Pierce School Enrichment ProgramGENERAL INFORMATION AND POLICIES

Registration Registration for spring enrichment classes will begin on Tuesday March 6th 2018. Please make sure to read the last page of this brochure to familiarize yourself with the registration procedures if you have any questions. Incomplete registrations will not be processed. We encourage families to enroll quickly because our most popular classes often fill up in a matter of hours! PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR PERSONAL ACCOUNT INFORMATION IS UP TO DATE!!

Program Dates Spring classes begin on April 2nd and run for 8 weeks. There are no classes on school holidays, school vacation days, or snow days. Please note that classes DO meet during early release days at their normally scheduled time. Classes may be canceled due to inclement weather. Due to the scheduling of enrichment classes, we can’t offer more than one make-up class due to inclement weather or snow days. In the event of instructor absence, a substitute teacher will fill in for the class, or the instructor may opt to schedule a make up class at the end of the session. Please see the class schedule for a list of class meeting dates.

Course Cancellation We reserve the right to to cancel courses due to low or no enrollment. If we cancel a course you have already registered for, we will contact you and offer you a full refund for the canceled course, or make arrangements for your child to take another class of his or her choosing.

Arrival and Departure Please be informed that PSED does not accept responsibility for locating children who do not show up for enrichment class. Due to the large number of children participating in the classes, the PSED Enrichment Coordinator is unable to track children who do not arrive at their class. Children who attend PSED on the day of their enrichment class will be tracked by their PSED teachers. Please be aware that Enrichment teachers are not required to stay with children beyond the class end time to wait for late parents or pick up people. Please make sure to be on time if you choose to pick your child up from class.

Contact: All additional contact including reminders, class cancellations, and schedule changes will be announced via email. We will send all email messages to the “Parent 1” email that you provide on your registration form. Please be sure to add [email protected] to your “email safe list” to ensure that our emails arrive in your inbox. We encourage families to share additional information about their child’s needs so it can be shared with the enrichment instructor and enrichment coordinator.

Pierce School Enrichment ProgramGENERAL INFORMATION AND POLICIES

Discipline: In order to maintain a healthy, productive environment for students enrolled in classes, all children will be required to exhibit appropriate behavior. If an instructor believes that a child is disruptive to the program, he or she will be temporarily removed from the class and the enrichment coordinator will notify his or her parent. If the situation recurs, the child may be excluded from future classes. We ask for your cooperation by communicating these expectations to your child and by enrolling your child only in classes which are of interest to them.

Payment Options: We accept the following payment methods: Visa, MasterCard, personal checkIf you choose to pay online, your child’s class registration will be fully reserved as soon as you submit the online payment. If you prefer to pay by check please be aware that your child’s spot will not be secured until we receive your check payment. We encourage families to register early as classes have limited space and will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.

Volunteer Program: (Grades 6-8) Please note that there is no longer an option to sign up for the volunteer program during registration. However, if you have an older child who is interested in volunteering as a classroom helper for one of our younger children’s enrichment classes (K-3), please e-mail the enrichment coordinator. Once the registration period ends, we will contact you with further information about which classes are in need of a helper.

PLEASE NOTE:There are no refunds for classes once your child has been registered and we receive payment. Refunds will only be issued if the class is

cancelled.

MONDAY CLASSES “Martial Arts-All”

Monday (2:40-3:30)

This course helps kids develop self-confidence by teaching the discipline, self-respect, self-defense, and physical conditioning that are hallmarks of the martial arts. The karate class consists of learning the basics of karate which include punches, kicks, blocks. Games are used

to incorporate and practice skills learned. Stranger danger skills including basic self defense skills such as verbal boundary setting and

physical self defense against hand grabs, pushes, etc.

“Acting Studio” Mondays (2:40-3:30)

A class for those who want to learn about everything that goes into acting and the stage! We will engage in

theater games and skits, scene creations, improvisation, technique, voice projection, movement on stage, and

more. This experiential class is designed for both those with some theater experience as well as those who are

new to the art. All are welcome!

“Dessert Chefs” Mondays (2:40-3:30)

Do you like to cook and try different recipes? Then this class is for you. Get out your aprons, spoons and learn

recipes from scratch. Share ideas about what you like to cook and create a class cookbook.

