Introduction

The Spring Fields Baby Blanket is the first in a series of seasonal blankets.

The flowers on this pattern have been heavily inspired by the amazing Sophie’s Universe

pattern by Dedri Uys at Look At What I Made. So I would like to give her a special design

credit for allowing me to use a modified version of her flower. She’s a wonderful designer and

has some amazing patterns coming out, so if you haven’t already, head along to check out her

blog!

Sabrina (the wonderful woman I created this blanket for) has two favourite seasons: Spring and

Autumn. She loves the freshness of the air paired with the clear blue skies. That is, if we are

lucky enough for it not to be pouring with rain!

So this blanket was designed to embody Sabrina’s positive and uplifting personality, the colours

I know she adores and the season she enjoys.

I designed this pattern for Caron Cakes because I love the gorgeous colourways they have

come up with. For this blanket I used 2 cakes of Strawberry Trifle (how great is that name?)

and managed to make the whole blanket with just a few meters to spare.

Now for the legal stuff: with this pattern you’re more than welcome to make items for sale. I

only ask that you credit me as the designer. This pattern cannot be reproduced or reposted in

any way, and cannot be translated without my consent.

If in any doubt, or you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]

I hope you enjoy making this blanket as much as I enjoyed designing it!

Materials

To make this blanket 80cm W x 90cm L (with a margin of error of 5cm) exactly as shown you

will need the following materials:

• 2x Cakes of Caron Cakes Yarn (Strawberry Trifle)

o You will be playing yarn chicken at the end with 2 cakes. So if you don’t have

nerves of steel you should either buy an extra 100g (128 meters/140 yards) of

aran yarn for the border, or an additional cake.

• 6mm Crochet Hook (US: J/10, UK and CA: 4)

• Yarn Needle

• Blocking Mat

• Blocking Pins

If you wish to use a different type of yarn than what I have used, the specifications are as

follows:

• Aran Yarn (worsted weight, 10 ply yarn, medium 4)

• 400 grams ( 14.2 oz)

• 700 meters (766 yards)

• Cotton or wool blend

As this pattern is for a baby blanket, I would recommend purchasing yarn that can be machine

washed and is designed for heavy use. The last thing new mums want to do is hand-wash

blankets!

Special Stitches and Techniques

Numbers in [square brackets] within the text refer to the image it corresponds to

Leaves

First leaf: SL ST in next ST. CH 4 [1]. Yarn over twice, insert hook into the same ST as SL ST.

Pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook). Yarn

over again and pull through 2 more loops (2 loops on hook [2]). Yarn over twice, insert hook

into the same ST as SL ST and the first TR. Pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull

through 2 loops (4 loops on hook). Yarn over again and pull through 2 more loops (3 loops on

hook [3]). Yarn over one more time and pull through all 3 loops on hook [4].

Anchor: Insert hook behind the FPTR from the row 2 rows below the current row [1-2]. Make

a SC [2-3] around the FPTR.

Second leaf: CH 4 [1]. Yarn over twice, insert hook into the same FPTR as the anchor SC [2]

(note: try to turn your work so you can insert your hook on the left side of the FPTR and above the

SC already made around this ST. This will make your leaves even [4]). Pull up a loop (4 loops on

hook). Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook). Yarn over again and pull through

2 more loops (2 loops on hook). Yarn over twice, insert hook into the same FPTR as anchor SC

and the first TR. Pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (4 loops

on hook). Yarn over again and pull through 2 more loops (3 loops on hook [3]). Yarn over one

more time and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Anchor: Skip the 7 STs after the first SL ST. Create a SL ST in the 8th ST [1-2].

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reverse Popcorn Stitch

Make 5 DCs in the same ST [1]. Remove your hook from the loop already on it, and insert your

hook from the back of the work into the first DC you made [2]. With the first DC ST still on

your hook, insert your hook back into the loop [3]. Tighten and pull loop through the first DC

ST [4[. CH 1 [5].

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Puff Stitch

Yarn over and insert hook into ST. Pull up a loop. *Yarn over and insert hook into the same ST.

Pull up a loop [1].* Repeat 3 more times (11 loops on hook [2]). Yarn over and pull through all

11 loops on hook [3]. CH 1 to close the stitch [4].

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shallow FPSC

This stitch is basically the same as a FPSC. The only difference is instead of inserting your hook

around the post, you insert your hook around the stitch. See more information here.

Instructions READ BEFORE STARTING:

• Grey row = front side of work

• White row = back side of work

• Numbers in [square brackets] within the text refer to the image it corresponds to

• The turning chain at the end of each row does not count as a stitch

• When working in BLO or FLO – this is the front or back loop as seen from whichever side you’re working on, NOT the FLO or BLO or the “right” side of the work

• Except when making leaves or flowers, there should be 7 HDCs between each of the FPTR stems. On each end there should be 4 HDCs. I would recommend counting at the end of each row.

• If you have a greater or smaller number of stitches, there are the following options:

o Undo (frog) your work until you find the mistake. This is recommended if you have more than 1 or 2 extra/fewer STs OR the stems have started to bend.

o If you have only added 1 or 2 extra stitches, HDC2TOG in the STs between the stems that contain the mistake (this will stop the stems from bending)

o If you are missing 1 or 2 extra stitches, 2 HDC in a ST between the stems until you have the right number of STs between each stem (this will stop the stems from bending)

• It may be helpful to use stitch markers to mark the stems that will contain flowers/leaves. These are stems 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
