5 City of Fort Lauderdale | Parks and Recreation Department

Wilson Quintero, Jr. Wilson Quintero, Jr. was hired in October 2008. He started as a Parking Meter Mechanic Trainee in Transportation and Mobility, then became a Code Compliance Officer with the Department of Sustainable Development before becoming a Bulk Trash Code Compliance Officer with Sanitation in Parks and Recreation.

When leaving work one day, Wilson smelled something burning and noticed smoke coming out of the disposable cigarette container. Wilson tried using his water bottle to extinguish the recently disposed cigarette butt, however, that didn’t stop the smoke from coming out even

more. He removed the smoking/fire compartment from the container and used a hose to douse the flames. His co-worker, Rosemary Collette, observed the whole scenario and nominated Wilson.

When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Wilson said, “Working alongside a great partner, Wanda Acquavella, is truly something that promotes positivity. Working with such a great group of people in Bulk Trash definitely makes it easy for me to come to work and perform my tasks efficiently in order to provide the best service to the City and community. Our job can be very difficult. My coworker family makes it all worthwhile.”

Wilson graduated high school early and went to Atlantic Technical Center to become an automotive technician under the Toyota T-TEN (Technical Education Network) program. He worked for several Toyota dealerships as a technician conducting numerous tasks that ranged from a simple oil change to complete engine rebuilds before coming to work for the City of Fort Lauderdale.

Congratulations to Wilson Quintero, Jr. who has been selected as the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation’s second Team Player of the Quarter!

Alexander HernandezAlexander Hernandez has worked for Bulk Trash for four years. Alexander received 10 awards in one month! Alexander received compliments from several neighbors that he was extremely polite, courteous, and professional while removing bulk trash from their properties.

Working in the elements has its moments! Alexander’s funniest memory at work was the day when he was operating the claw truck and an iguana hopped into the claw bucket. Alexander appreciates his coworkers and says the person who inspires him most is one of our own, Gene Shepard. Gene’s hard work ethic, desire to do a great job, and his “lead by example” mantra

encourages Alexander to be a great employee.

In his free time, Alexander has many talents including playing guitar. When it’s time to eat, what comes to Alexander’s mind is his all-time favorite eggs Benedict from the Flashback Diner in Davie.

Congratulations to Alexander Hernandez who has been selected as the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation’s third Team Player of the Quarter!

TEAM PLAYER OF THE QUARTERAbout the Team Player of the QuarterThe Labor Management Committee of the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department nominates several notable employees for the Team Player of the Quarter designation. The winner of the award is then selected by the Parks and Recreation Director and is prominently recognized throughout the department.
