Section President’s MessageJeff Groncki - CPG-11118, Walgreen Co.

As we awaken from our winter hibernation, I’m happy to report on some of the key activities and initiatives that our Section has undertaken. While it’s been a few months since we’ve reported to our membership, I can assure you that we have been aggressively pursuing a number of initiatives to increase the value of AIPG to our membership.

In October 2014 we hosted a Tier 2 vapor intrusion training seminar where Marty Hamper (GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., Section Board Member) presented on the intricacies of the Tier 2 calculations for the vapor intrusion pathway. The evening included a number of great exhibitors, a great technical workshop, and thought provoking questions and dialogue. Greg Dunn from Illinois EPA was on hand for a Q&A portion at the end of the program and commended Marty on the quality and comprehensive coverage of his presentation. In addition, Craig McCammack (V3 Companies and Section Vice-President) and John Noyes (Cabeno Environmental) organized a soil gas field sampling training demonstration. The feedback we received from this meeting was spectacular. I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to Marty, Craig, John, Greg and our other board members that donated their time to making this event a success! In addition, I’d like to thank all of our meeting sponsors for their support of AIPG. We look forward to continuing to offer these types of events in the future.

Positioning off the success of the training workshop, our Section is utilizing revenue from the meeting and individual donations to retain a lobbyist to assist with changes to the Geology Act, which is set to sunset in January 2016. We have introduced bills into the Senate and House that extends the Act for another 10 years. The bill also includes language related to the Geologist Intern and administrative changes to the Act to bring it up to standard with the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Our lobbyist is helping us navigate the bureaucracy and obtain alignment between all parties that hold an interest in the Act.

This winter we also welcomed a new Section Board Member. Dave Heidlauf (Environ) has been approved as a Section Board Member. Dave has been a long-time supporter of AIPG locally and nationally. We are very excited to welcome Dave to the board.

Looking forward, the Spring Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Morton Arboretum. The technical presentation is titled: Geology of the Illinois Basin with an emphasis on the Shawnee Hills and will be presented by C. Pius Weibel (retired Illinois Geologic Survey).

Following the sequence from the past few years, this presentation will be a teaser for the summer field trip to Southern Illinois. As with previous field trips, we plan to offer the field trip free to AIPG student members. More details will follow at the Spring Meeting. We’ve also been very busy with recruiting new Student Sections and I hope to have some good news to report related to these efforts at our Spring Meeting. As we all know, many hands make light work. We are looking for young professionals that can serve on our Board and/or as liaisons between our AIPG section and student chapters. Please contact us if you’re interested in taking on a more active role in your section.

I look forward to seeing you on April 22!

NEWS & UPDATESWelcome Dave Heidlauf!Dave is a 20-year AIPG member and become more active with the section over the last five years, often representing our section at national conferences. Dave has worked in the environmental consulting industry since the late 80’s and is currently an environmental hydrogeologist for ENVIRON Internat ional Corporation. He received his bachelors in geology from Wheaton College and masters from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.  Dave’s work has entailed a wide variety of environmental bankruptcy, industrial redevelopment, and Superfund related projects across the US. The love of rocks also abounds into Dave’s family, his wife Lisa is also a geologist and an adjunct geology instructor at Wheaton College. Recently, Dave traveled to Nicaragua to work with a faith based group’s fledging efforts to learn how to install shallow water wells for local communities.  He had fun drilling through local volcanic tuff deposits, and visiting the Masaya Volcanic National park, home to one of the more active volcanoes in the country.

2015 “Fire and Ice” National Conference in Alaska!Have you considered attending the National Conference September 19 - 22 in Anchorage, Alaska? We are hoping to have our section represented, the location presents a unique opportunity to explore some of the most exciting geology in the US and connect with AIPG colleagues. Abstracts for presentations are due May 4th; http://www.aipg.org/abstract

Thank You for $1,700 in Lobbying Contributions! We would like to say a personal “thank you” for the leadership that several individuals and companies have taken to support our lobbying efforts to renew the Geologist Licensing Act in Illinois. This act protects the health and safety of the public and is important legislation for our profession as geologists. We need continued support for this lobbying so please consider making a contribution for this cause, more information on page 8.