“Top Chef” Mondays (3:40-4:30)

Do you want to learn how to follow a recipe and create different meals? Do you like to try different

foods? The get ready to whip up some different meals from breakfast, to dinner and even dessert! Make

your own apron, hat, and cookbook to bring home with you.

“Girls With Grit” Mondays (2:40-3:30)

Sometimes girls just want to have fun! Girls with GRIT (Grace, Resilience, Intelligence, and Togetherness) is a true empowerment

course that teaches girls how to access the unique powers that already exist within themselves. Throughout, they’ll also experience how

nourishing it feels to cheer on their peers while they find their own special abilities. Some example activities include: using flash creative

movement to introduce themselves (and to reinvigorate on long winter days), filling in a “Well Within Me” journal, crafting their own version of

Wonder Woman power bracelets, and playing mindfulness guided imagery games that stimulate the senses for an environment of creativity and problem-solving. There is absolutely something for

everyone and ALL are invited to this extra fun girls club!

“Jazz Dance” Mondays (3:40-4:30)

Jazz dance fuses various dance styles, from funk to the lyrical lines of blues and ballet. This course provides an

opportunity to condition the body in the areas of muscle and cardiovascular endurance, coordination, rhythm, and

balance. Our sessions will consist of isolated body movements, technique work, basic steps and combinations, and traveling movements across the floor. After basic jazz-

style warm up exercises, we will concentrate on choreography.

“Advanced Painting” Monday (3:40-4:30)

An advanced level painting class focused on technique and application. Students will use different paints to learn color

theory and mixing while sampling various traditional painting techniques. Students will work on a long term

painting project.

“Beginning Painting” Monday (2:40-3:30)

A beginner's level painting class focused on technique and application. Students will use different paints to learn color

theory and mixing while sampling various traditional painting techniques. The class will focus on learning paint application methods while creating compositions that suit

any drawing skill level.

“Fencing ” Tuesdays (2:40-3:40)

Join The International Fencing Club (IFC) to learn the sport of fencing! Fencing is becoming more and more popular with the young people of this country. The IFC offers one of the best fencing programs in New England. The IFC provides students the highest quality fencing instruction available. They provide a safe and positive learning environment that people of all ages

can enjoy. This class is for all levels of fencers, from the casual recreational fencer to the serious national and

international competitor. Cesar Morales and the coaching staff remain interested in the complete personal development of

each student. Individual attention is a feature of each and every class, allowing all students to progress quickly and confidently

toward their personal goals.

“Outdoor Explorers - Puddlestompers" Tuesdays (2:40-3:40)

Come explore nature after school! Discover worms and other exciting life in the soil. Search for signs of animals and their food

sources. Learn how plants grow and look for rainbows after April showers. Investigate birds building their new nests. We will use hands-on exploration activities, active movement and play

to investigate the natural world around us.

“Continuing Piano” Tuesday (2:40-3:30)

This class is for students who have already taken at least one session of Beginning Piano, or have some basic knowledge of the piano. Each student should already know the notes on the piano keyboard, and

be able to play at least three songs.

“Knitting Group” Tuesdays (2:40-3:30)

This class is for students who want to learn or continue knitting. Students will continue to work on their knitting skills by practicing

stitches, increasing, decreasing, casting on, and binding off. Each child will have the opportunity to work on a project while

learning new knitting skills. A large skein of yarn and a pair of needles will be provided.

“Beginning Piano” Tuesday (3:40-4:30)

What has 88 keys but opens no locks? The Piano of course! In this Beginning Piano class the students will be

introduced to the Piano. They will learn the names of all of the notes, and learn to play several songs. This is a super

class for the beginning student!

“2D-Design” Tuesday (2:40-3:30)

Explore basic design principles and concepts. This class will cover the basic elements of design, strategies, and techniques through various

studio-based projects. Students will identify common design solutions while building their design vocabulary. Projects will use traditional and

non/traditional media to introduce students to the concepts of graphic design and illustration

“Hula Hooping Tuesday (3:40-4:30)

Learn circus-style hula hooping tricks and performance tips! Students will build core strength and flexibility

through games and exercises surrounding hula hoops and hoop dance. The class will cover basic warm-ups and

techniques as well as specific on and off-body circus tricks that are sure to impress!

