LEARN TO SWIM AT THE Y.For many, the YMCA was where one learned how to swim as a child and for good reason. Since 1885, the Y has been a pioneer in swimming education. Literally millions of people have learned to swim through the YMCA's perfected program. In Y Swim Lessons participants learn and practice new swimming skills and feel a sense of achievement from mastering something new that they can enjoy the rest of their lives.

Below the age of 3, the Y requires participants to be accompanied by a responsible adult (over the age of 16) at all times, which also allows for a one-to-one ratio of learning and growth. This is for the safety of all children and cannot be changed.

Level 1: Shrimp Level Ages 6-8 months. Program instruction in this class is directed toward helping parents to work with their child to feel more comfortable in the water and to develop basic water safety and swim skills. One adult is required to be in the water with children at all times.

Level 2: Kipper Level Ages 9-12 months. Program instruction in this class is directed toward helping parents to work with their child to feel more comfortable in the water and to develop basic water safety and swim skills. One adult is required to be in the water with children at all times.

Level 3: Inia Level Ages 13-18 months. Program instruction in this class is directed toward helping parents to work with their child to feel more comfortable in the water and to develop basic water safety and swim skills. One adult is required to be in the water with children at all times.

Level 4: Perch Level Ages 19-36 months. Program instruction in this class is directed toward helping parents to work with their child to feel more comfortable in the water and to develop basic water safety and swim skills. One adult is required to be in the water with children at all times.

Generally, swimmers are without parents and learn the basics of stroke mechanics, personal growth, personal safety, rescue, and water sports and games. At this age, participants are still growing and learning how to manipulate their bodies in a new medium. It is not unusual for swimmers to repeat levels multiple times. Classes may be combined, based on enrollment.

Level 1: Pike with Parent Ages 2-5 years. This program is for children between 2-3 years of age who have actively participated in the parent/child swim lessons and are ready to begin the basic paddle stroke on the front, back, and sides. This program is also a beginner class for children 3-5 years of age who are still in need of parental participation. Parents are required to be in the water with children at all times.

Level 1: Pike The first level of lessons is for beginner swimmers. Swimmers should be able to listen to instructions and follow directions. Swimmers will learn the basic paddle stroke on the front, back and sides. They will also be taught kicking skills and putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Eel Swimmers will learn to jump in without assistance, float on their front and back for 20 seconds with or without an IFD. Swimmers will also learn to paddle on front, back and side for 25 yards with an IFD and 15 feet without.

Level 3: Ray In this class swimmers will learn to front and back float 30 seconds without an IFD; front alternating paddle with rhythmic breathing 25 yards with an IFD, and 20 feet without. Swimmers will also learn front symmetrical paddle with rhythmic breathing 25 yards with an IFD, and 20 feet without; do a side alternating paddle for 25 yards with an IFD and 20 feet without; back alternating paddle for 25 yards with an IFD and 20 feet without; and back symmetrical paddle for 25 yards with an IFD and 20 feet without.

Level 4: Starfish In this class swimmers will learn to do a standing dive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke 25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basic sidestroke 25 yards; and tread water 1 minute. Swimmers cannot "pass" starfish until they turned 6 years of age.

Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons Private and semi-private lessons are accommodating to the busy schedules of families. Both private and semi-private lessons can be purchased in packages of 5, 30 minutes lessons. We work with all abilities, concentrating on swimming basics for beginners and stroke development for more advanced swimmers. An information form must be completed at the Member Relations Desk in order to enroll. The Aquatics Director will contact those interested and schedule the lessons based on instructor availability.

This program follows the Y of the USA's guidelines to swim lessons. There is a focus on five main points: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports & games, and rescue. Classes may be combined, based on enrollment.

Level 1: Polliwog This is the beginning level for school age children and is appropriate for anyone new to the water or with little formal instruction. Children will learn the basic paddle stroke on their front, back and sides, kicking skills and will become comfortable putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Guppy In this class swimmers will learn to front and back float 1-minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive.

