Elective Procedures

● You must line up QUIETLY outside of your elective class at 11:25

● If you are late, you must have a note from your teacher as to why you are late

● Please go to the bathroom before electives begin

All students in 5th and 6th grades are required to take at least one class in each of the

Fine Arts areas. You will need to take a Spanish,

Drama, Music, and Art class at some point during this

time.

Foundations of Art: Mrs. TatumExplore the wide world of art as we look at a variety of ways artists create. From drawing with charcoal, to painting on canvas with acrylic paints, students will create projects intended to enhance their visual and creative thinking skills.

Creativity and willingness to “experiment” is a must for this class! This class is perfect for students who are interested in trying out lots of different ways to create art and experiment with many kinds of art materials.

Exploring Careers in Visual Arts: Mrs. Tatum

Designer- Jewelry Designer/ Metalsmith- Photographer

Have you ever wondered how you can use your passion for art in a career?

This class will focus on some of the careers that you could pursue if you love art. We will explore the different forms of art that would be used in the following careers:

- Fashion Designer- Illustrator- Art Teacher- Video Game Designer- Woodworking

Foundational Spanish- Sra. DiazIn this course, students will build reading, writing, speaking and listening competencies in Spanish. In this course, students will not only reinforce vocabulary, but will be exposed to fundamentals as grammar as well. Students will aim to speak at partial to full-sentence length and communicate on familiar topics using words they have practiced and internalized.

The Arts of Espanol- Sra. Diaz

The arts give us a window into the world, and in this class we will explore the culture of Spain and Latin America through the Fine Arts. We will learn about and recreate Latin American folk art. We’ll hear what musical instruments and influences the Spanish-speaking world has given us and learn the some traditional rhythms and melodies from those influences. We’ll retell Latin American folktales through drama and acting, and possibly learn basic dances like salsa and bachata. The main language of instruction in this class is English

Musical Theatre- Mrs. ColvinIn this elective, students will dive into the

world of Musical Theatre! ★ Students will focus on developing musical

theatre skills (singing, acting and movement) in a variety of musical theatre performing styles.

★ Students will learn to communicate a story through vocal and physical expressions, as well as how to develop character to bring a song to life.

★ Students will begin to build audition portfolios and develop auditioning techniques

★ The class will perform both as an ensemble and through in-class solo’s to help overcome stage fright and to build confidence.

Improv- Mrs. Colvin

In this course, students will dive into improvisation! Improv is a unique theatrical genre in which actors perform without a script. Students will study the rules of improvisation and how to use them in various improvised scenarios. Both long- and short-form improv will be explored through drama games and scene work. Major focuses include collaboration, ensemble-building, confidence, and creative problem-solving.

Music Around the World- Ms. Tompkins

Music Around the World- They say “Music is a language the whole world speaks.” From Sarasponda, to Ye Toop Doram every culture has its own style of music. In this class we will be learning about different songs and games from around the world. We will also learn how to play and or accompany each of the different songs on a variety of instruments from ukuleles to xylophones and more!

Band - Ms. TompkinsBand is a year long class that plays music to fit all levels. Instruments include flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, bassoons, trumpets, trombones, baritones, tubas and percussion. We play music of many different styles including movie soundtracks and comical pieces. We have 2 formal concerts a year and meet on “B Days”. “B Days” is for Band days!

Microsoft Office - Mrs. Southard

The Powerpoint portion of the course will focus on creating multimedia presentations that include text, graphics, videos, and a variety of animated & transitional elements.

Learn how to effectively use Microsoft Office programs to create interesting, graphically appealing documents and presentations. Using Word, you will learn how to create and format a document, including inserting and sizing images, wrapping text, and using shortcut keys. You will learn to apply fundamental spreadsheet functions (sum, average) and create graphs in the Excel portion of the course.

History of Sport - Mrs. SouthardIn this class, you will learn about a variety of sports and sporting events, including the Olympics, March Madness, Kentucky Derby, Super Bowl and others. You will also read a biography of an individual who impacted the athletic world. We will explore how sports have evolved and some of the current issues in athletics.

This is NOT a PE course – we

will NOT be playing sports!

Photography - Mrs. Tudor

Students will learn the basics of photography and how to improve their picture-taking skills. Essential topics include composition, lighting, special effects, macro (close-up), people and landscapes, and motion.

Students will have many opportunities to take their own photographs in order to practice and improve on the skills needed to capture great images!

*Bringing your own iPad or cell phone would be helpful, but it is not required.

Elective ProcessAll 6th grade students need to complete their fine arts classes: art, music, spanish and drama. You will be given a slip with your name and the options for A days and B days. If you need a specific course, please be sure to sign up for it. This form needs to be signed by your parent and returned to your homeroom teacher. Classes will be filled on a first come-first serve basis.

Fifth grade students will complete the on-line selection. Once the sixth grade students have been placed in electives, the fifth grade students will be placed. Every effort is made to give you at least one of your choices; however, sometimes this is not possible.

Selections are due by Wednesday Morning!