“Gymnastics” Wednesdays (3:45-4:30)

Learn the fundamentals of gymnastics with our East Coast staff gymnasts. Mats, balance beam, horse, rolls

and more!

“Street Hockey” Wednesday (2:40-3:30)

Come join F.A.S.T. Athletics for some street hockey fun. Fundamentals of hockey will be taught through training

stations the first portion of the course. One-timers, passing, shooting and dribbling will be some of the

training focus in the beginning. After the instructional period is over, each day will end with a good old fashion

street hockey game. At the beginning of class; we will remind the students of safety and good sportsmanship.

“Intermediate Piano” Wednesday (2:40-3:30)

This class is for more advanced students. In this class, the students will continue to learn lots of

new songs and proper piano technique. The Piano students in this class will continue learning

new songs that they can enjoy and play for others. The focus will be on good technique and

ear training.

“Chess Beginners” Wednesday (2:40-3:30)

In this class we will discover the potential of chess;how we can use it to develop problem-solving skills, how to be patient,

respect the game and participants, and how to improve our chess skills. This class is designed for children who have never learned

how to play chess as well as those who have just started learning. If your child has never taken chess before, we recommended this

class to help them continue to learn about the game.

“Piano Club” Wednesday (2:40-3:30)

This is a class for the older students. In this class each student will work at their own speed on selected pieces of music In addition, they will

then have a chance to share their pieces with the class. New students are welcome!

“Chess Intermediate” Wednesday (3:40-4:40)

In Advanced Chess we will delve into the concepts of methods of center control, learning classic and modern openings, the

strategies of gambits and sacrifices, as well as long range planning and decision making. Chess is a game which involves making

sound choices and judgments while also allowing for individual style. To be a good chess player requires the development of

focus, patience, and careful planning while also emphasizing the ability to handle challenges with respect, skill, and sportsmanship. Advanced Chess is designed for students who already play chess

with proficiency.

“Circuit Makers” Wednesday (2:40-4:10)

Let’s get creative with electricity! In this junior version of our Hands-On Electronics class,

students will gain experience with creating their own electronics, designing custom light-up

greeting cards, electric games, mazes, and even musical instruments. Each class day consists of a

circuitry lesson and a hands-on electronics project, using components like lights, buzzers,

switches, and sensors.

“Sewing” Wednesday (2:40-3:30)

Learn to make your own hand bag, pillow, and even clothes. If you have never sew before this class is for

you as we will learn the basic sets to start sewing and come up with projects as a group that we can work on.

“Scents and Suds” Wednesday (3:40-4:30)

Indulge yourself with homemade products for you and your home. You can use these crafts to pamper yourself or a friend.

You’ll learn to make products like bath salts, soap, and lip gloss, as well as candles.You’ll enjoy a craft or two per day, and finish the week with a recipe book so you can repeat these activities at

home

“Yoga” Thursdays (2:40-3:30)

Yoga is not just for adults! This class will explore foundational yoga poses, breathing exercises, visual imagery and relaxation techniques that will foster lessons in self-expression, body image, social skills,

positive thinking, and environmental awareness.Your child will also experience working with props, cooperative games, theme activities,

storytelling, and music.

“SuperStar Soccer” Thursdays(3:40-4:30)

At Super Soccer Stars, it is our goal to teach soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Our philosophy is to use soccer to nurture, to build self-confidence, and to develop teamwork in every class. Our specially designed curricula use

positive reinforcement and a low child-to-coach ratio to ensure that each child improves at his or her own rate while having

endless fun. In this class experienced coaches will use specially developed curricula to introduce skills-tactical elements and team

concepts in a challenging and fun environment.

“Parkour” Thursdays 2:40-4:00

Parkour, also known as freerunning or ‘l'art du déplacement’ originally started outside of Paris in the late 1980's and has since become one of the fastest growing sports in the world.  Parkour practitioners learn to navigate their environment and overcome

mental and physical challenges in a safe and progressive manner in order to be able to move through any environment.  Practitioners, known as traceurs, learn to look at their world through the unique lens of "parkour vision" to turn any environment into a playground for creative expression through movement and physical challenge.  Classes are designed to accommodate a wide range of fitness and

ability levels, and are all taught by ADAPT-certified instructors.

