We’ve all heard the true, albeit tired, statement that the only constant is

change. What goes unnoticed, or if recognized too often unspoken, is that renewal is constant as well. The natural world, as well as the human spirit, reminds us of this virtually every day. What can give us a point on the horizon to focus upon, a date on the wall calendar to circle, and hope and motivation overall is knowing that there will be a spring.

Many of the books in this catalog are celebrations of life, in thought, in deed, and very often, in the outdoors. I learned recently that “welcome” is defined as “one whose coming is in accord with another’s will.” Frankly, not only are the blooms and buds and warmer temps of spring welcome, so too are the joys of summer, fall and even winter.

To that end, we salute pretty much any and every activity that leads us to a greater appreciation of and respect for natural wonders, physical endeavors and a collective karma of goodwill. We aim to best support our staff and authors as we knit our efforts together to help readers get more out of life. Perhaps that sounds a little heady, but we sincerely believe that this is one of the most important ways in which we can contribute; we thrive on this sense of purpose and connection to others.

Enjoy these books – we made them for you.

Backpacking WyomingFrom Towering Granite Peaks to Steaming Geyser Basins

DougLAS LorAin

Wyoming boasts countless outstanding backcountry desti-nations: trout-filled mountain lakes so scenic they leave you breathless; geologic wonders of a number and variety literally unequalled anywhere else on the planet; spectacular canyons dizzyingly deep and amazingly colorful; and more abundant wildlife than anywhere else in the Lower 48. While some of these attractions are world famous—Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks and the Wind River Range—many others are virtually unknown even to the savviest locals.

This in-depth guide reveals all the best trips in and around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the Beartooth and Bighorn Mountains, the Absaroka and Snowy Ranges, the Wind River Range, and, for solitude lovers, such little-known treasures as the Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Bear Lodge, and Salt River Mountains. A detailed trail map and photographs accom-pany each trip.

Douglas Lorain is an author of several guidebooks to the Pacific Northwest and is the recipient of the prestigious National Outdoor Award. He has been described by the Seattle Times as the “next great Northwest trail guide author.”

The premier National Scenic Trail, the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail traverses the “high road” from Mexico to Canada through six distinct eco-zones and three states. Day & Section hikes Pacific Crest Trail: WAShingTonADrienne SChAefer

A succinct, portable guide to the best segments of the PCT in Washington State

From the mighty waters of the Columbia River to the majestic peaks of the North Cascades, the hikes collected in this book cover some of the best short segments on the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington State.

The 30 spectacular hikes profiled in this handy guide range from one to four days in duration—perfect for a day or a weekend hike. Some trips make use of lateral trails so that you can hike one way on the PCT then loop back to your starting point on a different trail. Other trips are easy enough to take the kids, some pass excellent swimming holes, others are good hikes with dogs, and several are fine summit hikes.

Each hike has its own custom map, plus elevation profiles, key GPS waypoints, trip highlights, clear directions to the trailhead, and plenty of insight about what to expect on the trail.

Living LandscapeThe extraordinary rise of the east Bay regional Park District and how It Preserved 100,000 Acres

LAurA McCreery

Living Landscape traces San Francisco Bay’s East Bay Regional Park District’s 75-year history, from its be-ginnings in the depths of the Great Depression when voters approved a tax hike, to its establishment as the largest and most innovative regional park agency in the U.S. The agency’s unwavering focus and sophis-ticated methods have allowed it to preserve 100,000 acres of public parklands in 65 parks throughout the East Bay.

The book explores the politically charged annexa-tion of new territory in 1964, board members whose controversial tactics nearly brought the agency to its knees, the clashes of “pure” open-space advocates with those favoring increased public access to parks, and many more pivotal moments. Set against the coming of age of the environmental movement, the book reveals how these extraordinary events unfold-ed, through the eyes and words of people behind the scenes. Living Landscape informs and surprises readers interested in the environment, California history, politics, law, or simply a good story.

one Best hike: grand Canyoneverything you Need to Know to Successfully hike from the rim to the river—and Back

eLizABeTh Wenk

One of America’s most iconic national parks, and one of the world’s most spectacular places, the Grand Canyon attracts over 4 million visitors a year who visit the canyon and peer over the edge of the abyss. A small number of these tourists leave their cars and trek from the rim to the banks of the Colorado River on one of the best-known hikes in the country. On the journey hikers take a “geologic journey through time” and pass layers of colored rock and surreal formations that make the canyon so picturesque. Some of these hikers are adequately prepared for the rigors of what can be a dangerous journey. Many are not, and for them the trip can be deadly.

Author and seasoned Southwest hiker Elizabeth Wenk provides the authoritative, step-by-step guide to planning and complet-ing this superb excursion with safety advice, insider informa-tion, detail, and reassurance found nowhere else.

Elizabeth Wenk has hiked extensively throughout the Southwest. Her previous books with Wilderness Press include One Best Hike: Mt. Whitney, and John Muir Trail.