Level 3: Minnow In this class swimmers will learn to do a standing dive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke 25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basic sidestroke 25 yards; and tread water 1 minute.

Level 4: Fish In this class swimmers will learn to tread water for 3-minutes; swim 50 yards front crawl; swim 50 yards breaststroke with legal kick and arm pulls; swim 50 yards backstroke; swim 50 yards elementary backstroke with a glide; swim 50 yards sidestroke with a scissors kick; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Level 5: Flying Fish In this class swimmers will learn to do a flip turn; swim 100 yards front crawl with bilateral breathing; swim 100 yards breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim 100 yards elementary backstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternating sides; swim 100 yards lifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Level 6: Shark In this class swimmers will learn to take their own heart rate; learn about open water and backyard pool safety; swim 100 yards from crawl with flip turns; swim 100 yards breaststroke with pull-out; swim 50 yards inverted breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke with dolphin kick and pullout; swim 50 yards over arm side stroke; swim 25 yards butterfly with streamline; and swim 200 yards individual medley.

Level 7: Porpoise This level differs from other levels in that the format allows older children and teens the opportunity to develop a program that fits their interests after they complete the Shark Level. Participants will expand upon the five main points of YMCA swim lessons in create ways that they help develop while they learn leadership skills and the value of community services.

Porpoise Club - This class if for swimmers who have completed the Shark level and are looking to work on endurance and get a workout. Participants will focus on the four competitive strokes but will not compete in any type of competition. Participants may register for one or both classes.

Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons Private and semi-private lessons are accommodating to the busy schedules of families. Students are divided into groups based on age and ability. The swim lessons follow the YMCA Swim Lesson Program. Lessons will be taught based on the needs of participants and will use the Y Swim Lesson Program as a guide.

Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons Private and semi-private lessons are accommodating to the busy schedules of families. Both private and semi-private lessons can be purchased in packages of 5, 30 minutes lessons. We work with all abilities, concentrating on swimming basics for beginners and stroke development for more advanced swimmers. Fluid Running This is a new Water Fitness Class for participants aged 13-17 years old. Participants must be comfortable in the deep water to participate. The class is 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise with NO impact on the bottom of the pool. This is great for athletes who want to cross train or are injured and cannot put force on a body part.

All classes encourage participants to work out at their own intensity for their own workout, which may or may not be the same as the person next to you. You know your body best and are encouraged to work it to its highest potential. Classes are held in shallow water, deep water, or both.

Aqua Kickbox This high energy, high intensity class has choreographed routines set to music. This class offers a low impact workout in the shallow end of the family pool. Emphasis is on cardiovascular and respiratory health. What a great way to get your heart pumping and your body fit. This class is taught in the Family Pool.

Aqua Fit This fitness class is circuit workout in the pool. Participants will spend a few minutes at each station to receive a full body workout. The class will be held in both the shallow and deep ends of the pool; participants must be comfortable in the deep water to participate in this class. This class is taught in the Family Pool.

Aquatics Sage YMCA

Aquanatics Water Fitness This is a low impact, moderate intensity water fitness class. After initial stretching and cardio intervals in the shallow end of the pool, the class moves to the deep end for muscle toning, additional cardio, and stretching. This is a great whole body workout! Noodles and barbells are incorporated in the class. All fitness levels welcome. Participants must be comfortable in deep water to participate in this class. This class is taught in the Family Pool.

YMCA Arthritis Aquatic Program (YAAP) This program of gentle water exercise is designed for all ages with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and related conditions, as well as any individual who wants to exercise without joint and muscle strain. the soothing warmth and buoyancy of exercising in the warm water pool will help decrease stiffness in joints and improve range of motion. This class is taught in the Family Pool.

Fluid Running This is a no impact, cardiovascular workout. Participants will be "running" during the entire class. This is a great class for cross training, injured athletes, and anyone looking for a great workout. Participants must be comfortable in deep water to participate in this class. This class is taught in the Competition Pool.