June Field Trip to Shawnee National Forest

' Dave Heidlauf (Mem-09365 and Section Board Member) is leading the planning and organization for our June field trip. Plans are in the works to have Joseph Devera of the Illinois State Geological Survey lead the trip to the Shawnee National Forest to investigate some actual consolidated rock and associated landforms! We are tentatively planning to visit Garden of the Gods and Millstone Bluff, a National Register of Historic Places site where Paleozoic Era geology has preserved an ancient stone fort and petryglyphs. Be ready to collect some fossils and enjoy some of Illinois most exciting geology. To pre-register please contact Dave Heidlauf ([email protected]) or Ramona Cornea ([email protected]).

Student Member Reflection, Stratigraphy Class TripNydra Harvey-Costello - Student, Eastern Illinois University

This semester at Eastern Illinois University I participated in a four day field trip to Tishomingo, Mississippi as part of our stratigraphy class. The trip was organized by my advisor/professor Dr. Burns and a helping hand from Dr. Cornebise, the geology department chair. The trip was extremely fulfilling trip for me, especially because I will be attending field camp this summer. Dr. Burns did an amazing job introducing me to field methods, and I have developed a new confidence for identifying different rocks applying the techniques she taught. Dr. Burns developed our skills in drawing, labeling, scaling, and unfolding the story of differing rock formations, one being the Bangor limestone. I am now conscious of the questions I need to ask as I am investigating geology in new locations. I want to thank the EIU department in helping assure us students are well prepared and ready to apply our knowledge in the field, they are doing a wonderful job.

The Illinois-Indiana Section of AIPG is excited to announce that the Spring Section Meeting will be held on April 22, 2015, at the beautiful Morton Arboretum facility in Lisle, Illinois. The Morton Arboretum is a terrific venue to mingle with colleagues and vendors and enjoy a light dinner (included) and drinks from the cash bar. The meeting will feature important updates and a presentation by Dr. C. Pius Weibel, who will discuss the geology of the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois. We hope the presentation engages some interest for our upcoming field trip that we are planning to the area.

Featured Speaker

' Dr. C. Pius Weibel received his B.S. in Geology from the University of Wisconsin-

Platteville. After crossing the Cheddar Curtain in 1978 from the Driftless Area of southwestern

Wisconsin to Champaign-Urbana, he earned both a M.S. degree and a Ph.D. degree in Geology from the University of Illinois. Pius started working at the Illinois State Geological Survey in the

autumn of 1984 in the Coal Section. During his time at the ISGS, he has studied stratigraphy

and depositional environments of various ages of strata, and cave, sinkhole, and karst geology.

He has mapped bedrock, bedrock topography, surficial geology, glacial drift thickness, and soil

parent materials. He also has studied Tripoli deposits, advocated for and used both GIS and LIDAR in geological applications, and worked on deep burial CO2 Sequestration (and there are a few items that

have been left out).

For over 30 years, Pius has published nearly 200 publications of the results of his research and mapping. He is the

author/co-author of over 60 ISGS and other State Geological Survey reports, and of 35 maps, ranging in sizes that

include single quadrangle, multiple quadrangles, state-wide, and multiple states. In addition to publishing results in national journals and proceedings and reporting his findings at national and regional professional society meetings,

he has taken the time to contribute to field trips (author/co-author of 10), one of which was for the Illinois-Indiana

Section of the AIPG. Pius also has risked going to prison by becoming a politician in Illinois. He is a recently re-

elected member (after not running in 2012) of the Champaign County Board, having previously served from

2004-2012, including 6 years as the County Board Chair.

The AIPG Fall Section Meeting and Vendor Technology & Networking Night was held on October 15, 2014, at the Morton Arboretum in Lombard, Illinois. We had an outstanding technical presentation, good weather for our outdoor soil gas sampling demonstration, excellent networking between all of the geoscientists in attendance, and a wide variety of vendors and exhibitors who add a special dimension to our Fall Meeting.

And speaking of our vendors, we want to take this opportunity to acknowledge all of the exhibitors who were on hand to discuss their services and capabilities, by including their company logos above. We sincerely thank them for their donations and support of AIPG’s Illinois / Indiana Section, which go a long way to helping us fulfill our mission of promoting the profession and advocating for geologists and the geoscience community as a whole.