Trinity Alps & Vicinity: Including Whiskeytown, russian Wilderness, and Castle Crags Areas

Fifth edition

A Hiking and Backpacking Guide

Mike WhiTe

The Trinity Alps mountain range in the northwest corner of California forms a rugged and little-explored divide, tucked between the Coast Ranges and the Cascades. The half-million acres of wilderness contain high waterfalls, glaciated granite peaks, sparkling lakes, and cool, deep forests. Nearby Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, Russian Wilderness, and Castle Crags Wilderness all offer miles of trails and recreation areas to explore.

The fifth edition of this classic hiking guide, in print for more than 25 years, has been completely revamped and now covers not only trails and cross-country routes in the Alps but in nearby recreation lands. It contains descriptions of 48 of the best day hikes and backpack trips, and has all-new maps and elevation profiles for each hike. Over 600 miles of trail and cross-country routes are covered in this most com-prehensive recreation guide to the area.

Author Mike White has written and contributed to 15 guidebooks for Wilderness Press, including Top Trails Lake Tahoe, Top Trails Se-quoia and Kings Canyon, Backpacking California, Sierra South, Sierra North, and Backpacking Nevada.

Views of the golden gateA Book of Postcards

hAroLD DAViS

A photographic tribute to San Francisco’s world-famous icon—the Golden Gate. In 30 oversized postcards, photographer and Bay Area-native Harold Davis has selected his favorite images from those in his spectacular book 100 Views of the Golden Gate, Wilderness Press (2008). The photos depict the natural wonders of the strait that connects the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean and the enduring marvel of the Golden Gate Bridge itself—taken from different vantage points, times of day and night, and seasons. It’s the Golden Gate as you’ve never seen it before!

Harold Davis is a photographer and author. His photographs have been widely published, exhibited, and collected. The author of more than twenty books, Harold has written (and illustrated with his photographs) Digi-tal Photography: Digital Field Guide (Wiley), The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite and the High Sierra (Countryman/W.W.Norton), 100 Views of the Golden Gate (Wilderness Press). He is the lead author of a new series of books about digital photography from O’Reilly Digital Media. He maintains an active blog at www.digitalfieldguide.com.

Crossing Antarctica

This thrilling account of the International Trans-Antarctica expedition chronicles the attempts of six adventurers in their ultimate quest.

WiLL STeger AnD Jon BoWerMASTer

In March 1990, Will Steger completed what no man had ever before attempted: the crossing of Antarctica—3700 miles —on foot. Lured by the challenge and the beauty of Earth’s last great wilderness, and determined to focus the world’s attention on the frozen continent now that its ecological future hangs in the balance, Steger and his International Trans-Antarctica Team had performed an extraordinary feat of endurance.

Will Steger has been an eyewitness to the on-going catastrophic consequences of global warming. A formidable voice calling for understanding and the preservation of the Arctic, and the Earth, Steger is best known for his legendary polar explorations.

For more than 20 years, writer and filmmaker Jon Bowermaster has explored the environment and exotic corners of the world for a variety of national and international publications, primarily for The National Geographic Society and the New York Times.

five-Star Trails in the AdirondacksA Guide to the Most Beautiful hikes

TiM STArMer

The Adirondack Park is an immense wilderness encompassing over 9,375 square miles. It is nearly as large as Vermont and larger than five other states. In fact, it is larger than the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Great Smoky Mountains, and Big Bend National Parks combined. Within its boundaries are rugged mountains, countless pristine lakes and ponds, seem-ingly endless forests, and thousands of miles of wild rivers, providing an infinite number of outdoor adventures.

With thousands of miles of hiking trails weaving throughout this precious wild resource, it is a hiker’s paradise. So whether you prefer easy strolls in the deep woods, panoramic views atop mountains, the calm of picturesque lakes, the drama of turbulent waterfalls, or the excitement of bone-crunching vertical ascents and descents, Five-Star Trails in the Adirondacks covers them all.

An estimated 3 to 4 million people visit the Appalachian Trail each year

Few areas of American wilderness are more impressive than the Appalachian Trail, with its extraordinary scenery stretching nearly 2,200 miles and covering 250,000 acres from Maine to Georgia. Maintenance of the trail depends in part on more than 6,000 volunteers who devote considerable time, energy, and personal resources to the task.

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to the conservation of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

Plugged is relevant on many fronts: teambuilding, leader-ship, personal challenge, and business adaptation. It’s perfect for companies dealing with change. The characters, their issues, and thoughts drew me into the story. The writ-ing was so clean it felt as smooth as an Augusta green. — John West,

Vice President Engineering, CSX Corporation

Chet McGill, the dedicated VP of sales at AlphaMax Manufacturing, is under fire. Trident, their biggest client, is being pursued, aggressively, by a new competitor. At the same time, Chet is feeling off-balance as he preps for a golf tourna-ment in which he’s partnered with Reggie Ward, Trident’s VP of Operations. Faced with big problems and with all eyes on him, Chet learns to get back to the what’s most important to his company, his clients and himself in Plugged.

