DCmind Brushless with CANopenNEWS HIGHLIGHTS

With its range of DCmind Brushless motors, Crouzet Motors is also targeting

the access control market. Increasingly, applications in this field require reliable high-performance motors with a long service life.A specialist in motorization solutions with control electronics for demanding applications, Crouzet Motors is currently developing fully dedicated drive mechanisms adapted to the specific requirements of access control, such as rising bollards, for example. The installation of rising bollards must comply with various constraints and the drive mechanism for these bollards has to comply with various criteria:

- management of up and down travel with acceleration and deceleration ramps- using torque control to keep the bollard in the open or closed position- management of obstacles while the bollard rises- management of emergency situations- good mechanical performance of the geared motorTo meet these demanding criteria, Crouzet Motors has developed an application program specifically for the SMi21 electronic control unit and a strengthened drive mechanism. This is how we have been able to integrate all these functions in the geared motor. The DCmind Brushless motor and its SMi21 customized electronic unit have allowed our customers to design a more compact rising bollard that is quicker to produce, easy to set up, and exactly matches their specifications.

THE BLOG

DCmind motors for Access control

Crouzet Motors is launching the CANopen communication bus on its DCmind Brushless motors.

The CANopen communication bus allows a master system to control several motors (up to 127) using just one cable. This cable runs from one motor to the next and the master can address each of the motors separately to control a movement, make an adjustment or run diagnostics. The CANopen system is a very robust system, ideally suited to motion control (controlling the motor’s position, speed and torque, complex movements, etc).

Dedicated to demanding applications, these motors have M16 and M12 industrial connectors. The power supply has its own connector, thus allowing high powers to circulate without disturbing the control signals. Crouzet Motors has integrated the CANopen protocol, allowing the DCmind Brushless motor to be installed in the most complex machines. Functions have also been added to assist its integration and improve machine productivity and safety. The widest operating voltage range on the market (9 to 75 V, 100 V absolute rating). - Allows operation with motors from different manufacturers and with different power ratings.

- Allows outdoor operation, on a 12 V battery with solar panel or as backup.

- Safety option: the new SMi21 electronic control unit dedicated to CANopen has a “2 safety input” hardware option. These are inputs which, in the event of a failure, lock the motor power stage control and thus cut the power supply to the motor windings (the motor goes into freewheel mode). Their action does not go through the microcontroller and therefore ensures a high level of safety.

- Separate logical power supply option: this option prevents position information from being lost if the main power supply fails. It can be created for example by a simple 12 V battery which continuously recharges itself on the main power supply. In countries where power cuts are a regular event, this option is used to avoid having to repeat “homing” phases (learning the reference position) during manufacture.

3 QUESTIONS FOR...OLIVIER ROUSSEAU Crouzet Motors Logistics Manager.

Olivier Rousseau, you are the Logistics Manager at Crouzet Motors. Could you tell us about your career and what you are currently doing at Crouzet Motors?Olivier Rousseau: My career has always focused on operational aspects. I have worked in Quality Control, Production, Purchasing and Logistics. Each time, my mission was to turn around under-performing departments. At Crouzet Motors, I love the two-fold challenge my job represents: a managerial challenge – refocusing the team on the fundamentals of logistics – and a challenge to boost the company’s logistics performance, which had huge potential for improvement. The complex logistics involved must be optimised if we are to serve our customers better.

What drove Crouzet Motors to upgrade its logistics offer?O.R.: Several things. The first is an observation: the logistics information we were giving our customers was not sufficiently detailed. We needed to improve the way we formalise our offer in order to help the sales teams. The second is a desire to optimise our response to customers’ expectations: delivering products more quickly with the highest quality.

We have completely overhauled our logistics management in order to identify ways in which we could improve. We set targets for ourselves and put in place the necessary resources to achieve them. The “On Time Delivery” has improved by 3 points in the space of a year. With all the support services, we altered the manufacturing cycles, reviewed our storage policies, our minimum order quantities and our packaging in order to redefine a more precise offer our customers can rely on!What does your logistics offer consist of now?

O.R.: We have reduced the overall assembly time and have completely overhauled all our procurement deadlines. By combining both these criteria, we have redefined reliable contractual lead times. We have reduced the delivery lead time for 1400 products to between 40 and 60 days rather than the previous 80. We have reduced the delivery lead time for 2000 products by an average of 30 days. 99% of customer orders were confirmed with standard lead times and 95% were delivered on time last year. Our goal is to give our customers reliable lead times. Our minimum order quantities correspond to one complete layer of

products in our packaging. The idea is to be able to deliver firmly-packed products so they do not get damaged in transit, in accordance with our Premium strategy. For 2015, we will of course be consolidating the processes put in place in 2014 to maintain our excellent level of delivery performance. We will also work to reduce the lead times for our DCmind Brush motors and our Brushless motors.

To achieve this, we are collaborating with our suppliers to streamline procurement. In our business, foresight is an important element because it allows us to anticipate procurement and shorten lead times. With this in mind, we have launched a project to improve the reliability of our forecasts.