This year’s technical program, Illinois Vapor Intrusion Training Workshop – Part 2, was a follow-up to last fall’s successful and well-attended vapor intrusion training workshop. For an added dimension this year, Cabeno Environmental Field Services donated their personnel and field equipment to put on an outdoor demonstration of how to collect soil gas samples in the field. Our many thanks to John Noyes for an exceptional demonstration and discussion of sampling methods (also, a big shout-out to the Morton Arboretum management for allowing us to poke a couple of holes in their landscaping!).

The field demonstration was followed by Marty Hamper’s well-organized and practical training presentation on Tier 2 modelling, including a discussion of how to develop Tier 3 models. Greg Dunn, IEPA Manager who was present for our regulatory segment, remarked that Marty’s presentation was the best he had ever seen on the subject, including IEPA’s own internal seminars - - kudos to Marty!

And of course, we want to offer a great big thank you to Greg Dunn for once again taking the time to join us and field some tough questions from the group, during our “Ask the Regulator” segment of the program, which brought a close to the evening’s activities. Attendees received Continuing Education Credits, a complimentary 1-Year Membership to the AIPG Illinois-Indiana Section, and an extensive binder containing the Workshop notes and references.

! The year 2014 was the inaugural one for our student chapter, and we certainly started off with a bang! Our department hosts a colloquium series of topical interest to geoscientists, and we managed to entice AIPG’s Lynn Smith here in March to give us a talk about her experiences along her road to success. We co-hosted it with the folks who run the mentoring programs for under-represented groups in the sciences to give Lynn’s talk even more impact on our students’ lives – thanks, Lynn!!

Our group had a couple of service projects going during the year…the first was making paracord bracelets and crocheted scarves for our troops through Operation Gratitude. These fine folks create care packages for our deployed men/women and give them some cheer in their far-off assignments. Our students were very proud of having contributed to the comfort and well-being of our military people.

The second project on which we worked was very labor-intensive but

definitely rewarding in the end. We have a local public library that has a fairly strong after school Children’s Program, and the directors are always looking for fresh ideas to stir young ones’ minds. We decided to create a set of ‘dinosaur boards’ to donate to the library for the children’s use. Made from scratch, we took blank wooden boards, researched the habits and characteristics of six different animals, and created a series of questions that were posed with four different possible answers from which to choose. The person using the board chooses based on the graphic on the flap and opens it up to see if they are correct or not. I am sure that you have come across something of this sort in any museum trip that you may have taken. Printing, painting, outlining, stenciling, shellacking, affixing all the parts was tedious at times, but it was fantastic to see the outcome and the children love them!

The students have also been taking a lot of trips – south to Garden of the

Gods for a camping trip, east to IN to visit museums and mineral shows as well as go trilobite hunting, west to collect geodes and a fluorite/calcite hunting trip in southern IL. We have been actively recruiting and had 100% of all geology majors signed up to be AIPG members as of the end of 2014.

We have started our 2015 and look forward to many of these activities – gem/mineral shows, geode hunting, volunteering at the local animal shelter and Habitat for Humanity Restore, an Earth Day presentation at the local public library, end of semester picnic and more.

I am always on the lookout for any way to help my student members! If anyone knows of internships or job openings, would be willing to give a talk for our colloquium or chat informally at our bi-monthly meetings, please contact me!

The Illinois Chapter of the Illinois-Indiana Section of the AIPG was established in October 1999 to serve as an advocacy group for all professional geologists in the state, and specifically for Licensed Professional Geologists and their practice in the State of Illinois.

Professional Geologists in Illinois have made some strides since our licensing law was enacted in 1996. We have always relied on volunteer efforts to represent our profession in the legislative process.    This requires a lot of time and travel for volunteers and the Section does not have the resources to fund this effort.   The legislature has also made it nearly impossible for volunteer lobbying efforts to be effective due to paperwork requirements. Our section has recently hired a lobbyist to prevent the Illinois Geology Licensing act from sunsetting, we have received generous financial support from companies and individuals, but we remain well short of our funding goals.

It is requested that you make cash donations to AIPG, Illinois‐Indiana Section for the purposes of lobbying on behalf of Illinois Professional Geologists.   This call for financial support should be heard and heeded by all Illinois Professional Geologists and not just AIPG members.  The amount of support received will define how we can ensure the future for Professional Geologists in Illinois.
