Yesterday, I burst into tears. Mother had said, “You must not listen to

any more comedians on the radio.”

When I was a little girl, my family’s radio was black and bulky. When I

arrived home after school, I liked to listen to the comedians, pressing my ear

against the wooden speakers. I thought their jokes were extremely funny. Mother

had never objected to me listening to them until yesterday.

Last night, some of Father’s friends from the orchestra came to our

house to practise violin in the living room. Mr Tach, the oldest violinist, brought me

some bananas. I was thrilled. I bowed to Mr Tach and exclaimed to my mother,

“Hey, these are pretty good!” I had tried to imitate the comedians on the radio and

spoke impolitely in front of our guests. Mother was not amused.

After that, I could only listen in secret when Mother and Daddy were out.

When the comedians were good, I would laugh uncontrollably. Children love

humour. No matter how young they are, they always know when something is

really funny.
