One of the twentieth century's greatest atrocities was the Holocaustthe result of hideous European anti-Semitism. One of that century'sgreatest injustices was the Palestinians being deprived of their landtheresult of manipulative European colonial power, Michael Lerner likens it toJews jumping from the burning buildings of Europe and landing on thebac ks of Palestinians, wit h uni nt en de d results. This com bin ati on of eventshas led to a spiral of retaliatory violence in the Middle East, raising theurgent question: What will end this senseless spiral of mutual violence and death?

The essays in this volume address this question from a variety of viewpoints in hopes of provoking a wide-ranging and ongoing theologicaldiscussion of the Israeli-Palestinian situation among United Methodistsand other Christians. While the authors have struggled hard to present thesalient issues with clarity, fairness, and balance, their convictions and viewson the matter are unmistakable. Thus, given the highly politicized nature ofthe current discussion in the culture and the church, the mutual suspicion, the vested interests, and the emotional investment on both sides, theessays are sure to anger some and disappoint others. With this in mind, itis imp ort ant to point out that two fund amen tal assum ption s r eson ateth ro ug h all five essay s. Indeed, what isneeded is a new level of discourse that moves the discussion beyond itscurrent either-or stalemate.

In his essay, Nairn Ateek claims that Israelis want security andPalestinians want justice. Neither will happen without the other; and thedeath and violence will not end without both. In an effort to explore thedynamics of that claim and to allow a Palestinian Christian voice to be

The Israeli-Palestinian Situation: Theological ExplorationsThe Palestine-Israel Conflict:

    A Short HistoryE L A I N E C . H A G O P 1 A NT he Palestine-Isra el conflict is a political conflict. Al th ou gh th e conflicthas taken on a veneer of religious fanaticism by some Israeli and non-

Israeli Jews, as well as by Palestinian Islamists, in reality it is not about religion. This will become evident as the history unfolds.

In the nineteenth century, a number of Jewish leaders in Europeconcluded that anti-Semitism at the hands of European Christians waspermanent and incurable. Although there were two strands of Zionism thatemerged in Europe, i.e., cultural and political Zionism, it was politicalZionism that became dominant. Cultural Zionism sought to create a culturaland spiritual renewal center in Palestine that would allow Jews to secure theirtraditions. Political Zionism, after exploring sites such as Libya, Cyprus, andUganda, among others, fixed on and sought to transform Palestine into aJewish state. Chief political Zionist, Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) conceptualized the Jewish state in his book Judenstat, published in 1896. It was followedby the formation of the World Zionist Organization and the convening ofthe First Zionist Congress in 1897 in Basel, Switzerland, thus launching theZionist project.

The problem was that over 90 percent of the indigenous population ofPalestine was Palestinian Arabs. Clearly, transforming Palestine into aJewish state meant that Palestinians would have to be "transferred" out ofPalestine and Jews would have to be brought in. In fact, the concept of"transfer" was and still is a constant theme in Zionist political literature andt r a c t s . 1 Quoted below is one of many examples of the Zionist intent of

The Jewish campaign against the Br i t ish did not m ean th at Ben -Gurion considered his relationship with the Brit ish to be a "mili tary" one or that he soughtan all-out confrontation with them. Quite the contrary, as we are assured byTeveth [Ben-Gurion's biographer] , he saw the relat ionship as an exclusively"polit ical" one. In other words, all Ben-Gurion wanted from Britain at this stagewas to clear out the way so that he could pursue his "mili tary" relationshipwith the Palest inians and the Arab coun tr ies.