Plugged teaches readers to ‘shoot for PAR’, a simple, proven method to achieve success in just 3 useful steps:

Prioritize. Focus on what matters most.

AdAPt. See change as an opportunity

Be resPonsible. Take ownership of the outcome.

The B2B executive Playbookhow Winning B2B Companies Achieve Sustainable, Predictable, and Profitable Growth

SeAn geehAn

In the B2B world, the company’s fate lies in the hands of a few customers. What ultimately determines if the company thrives, or even survives, is how these key relationships are targeted, structured, and managed.

This is the first book exclusively focused on successfully run-ning business-to-business companies and written specifically for CEOs and their senior management team, including CFO, CMO, CSO, CIO, Product Development, and presidents of business units. The B2B world is very different from B2C. Yet all too often, well-meaning executives apply B2C strategies to their B2B organizations, which leads to disappointing, even disastrous, results. The B2B landscape is littered with failed initiatives. More than 30 percent of all product development, marketing, and other discretionary dollars are wasted.

There are endless activities your company can engage in, all aimed at improving your business. But it’s imperative that you don’t get activities confused with results. Also, if the budget and plans aren’t structured for B2B specifically, they won’t move the meter.

Chasing oliver hazard PerryThe Lucky Commodore Who Saved America

CrAig heiMBuCh

Chasing Oliver Hazard Perry: The Lucky Commodore Who Saved America chronicles Craig Heimbuch’s journey through time and place in hopes of bringing history to life—a history that has haunted him since he was a boy, the story of Oliver Perry and the War of 1812. In the spirit of Tony Horwitz, Heimbuch travels to the battlefields, talks to historians, re-enactors, and fellow travelers to create a book that is funny, moving, and very informative.

The war of 1812 is America’s forgotten war. History books often give it minimal coverage, though, in fact, it was America’s second war of independence, the defining war of freedom from Europe.

Craig Heimbuch is an award-winning journalist and writer living in Cincinnati with his wife and two sons. He grew up on the shores and waters of Lake Erie, boating, traveling, and fishing with his father. He is currently the managing editor of Cincinnati Profile Magazine–a lifestyle publication in southwest Ohio.

Craig heimbuch was just a boy when he first stood at the base of the Perry Monument at Put-in-Bay and listened to his father tell that story. And yet that story, the legacy of that man and his moment, has stuck with heimbuch through his entire life. every time he visits his parents’ house in Cleveland and sneaks away to stare at the tea-dark waters of Lake erie, he pictures that battle and imagines what it must have been like to live in that moment, to be present at such a momentous time in history.

Some Like it ColdA Sheboygan Surfin’ Safari

WiLLiAM PoVLeTiCh

For twin brothers Larry and Lee Williams, surfing isn’t a hobby—it’s a lifestyle. Nearly every day during the past four decades, they’ve been catching the gnarliest waves despite living 2,000 miles away from any ocean. To overcome the obstacles of being born and raised in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the Wil-liams boys brought their dreams and longboards to the shores of Lake Michigan. Regardless that their hometown was hardly considered a surfing Mecca during the 1960s, the two combined their ingenuity to transform Sheboygan into one of the most recognized surfing destinations in the world. Ever since Larry and Lee rode their first Lake Michigan waves, surfing became their life’s ambition with the ultimate goal of riding on gale-induced waves towering as high as 20 feet.

Native Wisconsinite William Povletich is the author of Milwaukee Braves: Heroes and Heartbreak (Wisconsin Historical Society Press, 2009) and Green Bay Packers: Legends in Green and Gold (Arcadia Publishing, 2005) as well as numerous magazine articles on sports and entertainment. William currently resides in the Los Angeles area with his wife and two sons.

The Wire-to-Wire redsSweet Lou, Nasty Boys, and the Wild run to a World Championship

John erArDi AnD JoeL LuCkhAuPT

foreWorD By MArTy BrennAMAn

They were a one-year wonder, but what a year. The 1990 Cincin-nati Reds stunned the baseball world by winning the National League pennant and then sweeping the heavily favored Oakland A’s in the World Series. The Reds held first place from game one through the final game—becoming one of only three wire-to-wire champions in major league history.

Perhaps even more surprisingly, the story of this colorful team has never been told before in a book. In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of this historic achievement, The Wire-to-Wire Reds brings back the memories with original interviews, more than one hundred photos, and riveting storytelling by award-winning Cincinnati Enquirer columnist John Erardi and blog-master Joel Luckhaupt. With a foreword by Hall of Fame Reds announcer Marty Brennaman, The Wire-to-Wire Reds is the ultimate keepsake for fans throughout Reds Country.
