STREET PHOTO TALKMARKUS ESSL

Page 8: SPT Editor's Picks March 2015

SPT: What is on your mind before releasing the shut-ter?ENRICO: This could be good Photography !

SPT: On the scene that you are interested, how long do you stay and how many shots do you normally take ?ENRICO: I’ve experienced that it mostly doesn’t make sense to wait for the motive. You rarely find it, but it finds you!

If you are surfing Street Photo Thailand group for a while, you would recognize Enrico Markus Essl’s pic-tures. They are clean, well composed with a great sense of geometry. And this issue, we have a great oppurtunity to have a talk with him.

SPT: Hi Enrico, Could you tell us about youself a little bit?ENRICO: Born in 1970 in Linz (Upper Austria), grown up in Salzburg now back living and working in Linz.I’ve been interested in photography since my child-hood when I bought a Russian Zenit reflex camera with my pocket money. That was the beginning of my passion for photog-raphy that has lasted until today. The urban jungle of cities, the people living there, the crucial moments and the endless trips throughthe streets and places are stirring my desire to cap-ture moments.

SPT: How long have you been doing Street Photog-raphy?ENRICO: Since about 4 years I have been photo-graphing more in the urban city lifethe streets and places are stirring my desire to capture moments.

SPT: How did you get into Street Photography?ENRICO: Some years ago I came a cross the group “In Public” whose members have defined the genre of street photography in a new way. Their work aroused my motivation to plunge into street pho-tography.

SPT: What is your definition of Street Photography?ENRICO: To my mind street photography is captur-ing glimpses of non - staged situations in urban en-vironment.

SPT: And what make a good Street Photography?ENRICO: If you look at a photo for more than 2 sec-onds, throw another look behind and you can en-joy it again and again, it is for me personally a good picture

SPT: How often do you go out doing Street Photog-raphy?ENRICO: When I’m away from home I always have the camera with me. But I’m also very aware about two times a week photographing.

Page 9: SPT Editor's Picks March 2015

SPT: Normally, how many shot do you end up with on each walk?ENRICO: Not more than 30 or 40 photos, I photo-graph very conscious. I think that I have when I photographed the same manner from the time the movies and elaboration were very expensive,

SPT: What is your editing process?ENRICO: Lightroom, exposure and contrast

SPT: Single vs Series, which one do you prefer? Why?ENRICO: both of them, so I always have multiple threads when I’m on the road

SPT: Tell us a little bit about your Series “inside out“ENRICO: I had the idea to catch all the situations and faces I discovered behind glass panes on my daily walks on the streets. Also shop window dummies are supposed to play a major role, particularly regarding to the selections

Page 10: SPT Editor's Picks March 2015

of the motives. It conveys the impression that they seem to communicate with passers-by, and with the world outside. There is a mixture of the static and artificial world displayed in shopping windows and the fast and busy street life. All pictures were taken in strong sunlight, through glass panes and with the help of a polarizing filter. It was my intention to do this work around noon-time of one could think it wouldn’t be the best time for taking photographs. For me, however, this time of the day offers hard light and sharp contrasts, which result in strong reflections of the glass.

SPT: And “Communication Breakdow” (Honestly, I really love this series)ENRICO: The pictures from this series is that objects seem to be in a process of communication. Another thing is that these objects tell stories and the spec-tator interprets his or her own stories based on the objects. Motives like shown in the pictures can con-stantly be found in the streets. Therefore this series is a never-ending story. I’m keen on continuing looking for objects which encourage people to

think of their own stories.

When wandering through the streets I constantly discover objects that seem to communicate with each other. These pictures speak for themselves which means that there’s no need of integrating people to outline a situation. Sometimes fragments of persons are visible to emphasize the expression of a situation.

SPT: Do you have any favorite Photographer? Who? And Why?ENRICO: Helmut Newton, because he is the master of staging SPT: Do you collect photobook? any recommend photobook?ENRICO: No, but i can recommend Jesse Marlows „ Don’t just tell them, show them

SPT: Why this one?ENRICO: You can find all stylisch devices of Street Photography in this book.

Page 11: SPT Editor's Picks March 2015

SPT: I saw you competed in Street fight! arranged by OBSEVRE. Have you gain anything from this kind of activity?ENRICO: It is nice to be in battle with good photog-raphers from time to time and to see what the other members think about your photography and style.

SPT: How do you get into the apf collective?ENRICO: I was asked if I wanted to be there and I said yes. SPT: What is the advantage of being a part of the collective?ENRICO: To work together with amazing photogra-phers and learn from each other !

SPT: Have you every been to Thailand?ENRICO: no, but i will go there in the next years

SPT: Why did you post you works to the group of Street Photo Thailand?ENRICO: I like the group, the Thai Street photogra-phy is very good and getting better and better.

SPT: What do you think about Street Photography community in Thailand?ENRICO: Some street photographers from Thailand are now among the most aspiring in the world.

SPT: Comparing your early and current works, is there any significant difference?ENRICO: I work more in color and my focus goes to more pics without human. SPT: Where will you be in the next 3-5 years?ENRICO: I hope to be in a gallery in New York, no joke aside…I will have fun on photography in the next years too.

SPT: Any suggestion to those who are interested in Street Photography?ENRICO: Always the sam old sentence “go out and shot “

SPT: If you notice someone trying to take a photo of you, what will you react?ENRICO: no problem, take a pic of me, nobody will see it ….ha ha !!!
