.

Supporting local sportWe aim to provide sport science support to local performers, including thoseinvolved in the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, both at the elite level and forthose aspiring to elite performance. This support is delivered both at our sportscience laboratories and at local sporting clubs. The department has forged anumber of productive links with local professional sports clubs, including Hull CityFootball Club and Hull Kingston Rovers Rugby League Club. The department alsostrives to develop community links through coach education programmes offeredwithin local facilities. The links with sporting clubs and associations provide ourstudents with additional scope to develop practical skills and to gain experience ofworking as a sport scientist.

Our Exercise Physiology ResearchLaboratory boasts a wide range

of high-spec equipment, includingautomated spectrophotometers,

micro-plate readers, a haematologyanalyser, blood lactate and

glucose analysers and a bloodgas/electrolyte analyser.

The lab’s treadmill is capable ofspeeds up to 40 km/h with 30%

incline. Such equipment is anabsolute necessity when working with

elite athletes – as we frequently do.

BSc Sport and Exercise Science

‘They think it’s all over …’But for you, it could be the beginning of an exciting study programme leading to acareer in the expanding world of sport and exercise. At the University of Hull sportis advancing at a vigorous pace, and you could be part of this development. Withhigh-quality sports facilities, new and well-equipped sport science laboratories andstaff of the highest calibre, you will experience probably one of the best sportscience courses in the UK.

The BSc in Sport and Exercise Science is scientifically rigorous, in line with otherdegree courses around the country, and reflects our position within the Faculty ofScience.

In the first year you will undertake basic studies in the core areas of anatomy,physiology, biomechanics, psychology and research methods. In Years 2 and 3 youwill explore the applications of such disciplines in both sport science andhealth/exercise science. You will study the acute and chronic effects of exercise,sport and exercise nutrition, and ageing and obesity, as well as performanceanalysis and muscle dynamics.

Through your three years of study you will be given the opportunity to acquire anddevelop a range of knowledge and skills through modules such as ExercisePhysiology, Sports Biomechanics, and Sport, Health and Exercise Psychology. Youwill be part of a vibrant and supportive department, whose ethos is stronglydirected towards a holistic student experience combining both academic andpersonal achievements.

From Year 2 you will have the opportunity to select a number of modules that willenable you to tailor your course to suit your strengths and career aspirations (seepages 12–13).

BSc Sports RehabilitationSports rehabilitation is a concept relatively new to the UK and was introduced as adegree subject at Hull in 2004. The course provides graduates with the necessaryskills, knowledge and training to undertake specific training and rehabilitationprogrammes for injured athletes.

An applied, reflective and problem-solving approach to assessments and evidence-based musculoskeletal management is utilised throughout the course. Itincorporates subjects such as applied anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, manualtherapy, electrotherapy, remedial exercise therapy, exercise physiology, sportsnutrition and training techniques. Fieldwork placements constitute a significantcomponent of the course in Years 2 and 3, developing both interpersonal andclinical skills.

The training gives the graduate sports rehabilitator the necessary skills to provideprevention, accurate assessment and diagnosis of injuries, and the rehabilitationtechniques to get the athlete back to maximum performance in the shortest timepossible. The degree course is accredited with the British Association of SportsRehabilitators and Trainers. A current first-aid certificate is normally required.

BSc Sports Coaching and PerformanceThis new course will be of particular interest to those wishing to enter an appliedarea such as sports coaching or physical education, whether it be with children,adolescents or adults.

Following a first-year programme of modules that is shared with the BSc Sport andExercise Science course, there is specialised second- and third-year study forcoaching students. During these two years, you will address issues such as thepedagogical, psychological and sociological aspects of coaching behaviour, the roleof performance analysis in the coaching process, and the application of trainingtheory principles to sport.

In addition to the taught element of the course, you will have the opportunity toundertake a formal work experience module. You will also have the opportunity togain coaching qualifications and participate in voluntary coaching activities.