H2O Flow Water Fitness This is a great class for anyone seeking a low impact opportunity to exercise in the middle of the day. This well-rounded class will concentrate on flexibility, range of motion, strength, and cardio. Participants remain in the shallow end of the pool during the entire workout. This class is taught in the Family Pool.

LIFEGUARDING, CPR, & FIRST AID

We are proud to offer American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid classes to the Sage YMCA and surround community. Other American Red Cross Health and Safety Classes are also available. Please contact the Sage YMCA Aquatics Director for scheduling and additional information.

Classes will be held each month in March, April, and May. Dates and times are still to be determined. Watch for fliers, the website, and Facebook for more details. Please contact the Aquatics Director at 815-526-1636 for further information.

CUB SCOUTS, BOY SCOUTS, BROWNIES & GIRL SCOUTS

CLASS AGE DAY(S) TIME FEESScout Programs 6+ Flexible Flexible $5/$10The Sage YMCA is ready and willing to accommodate local Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Girl Scout Troops with water badge testing.

Our team of lifeguards and swim instructors can assist WEBELOS in obtaining their Aquanaut Badge and/or Swimming Belt Loop.

Certified lifeguards are able to administer the Boy Scouts of America Swim Test for all Boy Scouts. We also have a merit badge counselor on staff to assist Boy Scouts in obtaining their swimming and lifeguarding merit badges.

Any Girl Scout Troops interested in a fun patch, are invited to enjoy the pool. Brownies earning their W.O.W. journey can also be assisted. For more information and to schedule a day and time, please contact the Sage YMCA Aquatics Director.

Additionally, the summer season will begin in May this year. Space is limited for stroke clinics. Please note that Summer Swim Team practice times will change once school is out for the summer. Tryouts for the summer team will be the week of April 27th. Please see below for group requirements. Swimmers are also encouraged to take swim lessons to work on technique. Questions can be directed to the Head Swim Team Coach Ed Richardson at 815-526-1656.

Age Group This group is comprised of competitive swimmers 5-12 years of age. Swimmers who can legally perform all four (4) strokes: Freestyle, Breast Stroke, Butterfly and Backstroke qualify for this group.

Intermediate Group Swimmers in the Intermediate Group are 8 to 12 years of age who are proficient in swimming all four (4) strokes: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly. These swimmers have the motivation to decrease times and work hard. This group is of a competitive nature. Swimmers must be able to consistently swim 10 X 100 free on 1:30. Swimmers enrolled in high school are not eligible for this group.

Senior Group The Senior Group consists of swimmers age 12 and over and all swimmers enrolled in high school. Any swimmer not enrolled in high school must be able to consistently swim 10 X 100 free on 1:20.

Dodgeball Super fun and super exercise! Join us on the 4th Friday of every month for Dodgeball Night! All are welcome! Kids get to play on a team, think strategy, work on coordination and have a great time doing it! Adults can have a great time engaging in friendly competition with other Y members. Pickleball Open Play Come see what all the hype is about. Pickleball is fun for all ages! Bring a partner, meet a new buddy or play as a single. Pickleball is a combination of table tennis, tennis, and badminton. Pickleball is fun! It is also a great work out, very social and a competitive and athletic game.

Racquetball Ladder League Racquetball is both great fun and a great workout! Join us every Tuesday evening for recreational racquetball. The racquetball court will be reserved for competitive play during this time. Teams and individuals will keep their own score and will record their own standings.

Youth Archery Learn the art of archery! This introductory program will teach you the proper body positioning, safety, arm turn and control, proper draw, increased distance and archery scoring.

Youth Tennis This introductory tennis program is designed to develop early tennis skills. Your child will learn the basics of serving, volleying the ball, proper stand and swings and the rules of the game, all while making friends who have the same interests! Your child will be grouped with kids of the same skill level.