“Minecraft” Thursdays (3:45-4:45)

Grab a pickaxe and join your fellow Minecraftians for a class in design challenges. Empow Studios instructors teach the

fundamentals of electrical engineering using Redstone, a special kind of element that mimics electricity almost perfectly. As they

master their Redstone skills, we teach key concepts in programming, architecture, and pixel art, all while using teamwork and social skills. It’s the perfect blend of fun, learning, and creativity.

“Scratch” Thursdays 2:40-3:40

Scratch the surface of programming with Scratch! Developed by M.I.T, the Scratch platform is one of the most engaging ways to teach kids to code. Students learn the basics of computer programming by

arranging puzzle-like blocks into lines of code in a drag-&-drop graphical interface. Possible projects include video games, animations, simulators, and even role-playing games. After the class, projects are

shared with family and friends, and kids can continue to work on their projects from home. Internet access desired. Learn more about

How can you create your own story using pictures and words in old books and magazines? We will explore collage

FRIDAY CLASSES “The Green Dragons”

Fridays: (2:50-3:50)

The Green Dragons program combine martial arts and growing food to promote fitness, focus on food and literacy for youth.

By strengthening connections between food and fitness programs our goal is to develop self-sustaining skills for health and empowerment in young people. Children will learn about the basics of plant science through interactive lessons which

integrate martial arts movements and gardening. Children will have the opportunity to build flat bed gardens to grow

vegetables and will also create video journals to document their work. To learn more about this innovative program please

“Curious Creatures” Fridays (1:50-2:40)

Over the 8 week course, live animals will be visiting Pierce 

One of our Curious Creatures staff members will bring a variety of animals for the program.

We always bring a baby alligator and a big snake!We will bring approximately 10- 12 different species. Discussion will focus on how the animals presented effect our environment and how we as a population can preserve them for the future. Discussion will also cover each animal’s special characteristics that allow them to survive in our ever changing environment.

NOTE: NO snacks allowed in Curious Creatures

“Hip Hop” Friday’s (1:50-2:40)

Hip Hop is an upbeat exercise and dance class for everyone! We play pop music and keep children active by moving to fast music and choreographing simple routines that everyone can learn. No dance experience required. This class is a great first-time exposure to dance and counting beats. A fun time will be

had by all.

“DEILAB-Lego Innovation” (Fridays (1:50-2:50)

Deilab unlocks the power of innovation through LEGO based design, engineering projects and challenges. If you love legos

and want to learn through building then this class is for you as you will explore form, function and scale through hands-on project based learning and testing with LEGO. Some things

that we will be building are soap box racers, sky scrappers, and airplanes. Kids will build self-confidence and develop critical

Create, design, build: it’s engineering in action! Be an inventor and execute a water filter design that really works. Next, engineer a path (with math) to move a

marble down a run. Build your own balance toy, create a creature that will sink and float, and construct a craft

stick catapult.

“Archery” Fridays (1:50-2:50)

Archery should be safe and fun. This balance is critical to make the experience in our programs exciting for all who want to explore the way of the bow. Our ‘learn by playing’ philosophy enables us to integrate key concepts of the shot

process with unique challenges that engage students and give them a goal to work towards.

original comic book!

Registration Information

1. To Register for classes go to the website: http://register.asapconnected.com/default.aspx?org=3344or log onto the PSED website at www.psedbrookline.org (under enrichment registration)If you have previously registered for a class you just need to click on the login button and enter in your username and password

2. Choose the classes that you would like to register your child for

3. Once you pick a class click on the register now link

4. If you would like to register for more than one class then click continue shopping if not click on the link to create an account

5. Enter your child’s name (If you are registering for more than one child click on the add another registrant link) and then create a log in name and password

6. Fill out the required registration information such as you contact information, your child’s grade, etc.

7. Select a payment method (Either credit card or check)

8. Once your payment is processed you will receive a confirmation e-mail saying that your child is registered.