Major/minor HonoursIn each of the following courses, the ‘major’ subject(70%) is combined with another subject, the ‘minor’(30%). In (physical education and) sport science, youhave the opportunity to specialise in a particular routeduring your final year of study.

BSc Sport Science with GeographyAlong with the core sport science modules this coursegives you the opportunity to follow one of fourgeographical routes, chosen from two in humangeography and two in physical geography. Humangeography encompasses the economics and politics ofdevelopment, as well as urban and rural management;in physical geography you can study the physicalenvironment, ecosystems, geographical modelling andbiogeography.

BSc Physical Education and Sport Science withManagementThe first-year management programme introduces thekey areas of organisational behaviour and basicaccounting. In addition you can study modules in themanagement process and managing people. In thesecond and third years you can choose from modules onmarketing, human resource management, managementdevelopment, organisational analysis, operationsmanagement, ethics, accounting, systems analysis anddecision support systems. BSc Physical Education and Sport Science withPsychologyThis course gives you the opportunity to find out whythere is so much interest in sport psychology among elitesportsmen and sportswomen.

Other Honours

BSc Geography with Sport ScienceIn this course you will have the opportunity to study thevarious disciplines within sport science, sport andexercise physiology, sports biomechanics, sport andexercise psychology, and coaching studies. Each modulehas a distinct practical application and will provide youwith first-hand experience of the equipment found in acontemporary sport science laboratory.

BSc Psychology with Sport ScienceYou spend approximately 70% of your time studyingpsychology (including sport and exercise psychology)and 30% studying sport science. In sport science youhave the opportunity to select from both ‘pure’ and‘applied’ modules.

Our Single Honours courses have been designed to offer three distinctiveeducational routes. Students on major/minor courses also have theopportunity to specialise in one of these routes during their third year.

Sport and Exercise ScienceThe aim of the Single Honours course is to impart an advanced understanding of atleast two of the three core disciplines of sport science: these are biomechanics,exercise physiology, and sport and exercise psychology. Typically students whofollow this route have career aspirations within sport, exercise and health. You maywish to complete a higher degree in sport science or more specifically in the healthand exercise field.

Sports Coaching and PerformanceWe aim to impart in-depth understanding of the bio-physical, psycho-social andpedagogical principles that underpin coaching practice. As well as providing anexciting challenge for those keen to pursue a career in coaching, this course mayappeal to those wishing to follow a career in sports development or physicaleducation teaching or both. Sport, Health and Exercise PsychologyThe modules that make up this strand examine the contribution that psychologycan make to our understanding of sport/exercise participation and performance,and to our understanding of human cognition and behaviour in sport. They focuson the psychology in sport psychology and offer an in-depth understanding of theathlete and exerciser.

Anatomy and Human PhysiologyThese units aim to introduce the basic anatomy of joints and muscles, and includeconsideration of the physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems,kidney and fluid balance and the nervous system. Second- and third-year modulesexamine such topics as the biochemistry of exercise and the mechanisms thatcontrol energy metabolism.

Research MethodsThese modules aim, first, to develop an understanding of research design,methodology and analysis using qualitative and quantitative approaches. Theyinclude work in both experimental and descriptive methodologies and involve theapplication of statistical tests and forms of survey method with real data. Latermodules provide the skills to conduct empirical studies of individuals and groups.

Introduction to Coaching Pedagogyexplores the teaching and learning process in sport – an issue that is fundamentalto coaching success, whether in elite or recreational, adult or junior, settings – andexamines the complex nature of pedagogical practice in coaching. As well asanalysing different theoretical positions, you will apply this knowledge in apractical coaching setting and reflect on your own learning and development as acoach.

Analysis of Human MovementThe biomechanics thread running through Years 1, 2 and 3 introduces you to theanalysis of human movement in sport and health. The first module considers theapplication of functional anatomy to movement analysis. In Years 2 and 3 a fullerunderstanding of movement technique analysis is developed in various sports, andperformance factors are examined using film and force analysis. In Year 3, you alsohave the option of conducting biomechanical analysis of movement from a clinicalperspective.

Sports and Exercise Nutritionintroduces the six nutritional classes and their role in both resting and exercisestates, trains you to use computerised dietary analysis and gives you theopportunity to investigate dietary manipulation for sporting performance.

Health and Exercise-Related Fitnessintroduces you to the theory and principles of training as well as identifying specifictraining regimes to meet the specific components of fitness. You will investigate thestructuring of training to meet both short- and long-term goals.

Electrotherapyaims to give students a basic understanding of the rationale underlying the use andapplication of all forms of electrotherapy, including current knowledge with respectto the healing process at the cellular level.

DissertationThis provides the opportunity to investigate any aspect of sport and exercisescience. You are given guidance by a personal supervisor who has expertise withinthe relevant discipline, but you retain considerable autonomy over the work youproduce. Some students are able to publish their work in international journals.

Sports governing body coaching award coursesStudents can register for a variety of coaching award courses in their own time.These are likely to run in the evenings and at weekends and may entail paymentof a fee. In addition students will be able to access generic coaching courses inareas such as child protection and safeguarding, first aid and ‘equity in yourcoaching’.

The final-yeardissertation providesan opportunity toinvestigate anyaspect of sport andexercise science.

The great advantage of the sports facilities at Hull is that they are on the maincampus, within five minutes’ walk of the students’ union, all departments,and the Cranbrook Avenue and Taylor Court student residentialaccommodation.

The Sports and Leisure CentreThe attractively designed Sports and Leisure Centre has three floors whichincorporate a large sports hall, a gymnasium equipped with weights and multi-gym,a dance and aerobics studio, six squash courts, a solarium and a Physical Educationlecture room. Attached to the main Sports Centre is a new Health and FitnessCentre.

The Health and Fitness CentreThe new state-of-the-art Health and Fitness Centre, in which the University investedhalf a million pounds, is professionally supervised and incorporates a suite ofstrength and fitness training machines for individual muscle groups, acardiovascular room containing a range of aerobic training equipment (includingpowerjogs, ‘steppers’ and cycle ergometers), a sauna, a jacuzzi, a solarium, a bar,and snack and relaxation areas.

The sports groundsAdjacent to the Sports and Health and Fitness Centres are the University’s majorsports grounds, including a floodlit all-weather surface which conforms to FIH andEHA hockey specifications but which is also available for football and generalsports training, a new floodlit netball and tennis complex, six football pitches, threerugby pitches, two grass hockey pitches, an American football pitch, a lacrossepitch, four cricket circles, eight clay tennis courts and a grid training area. TheUniversity also has a boathouse on the nearby River Hull, used by the Rowing andCanoe Clubs.

Additional facilities in Hull and YorkshireWithin a short drive of the University are several swimming pools, a NationalLeague athletics stadium, an indoor tennis centre, an ice skating/hockey stadium,an indoor rock-climbing centre, and an outdoor centre for water-based adventureactivities such as sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Within an hour’s drive are theNorth York Moors and the Pennines, offering opportunities for orienteering,expedition training, climbing, and other land-based outdoor and adventurousactivities.

The Athletic UnionThe University’s Athletic Union administers �6 clubs catering for a wide range ofindividual and team sports; and outdoor and adventurous activities are supportedby an experienced full-time member of staff responsible for leadership and safety.

Studying for a degree at the University of Hull is a unique experience. We aimto provide you with an education that offers both depth and breadth ofknowledge. This scheme enables the majority of undergraduate studentsto take one module a year from outside their main course of study.

So, how does it work?Each year you take 120 credits’ worth of modules.

What sort of subjects can I take?You can take almost any free elective module from outside your main course ofstudy, usually at your home campus. You can even take a module from anotherfaculty. You should discuss your choice of free electives with your supervisor.
